Come tutte le leggende metropolitane (di gran moda presso gli anglosassoni, va detto) è possibile che essa abbia viaggiato "underground" per settimane, o addirittura per mesi, prima di uscire allo scoperto. Comunque, possiamo far risalire data e luogo in cui la notizia ebbe il crisma della, diciamo, ufficialità, nel 1969 a Detroit. Dai microfoni di una radio della città del Michigan, infatti, una sera, il d.j. Russell Gibb annunciò la morte di Paul McCartney. Secondo Gibb gli indizi a riprova di quanto affermava si trovavano nelle copertine e nei testi delle canzoni dal 1966 in poi. La notizia, ripresa dalla stampa e dai network nazionali, fece rapidamente il giro del Nord America, e da lì si diffuse in tutto il mondo. Stando ad una teoria di segno opposto, invece, la voce sarebbe stata creata ad arte dallo staff dei Beatles allo scopo di incrementare le vendite dei loro LP. Francamente non credo neppure a questa voce, per motivi facilmente immaginabili. Nel 1969 i Beatles erano giunti a un livello di notorietà tale che gli anchorman televisivi di mezzo mondo facevano a gara per averli nei loro programmi. Dunque credo che essi non avessero bisogno di tale forma di pubblicità (benché, lo riconosco, sarebbe stata molto efficace: una voce messa in circolazione a costo zero, con altissima presa sul pubblico e grandi vendite. Il massimo per un pubblicitario...).
