They met as immigrants in New York in the early '20s. My mother's family came over from Ireland generations ago. That's where the silly name is from. But it's not made up! You couldn't think that one up." He smiles. "Mom says my father was torn between naming me Archibald and Reginald, and so I'm delighted he settled on naming me after my grandfather." At the age of two or three, Alexis moved with his mother in Seattle, Washington, spending summers with his father on the farm in Quantico, Maryland. He attended Seattle Country Day School, and began his acting career in Seattle, appearing in productions such as A Christmas Carol and Pinocchio at A Contemporary Theatre and other local theater groups. At the age of 13, he went to boarding school (St. Paul's School) in New Hampshire. By the time he left St. Paul's at age 16, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in acting. He attended Highline Community College taking theater courses while planning the next step in training for his career. During this time, he held a number of "grunt jobs" ranging from dishwasher (from which he was swiftly promoted to chef) to construction worker. After considering many schools in the states, he applied for a one-year scholarship (and was accepted for a three-year program instead) to the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

He traveled through Europe after finishing high school and finally settled in London to join the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and then the Royal Shakespeare Company. While acting in theatre in England he met Anthony Stewart Head in a production of Rope . A few years later he returned to the US with friends to nurse a broken heart, and wound up filming a pilot which never came to fruition. He was then involved in projects including the TV miniseries Noah's Ark First Knight , and an episode of Highlander . He finally landed the role of Wesley due to ASH suggesting him for the role. His character was originally intended to be killed after two episodes, but Alexis has since crossed over to become a regular in the spin-off series
