Extractions: By Greg Van Beek I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Karolyn for Bing Crosby's fan club magazine, BINGANG. I'm one of their contributing editors, and Karolyn was very kind in sharing her memories of working with Bing in Paramount's Blue Skies for the benefit of our readers. She liked the article I wrote and asked if I would put together something for her fan club, which I was more than willing to do. Greg Van Beek with Karolyn We "met" on the Bing Crosby web site, where she has been trying to locate a copy of the sheet music for "Getting Nowhere," the song she performed with Bing in the film. In one of her first e-mails to me, she said, "I may be somewhat biased, but I feel that the music written by Irving Berlin and performed by Bing Crosby is TIMELESS. I consider Bing Crosby one of my most famous fathers - we had a very special chemistry and I would consider it an honor to share my stories with his fans." I asked her how it was that she landed the part of Bing's daughter in one of his most lavish and expensive films. "Well, I actually think that I got cast for the part because they were really desperate to find someone that looked like him, I think they were having a real problem with that. They were getting to the point where they were going to have one of Bing's sons play the role - in a blond wig! Fortunately, I guess they thought I looked like him and I got the part. They tested a lot of others for it, so I was lucky."

Extractions: Best Screenplay: Butler and Cavett The Oscar ceremonies were broadcast live over radio on March 15, 1945, with Bob Hope as emcee. Paramount had to locate Bing on the golf course and virtually command him to attend the ceremonies, where he was handed his Oscar by his old friend Gary Cooper. Bing actually received two Oscars for his role in Going My Way . The second was a duplicate he requested for Gonzaga University. The original is still in the possession of Bing's second wife, Kathryn. Bing recorded Swinging on a Star for the Decca label and it topped the charts for 9 weeks in the summer of '44. Other hits from the movie include "Too ral loo ral loo ral," "Day After Forever" and the title tune. The Crosby soundtrack to "Going My Way" was released by MCA Records on compact disc #31367. Hardy's supper club "Holiday Inn" sets the scene for the love triangle that unfolds and allows for a few songs-and-dance routines at the same time. Music is definitely the key here, as the plot is distinctly thin, and the pairing of Crosby and Astaire, does not work as well as it could have. Crosby sings his way through "White Christmas" for the first time here, while Astaire tries to make do with a dancing partner - Marjorie Reynolds - who cannot replace Ginger Rogers. Extractions: BY ALAN VANNEMAN The King of Jazz is a time machine. This 1929 musical, filmed in Technicolor, preserves a part of America’s musical heritage that few people today know ever existed. The film has no plot, but consists of a series of extraordinary production numbers, with the music supplied by Paul Whiteman, "the King of Jazz," and his orchestra. Whiteman, unknown now to all but specialists, had a musical career that ran from before World War I into the early sixties. His band was one of the most successful in history – their first hit, "Whispering," sold two million copies in 1920, about one for every record player in the country. It was the first of more than 20 number-one hits that the band would record in the twenties. However, Whiteman made his greatest contribution to American music in 1924, when he commissioned and then premiered George Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue."
