Back in the days when Lenny Bruce was his manager, Ted performed in such nightclubs as the Blue Angel in New York, the Purple Onion in San Francisco, and the Troubador in Los Angeles. Ted's first big TV break came when he landed a series regular role on High Chaparral after David Dortor saw him at the the Troubador. Since then he has appeared in a variety of shows, including guest starring roles in series ranging from Dallas, Hunter, Renegade, Murder She Wrote, and Baywatch. Ted co-starred in Another 48 Hours with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, and received praise as the bad ass biker, Malcolm Price. Ted's film career has also been eclectic. He has appeared in such films as One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (he was married on the set), Ulzana's Raid, and Play It Again Sam, including a critically praised performance as Strap the Be-Bop Killer in Wanda Nevada, opposite Peter Fonda and Brooke Shields. The son of an army colonel, Ted grew up all over the United States. He first studies dramatic arts at Los Angeles City College and with Richard Boone. He also did summer theatre in Santa Fe, New Mexico and has performed in some 30 plays. When not acting, Ted's hobbies include Navajo Indian culture, mountain climbing and writing songs and scripts.

Over the years that they worked together, they became almost a family unit, not only on the set, but during their spare time off the set as well. In the very first episode, Buck and Blue ride into Tucson and hire the bunkhouse guys, led by Sam Butler (Don Collier), who is the ranch foreman and who becomes John Cannon's left arm of the High Chaparral. The rest of the bunkhouse consisted of Sams brother Joe (Bob Hoy), Reno (Ted Markland), Ira Bean (Jerry Summers), and Pedro (Roberto Contreras). Vaquero (Rudolfo Acosta) is also acquired in the first episode as household help. There were cast changes, most notably in the fourth season with the disappearance of Blue Cannon (Mark Slade) and Don Sebastion Montoya (Frank Silvera) and the addition of Wind (Rudy Ramos) and Don Domingo Montoya (Gilbert Roland). Ira Bean disappeared at the end of the first season, and both Reno and Vaquero disappeared at the end of the second season. All the rest of the cast remained for all four seasons. This series was shot almost entirely on location in 100+ heat at Tucson, Arizona, which gave it a realistic atmosphere.
