Extractions: A sinister cabal of superior bloggers on music, books, film, popular culture, and technology - updated continuously. Home John Leonard on Norman Mailer at 80. Oddly enough, "windy knob" is the impression I got from the one attempt I was ever game enough to make on uncle Norman, namely a collection of assorted fact and fiction called The Essential Mailer . I got to about the middle of the third story before realising this was, in fact, some of the worst shit I'd ever read in my entire life. I cast the book aside with great anger and have not been able to convince myself to give it another go.

BW Online | April 29, 2002 | An E-Mailer Out To Squash Blackberry An Emailer Out to Squash Blackberry. This summer, Handspring's Treo will get amail-handling format that'll do any road warrior proud. stephen H. Wildstrom. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/02_17/b3780032.htm
Extractions: When the BlackBerry e-mail pager made its debut in 1999, I declared it "the first wireless device I'd want to carry around." Three years and many evaluations later, it's still the only wireless data device that has a permanent home in my briefcase. But that may be about to change. It looks like the BlackBerry, from Research in Motion ( RIMM ), finally has some worthy competition: the Handspring Treo ( HAND Designing a good wireless handheld involves four major aspects. There's the hardware, the device software, the wireless network, and, especially for the mobile executive, the system that allows access to corporate e-mail hidden behind network firewalls. When I first looked at the Treo 180, which costs $399 with wireless activation (

I doubt this will be "fixed" - actually, what's being reported as a "bug" is the fact that Evolution apparently implements PGP/MIME (RFC 3156). That is, Evolution does The Right Thing. In particular, PGP/MIME is designed in a way which assures that any MIME-compliant mail user agent can display signed messages without having to mess around with anything specific to PGP. That's more than you get with more traditional "clearsigning", which includes specific mangling of the signed material for transit. Of course, some users observe problems when trying to read PGP/MIME messages. However, that's mostly an indication that these users' mail user agents still don't get mail-related standards right which were first specified in the early till mid nineties, and which didn't change too gravely since then.
