He grew in a small Texas town, where his mother taught school and his dad ran a gas station and sold pipe and couplings. His father eventually launched his own pipe supply business, which his two brothers later joined. But the youngest McConaughey had little interest in following their footsteps. Instead, he headed to Australia for a year-long exchange program, after which he settled in at the University of Texas at Austin. There he bounced from major to major, pursuing each with vigor but little direction. "I was really anal about schoolwork," McConaughey told the Austin Chronicle. "I made that first couple of years way, way too hard. I was my own worst enemy." The result was burnout at the climax of his sophomore year. McConaughey turned from schoolbooks to Playboy and Sports Illustrated. He bided his time watching TV.
