A combat photographer during WWII (he landed on Normandy beach on D-Day), Meyer brought a surefire directness and ferocious sense of humor to his films, from the stark, savage FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! and MOTORPSYCHO, to the Day-Glo weirdness of BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and SUPERVIXENS. Some of the highlights from this period include Finders Keepers Lovers Weepers (1969), and Vixen Set in the Canadian bush, Vixen cast the incomparable Erika Gavin in the title role - the loving housewife of a commercial pilot, releasing her wealth of sexual energy on just about anyone who comes within twenty feet of her, including her brother (!), and a couple whom her husband has flown in for a fishing weekend. Extractions: Superchick Joyce Jillson, the woman who wrote a bunch of books on how to pick up men (yeah, I know, show up naked with beer is all you need to know, or in Joyce's case, just showing up naked would do the trick) is Superchick, a mild mannered brunette stewardess who can suddenly turn into Superchick, a hot blonde vixen in black hotpants who knows karate. She has a steady man in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles, but even that's not enough. In one scene, a passenger on her flight explains that he's a Marine who hasn't been laid in two years, and she feels that it is her patriotic duty to turn into Superchick and help the Marine join the mile high club in the loo. Then, there's this whole subplot about some guys who are going to hijack the plane that Superchick is on, sneaking the guns on board by having Superchick carry a package onboard given to her by her beach bum boyfriend in Miami. When the hijackers make their move, though, Superchick kicks their asses. Did I forget to mention that she kicks three bikers' asses, too? That was just some of the highlights. Joyce is very appealing. She gets nude occasionally. This is low budget garbage, but higher budget than a lot of other seventies sexploitation stuff. It's Seventies through and through. There's psychedelic music, drugs, and free sex. Uschi Digard is always a welcome sight and she certainly knows how to fill up a screen. Seeing John Carradine handcuffed and begging to be hit again is something you don't see everyday. If you like these low budget seventies sexploitation comedies, then you'll probably like it. Mark Lester co-wrote and directed TRUCK STOP WOMEN at the ripe old age of 27 just a year after chronicling nutcase daredevil Dusty Russell in the strange time capsule, STEEL ARENA, which isn't a documentary but a "drama" starring Dusty and his crew, which included the real Buddy Love! Quite a career that Mr. Lester was seeding and Truck Stop Women may not be Lester's finest hour, but as a testament to a young director with some tricks up his sleeve, you will do TRUCK STOP WOMEN, you will do. In early 70's America was in somewhat of a transition, Gerald Ford took over the White House after Tricky Dick had to go. He watched his popularity plummet overnight when he pardoned Nixon. The country was trying to wash Vietnam out of its hairy ass whilst conditional draft-dodging pardons were being offered. Stagflation should have been the catchword due to the oil embargo and da USA was heading into a big recession. On the rise were Women's Rights, hell, even a couple chicks tried to pop a cap in Gerry. Roe v. Wade was being debated, the economy stunk and politics and such were on the typical Joe's mind more than usual.
