Davidson was born in California but raised in the white middle-class surroundings of Hertfordshire, England. After being discovered at a London wrap party for Derek Jarman's EDWARD II, this androgynous beauty made a big splash with a screen debut in Neil Jordan's THE CRYING GAME (1992). Though untrained in acting, Davidson is riveting and fascinating as Dil, a mysterious London singer and hairdresser who confounded many a spectator's expectations. After his 1993 Academy Award nomination for The Crying Game, the actor did only one other film, 1994s Stargate, before vanishing for the rest of the decade. Born in Riverside, California in 1968 (the son of a Ghanaian father and English mother), Jaye Davidson left for England at 21/2 years old. He grew up in Hertfordshire and began his short-lived acting career when, at the age of 25, he was plucked from Londons gay club scene for The Crying Game. He was working as a fashion designer at the time and took the role for the money. Jaye never took an agent and shunned the entertainment world, claiming he never wanted to be an actor in the first place. After considering numerous film roles, he finally decided his follow-up movie would be Roland Emmerichs 1994 sci-fi blockbuster Stargate. Costarring Kurt Russell and James Spader, the alien movie was set thousands of years ago, inside the Great Pyramids of Egypt. While the film certainly broadened Jayes audience, it obviously was enough to send him away from the film business for good. Publicly gay from the start, Jaye claims he simply doesnt like to work. Later in his career, however, he did say the work was beginning to grow on him. If he could take the work without the fame, he told The Face magazine, that would be brilliant.
