    Extractions: The strength of good horror in my eyes has always rested with the director. Many people say that special effects are the key ingredients to a successful horror film, but I have to disagree. I've seen my share of exceptional fx in films where there was no direction. Some of the most effective horror is built on what we don't see. We will always be more afraid of the unknown, than what is set before us. The directors I will highlight in these pages are all "masters" of the horror. Of course with horror, we cannot overlook the use of gore. It is a great motivator of frighten and a staple of the genre. All of these directors have used it in various degree to propel the storyline. Do not frown upon it....but rather " embrace the gore". All of these directors, IMHO, have helped to shape horror as we know it today. And not to neglect the founding fathers of the past, I will be doing a page dedicated to "classic horror directors". This page will include James Whale, Terence Fisher, Tod Browning, Roger Corman, and many, many more. Peter Jackson was born in New Zealand on Halloween 1961. He was raised in Pukerua Bay, a little town west of Wellington by his parents Bill and Joan Jackson. Being the only child, Peter was forced to come up with games, ideas and things to keep himself occupied. On Christmas 1969, Peter's parents got an 8mm camera and his life was forever changed. It didn't take long for Peter to get his hands on the camera. A director is born!!! In 1973, along with several of his friends, Peter began to make movies. They dug holes in the garden and made a film on the Second World War. It was at this time that Peter began to develop his knack for special effects. His first effect was stimulating gunfire by punching holes in the celluliod. It was this early training that would later pay off for Peter when it came time to make his first feature film. Peter continiued making short films with his friends and after getting a job at The Evening Post, he was finally able to afford the purchase of a Bolex 16mm film camera. It was very easy to handle and the necessary equipment if he was really serious about making feature films. In 1983, Peter immediately started filming. That same year, he started on a 10 minute short film called "Roast Of The Day". But just as when he was young, Peter had a million ideas and before he knew it, his 10 minute short was quickly becoming a full length feature film.

Together with David Sproxton, he established Aardman Animations in 1972, after experimenting with animation in their school years. Early endeavors produced a The Amazing Adventure of Morph, a clay animation series for children that aired on BBC in the early 1980s. Conversation Pieces, a series of short films commissioned by Britian's Channel Four led to the development of Aardman's unique style, appealing to adults more than children. This eventually led to many commercial jobs for the studio, and the landmark Sledgehammer video for Peter Gabriel, in collaboration with Stephen Johnson and The Brothers Quay. As the studio grew, additional talents were added, such as Richard Goleszowski, Jeff Newitt, Steve Box and Nick Park, whose 1994 Creature Comforts and Wallace and Gromit films

    Extractions: When you look at the horror, you see many of the Masters trying to make films away from genre and you really can't blame them. Right now, Sam Raimi has "A Simple Plan" in the theater and Wes Craven is working on a film called "Fifty Violins" (can't remember the last time he did a horror film). Lucio has passed on (RIP Mastero) and although Romero, Carpenter, and Argento have stayed loyal to the genre, when was the last time they made a real serious hardcore horror film. On the other hand, you have the young guns in the genre such as Rodriquez and Williamson (Yuck!!!) doing that teeny bopper bullshit. Sure there are a few independents that have shown flashes of talent, but overall the genre has been stagnate with one exception, Peter Jackson. I can remember when I picked up a copy of Dead Alive back in 1993 and saying to myself, "finally someone who knows how to make a good horror film". He won my admiration right away, not only because he made a zombie movie, but because he made a very good zombie movies. His over-the-top use of dark humor, which is very Raimi-esqe, engulfed with a bloody coating of extreme gore, reminiscent of two other masters: George Romero and Lucio Fulci , produced an instant classic. The plot is simple and nicely executed, considering the budget they were under it's almost poetry.
