He is the creator of a distinctive and celebrated body of work, including 1997's The Sweet Hereafter , for which he received numerous international awards, among them the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prix du Jury, two Canadian Genie Awards (for Best Director and Best Motion Picture), as well as two Academy Award nominations (for Best Director and his adaptation of Russell Banks' novel for the screen). In 1994, Egoyan's film Exotica won the Cannes International Critics Prize and the three major Genie Awards (for direction, screenplay and motion picture). Other award-winning feature film credits include Calendar The Adjuster Speaking Parts (1989), Family Viewing (1987) and Next of Kin (1984). Egoyan has also written and directed a variety of short films and programs for television. His Bach Suite #4: Sarabande is one of six short films based on the work of cellist Yo Yo Ma; he also created En Passant , a segment of the Canadian shorts sextet, Montreal Vu Par . He directed the highly praised television film Gross Misconduct , which won the Golden Gate Award at the 1993 San Francisco International Film Festival, as well as episodes of Friday the 13th Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone In 1998, Egoyan directed an acclaimed production of Gavin Bryar's Dr. Ox's Experiment for English National Opera, and in Canada, for Tapestry Music Theatre, directed the premiere of his own original opera Elsewhereless, composed by Rodney Sharman.
