There also have been many Cotton Bowls, but the 1937 game was the first. Moreover, it was the most memorable football game in the history of Marquette University. Played on Jan. 1 in Dallas before a slim crowd of approximately 15,000, the game featured two of the finest backs in college football. Marquette was led by All-American tailback Ray Buivid of Port Washington. He finished third in the '36 Heisman Trophy balloting. Buivid's counterpart for Texas Christian was Sammy Baugh, who placed fourth in the Heisman voting. In the end, it was Baugh who gained the upper hand, leading TCU to a 16-6 victory.
