Formed in the early 1960s, the company's fuller name at first alternated between George Liberace Music and George Liberace Songsmiths, before finally settling on the latter. When the upstart MSR Records bought out George Liberace Songsmiths in the middle 1960s, they continued to use the George Liberace name as their production-arm front, invoking it in their ads and brochures as an additional hook for unwitting customers, until their demise nearly 20 years later. As in the ad shown at left, the word "George" was usually set in much smaller type than "Liberace," to nudge potential customers towards the further delusion that their song would be performed by the swishy, popular piano player. The George Liberace/MSR empire therefore apparently manufactured many more acetate demos than they did vinyl records, although the respective press runs makes the acetates more difficult to locate. Until then, his most serious interest was baseball, a pursuit that earned him a scholarship to the university. During his second year, Professor Frank Wright showed him how to make drawing in the tradition of the Old Masters. "I got my first taste of what it might be like to have a career as an artist, and I was intrigued," Liberace remembers. "I continued taking courses from Frank and studied painting with William Woodward. By the time I graduated, I knew I wanted to be a professional artist." Before long, Liberace filled dozens of pages with extraordinary drawings and experimented with variations on the materials and techniques his teacher had introduced. That effort has continued since he completed his M.F.A degree at the university in 1993. Liberace now teaches anatomy sculpture, paining, and figure drawing at The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia. He also accepts commissions for portraits and exhibits his drawings and paintings with several commercial galleries. After years of trying different materials and carefully observing Old Master drawings, Liberace has identified a variety of materials and techniques that best record his observations of live models holding active poses. In addition to the materials he used in school, he now tones his paper with various water-based materials and has added wax-based colored pencils to his arsenal of drawing instruments.

Extractions: The Big House from ... Neon Wladziu "Walter" Valentino Liberace, officially "Liberace" since 1950, opened at The Riviera Hotel in 1955, as the highest paid entertainer in Las Vegas. For the next thirty years, he was the best casino draw in town. While I worked at the Las Vegas Hilton in the '70s and '80s, I saw Elvis overfill the showroom's capacity with crowds that included many fans who stayed for both shows in a night and stayed in the lobby overnight to attend the shows of the next day. They had little money in their budget for a room, food or gambling. Much of their savings were given to showroom captains as "tokes" for seats at the tables closest to the stage. They were 'wild' fans who came to town only to see "The King". Liberace's crowds, on the other hand, filled the room twice a night on a regular basis, but these were people who had come for an evening of dining, the show and gambling. Liberace's fans could well afford all of that.
