Extractions: eye - Greil Marcus has always tried to find the big picture in rock 'n' roll. His career as a writer on music and American culture dates back to the early days of Rolling Stone . He has columns in Interview and Artforum , teaches at Berkeley and has written several books, including Mystery Train Lipstick Traces Dead Elvis and Invisible Republic Marcus explores his subjects as if they were detective stories. In his view, every significant cultural event contains a series of clues that depending on how you approach them suggest different motives, different conditions, different voices. But no matter what happens, the story stays in the dark. As an elder statesman of rock discourse, Marcus' first lecture in Toronto is a big event for wannabe scholars. The subject is a 1996 biennale in Florence in which the city's spaces were given a makeover by fashion designers, creating a unique collision of art and history. He also speaks on a panel called "Folk and Popular Culture: The Case of Dylan," with Rob Bowman, Kathleen Pirrie Adams and Bart Testa. Though Marcus' Invisible Republic , published last year, is primarily concerned with Dylan and his year in Woodstock, N.Y., with the Band making what became known as "the basement tapes," he's no authority. "I don't feel I'm any kind of expert on Bob Dylan," says Marcus in a recent phone interview. "I'm a fan, I'm fascinated by his work. I'm not interested in his private life. And a lot goes right by me. If a new Bob Dylan album comes out and I don't like it, I don't devote two weeks to studying it so I will understand it. If I don't like it, I don't listen to it.
Extractions: CD EP, Island, UK, 2001 The closest Polly Harvey has ever come to cock rock, "This Is Love" is one of the weaker tracks on the nevertheless uniformly strong "Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea" LP. Which is to say that it's a taut, muscular song with plenty of oomph even as it bypasses the artist's usual subtle complexities. The second track on this double a-side, "You Said Something," is the stronger choice. Wistful and lilting, with brilliantly inscrutable lyrics, it offers three minutes of rootsy beauty. The only non-album track is a live rendition of the spare, urgent "A Place Called Home" that proves Harvey's impeccable studio rock translates beautifully, as usual, to the live arena. Her blazing San Francisco performance the week after Sept. 11, which favored old b-sides and new album tracks, underscored her latest LP's prophetic New York themes. If we have to have a national call for hope in the face of tragedy, I nominate "A Place Called Home" rather than that damn Enya track. Brian J. Dillard

Armchair DJ: Music Review: PJ Harvey: A Place Called Home pj harvey A Place Called Home CD EP, Island, UK, 2001. Wow. Somethingabout pj harvey LPs sure encourages my bombastic tendencies. http://www.armchair-dj.com/reviews/a/a_place_called_home.asp
Extractions: CD EP, Island, UK, 2001 Wow. Something about PJ Harvey LPs sure encourages my bombastic tendencies. A single's a single, though: a predictable a-side and a couple chances for surprise on the flip. "A Place Called Home" actually isn't that obvious a choice; "Big Exit" would have been a safer bet. With its driving acoustic guitars, eggbeater percussion, soaring b.v.'s and spat-out lyrics, however, the song sounds timeless enough to fit in on even American radio. Bonus track "My Own Private Revolution" comes from the same cloth, but its blaring rawk production seems at odds with such weighty lines as "I have found / Purity / Simplicity / In the face of children." The other new offering, "As Close As This," brings us back to the spookier, more elliptical Peej of a few years ago: minimal bass pulses, droning guitar and keyboard figures, obsessional lyrics and a melody that politely suggests rather than demands that you remember it. It was great to see Polly prove she could deliver a crowd-pleaser, but it's also nice when she slips us these secret little reminders of her other strengths. Brian J. Dillard

The Onion A.V. Club | Laika Interview with Margaret Fiedler of Laika about the band's ambitions, making music at home, and her role in the current incarnation of pj harvey. http://www.theavclub.com/avclub3701/bonusfeature1_3701.html
Extractions: By Joshua Klein Decades ago, pundits predicted that pop music would one day combine computers with live instrumentation in new and novel ways. While this has happened, to a certain extent, the new hybrids often make the mix invisible, which kind of misses the point. Not so Laika, one of the most interesting bands making music today. Formed by American Margaret Fiedler and Brit Guy Fixsen after Fiedler left Moonshake, the band incorporates elements of so many different forms of music that it's ultimately impossible to describe the results. (In fact, the term "post-rock" was coined specifically for Laika.) The Onion A.V. Club recently spoke to Fiedler about the band's ambitions, making music at home, and her role in the current incarnation of PJ Harvey. Laika The Onion: You've been fortunate that a lot of the people Laika records with have been able to join you live. Margaret Fiedler: That's the thing. This album [ Good Looking Blues ] in particular is much more like what we did live. It's something we've been meaning to do ever since we started, which was to play the songs live before going into the studio. I know it sounds like a very normal thing in terms of a rock band, but for a band that incorporates more electronic stuff, it tends to be that you make a very electronic album and then figure out how to do it live. Or you don't, and you just use a lot of sequencers and that kind of stuff. We've never done that. We've never really used sequencers. We do on the album, but not live, so it was a question of getting that energy back on the record. So this album was a very roundabout record, in that we made it at home, a little bit more programmed, but then we went out, played it live, and sort of re-recorded everything more like the way we do it live. Very time-consuming.

Extractions: PJ Harvey has been telling Radio 1 about her new album, and she says we can expect something a bit different to her previous ones. She spoke to us at the Big Day Out festival in Australia and New Zealand. Polly confirmed she'll be performing at Glastonbury this year, if it goes ahead, and she said she's about two thirds through the new album: "With every album I tend to react against the previous one in an effort to find new ground. With this record, it's pretty ugly really. Quite an ugly sounding batch of songs. Quite disturing, quite dark, quite bluesy." "At the moment it's feeling good. I just go by how my guts feel." Polly hopes the album will be out around the end of the year, and it'll be followed by a tour. She's also collaborating with Queens of the Stone Age for the 9th 'Desert Sessions' album along with former Marilyn Manson bass player Twiggy.

Extractions: Mercury Music Prize winner PJ Harvey has said Tuesday's events are "hard to take in" after being caught up in the terror attack on Washington DC before finding out she had won the prestigious prize. Harvey said her hotel in the city overlooked the Pentagon, which was hit by a hijacked passenger jet. The singer had played a concert in Washington DC on Monday night, and was due to move on to Chicago on Tuesday. PJ Harvey "This whole city is shocked," she told journalists at the London award ceremony over the telephone from Washington. "Myself and my band are all partly involved in all that. We can see the Pentagon from our window." She said she had not expected to receive news of her award after being caught up in events in America.
