He has appeared in numerous sitcoms from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air to The Simpsons Leno had his TV debut on the Merv Griffin Show where he did a routine about Elvis movies. He had his first club gig at a Boston strip joint where the audience threw cigarettes at him and yelled because they wanted to see a stripper in stead of a comedian. Leno first appeared on The Tonight Show March 2nd 1977 as a guest. At that time, Johnny Carson hosted the show. In September 1987, Leno appeared as a guest-host for the first time. In the middle of the 80's, he became a regular guest host on many talk shows.

It certainly means a lot to the show to land an interview with a celebrity of Jay Leno's stature. And I must admit, it's pretty cool to have the host of The Tonight Show on my show. But for me, the real thrill came from having the chance to interact with such a hard-core automotive enthusiast. Jay isn't just some rich guy with a bunch of automotive museum pieces.He amazed me with the depth of his knowledge about every vehicle in his collection. And he was as comfortable talking about form as he was about function. He could move seamlessly from waxing philosophical about the beauty and elegance of a Gordon Buehrig body design, to standing at a work bench beside a Jaguar whose engine was completely torn down, grabbing up various components (and fragments) to illustrate the nasty things that can happen inside an engine when a valve hangs up. Since one of the hallmarks of our show is that most of the cars we feature get driven, I eventually asked Jay if he'd be willing to take one of his out for a spin. I got the distinct feeling that this was the part he had been waiting for too. His pick for this was a 1930 dual-cowl phaeton Duesenberg. Be still, my heart!

His collection of vintage automobiles and classic motorcycles is highly regarded as a showcase of exceptional examples of both early and modern modes of transportation. In this special episode of Hemmings My Classic Car, Dennis Gage had the chance to visit with the host of The Tonights Show as Jay showed us a couple of his vintage rides. With a collection that ranges from vintage Dusenbergs to classic Harley-Davidsons, Jay could have given us a look at many rare vehicles, but today he gave us a look at a truly unique automobile; a 1909 Stanley Steamer. As Jay took Dennis around the car, we couldnt help but admire the quality of craftsmanship that was demonstrated in these early twentieth-century vehicles. The wooden fenders, the wheels, and even the frame itself showed a tremendous quality of craftsmanship and their expertise in construction.
