Extractions: Although there have been numerous screen versions of Bram Stoker's classic tale, none is more enduring than this original with a masterful performance by Bela Lugosi. Also on the same disc in the new musical score specially composed by world renowned composer, Philip Glass and performed by the Kronos Quartet. Filmed simultaneously with the English version, the Spanish version utilizes the same sets and identical script but with a different cast starring Carlos Villarias and Lupita Tovar. Belo Lugosi stars, in the role that made him a legend, as the bloodthirsty Count Dracula of Transylvania who terrorizes a group of Londoners who are unaware of the ways of the vampire.

Extractions: The highlight for me of the 1931 version of Dracula is the scene in which the cargo hatch of the doomed ship is opened to reveal Dwight Frye as Renfield below. His demented laugh and appearance while he clutches Dracula's coffin, is one of the most memorable of the film. This performance was no doubt the inspiration for Alice Cooper's song 'The Ballad of Dwight Frye'. Dwight Frye began his career on the broadway stage in the 1920's, gaining critical acclaim not only for his dramatic roles, but also as a star of musical comedies. Like many actors of this time he headed for Hollywood and what he assumed would be even more success. At other times his work ended up on the cutting room floor. A sub plot in 'Bride of Frankenstein' involving his charater Karl, was eliminated from the final script, leaving him only a few lines of dialogue and not much screen time. A musical scene in 'Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man' was to feature a song sung by Frye's villager character, this too was cut with the result that he is barely in the finished movie. Frye died in 1943 at the age of 44. He had suffered a minor heart, but did not seek medical attention because of his religious beliefs. In order to do his part for the war effort in the early 1940's, he took a night job as a tool designer for the Lockheed Aircraft Company. This allowed him to continue acting in films and theater productions.

Extractions: Boris Karloff stars as the screen's most memorable monster in what many consider to be the greatest horror film ever made. Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) dares to tamper with life and death by creating a human monster (Karloff) out of lifeless body parts. It's director James Whale's adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel blended with Karloff's compassionate portrayal of a creature groping for identity that makes Frankenstein a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time. In The Shadow Of Frankenstein In The Shadow of Frankenstein The dwight frye Story. This Halloween BorisKarloff. Bela Lugosi. Lon Chaney. dwight frye. dwight frye? http://www.amovieaday.com/in_the_shadow_of_frankenstein.htm
Extractions: In The Shadow of Frankenstein: The Dwight Frye Story This Halloween, many of us find ourselves wanting to return to a kinder, gentler "Boo!" -particularly to those creaky, cozy old Universal Studios classics of the 30s (now on DVD with tons of extras and restored footage). The horror films that scared baby boomers as - well, babies - are now the equivalent of cinematic comfort food, and they feature our favorite classic boogeymen: Boris Karloff. Bela Lugosi. Lon Chaney. Dwight Frye. Dwight Frye? Remember the fly-popping lunatic Renfield in 1931's 'Dracula'? Frye. The sadistic, half-wit lab assistant Fritz in 'Frankenstein'? Frye. The grave-robbing, one-eyebrowed ghoul Karl in 'Bride of Frankenstein'? Yup. Fryed again. Few actors felt typecasting's sting as badly as Dwight Frye. A gifted concert pianist from Kansas bitten by the acting bug, Frye wound up in New York, where he appeared in numerous acclaimed Broadway productions. Critics and audiences took note of his intense performances and versatility. Great things were expected of him when he moved to Hollywood. After a few small roles, Frye was cast as Renfield in 'Dracula', supporting Lugosi. It should have been the beginning of an auspicious and versatile career. Instead, it was the beginning of the end.
