He'd entranced the rock world with his tautly assembled first few releases, each produced by the shambling Nick Lowe. But for a new album he enlisted an engineer named Geoff Emerick, who'd worked on both "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Sgt. Pepper," to help him conjure up a twisted pop extravaganza. The record that resulted was called "Imperial Bedroom." In it, he outfitted his arch, peevish songs with every armament the studio could muster, from soaring synths, sharp as razors, to treated vocals, dark, discomfiting and vengeful. A famous song called "Man out of Time" is this deadly work's scariest musical concoction, a caustically inflamed track of shimmering pianos, cascading melody lines, overwhelming dynamics and unbridled vocals.

Elvis Costello wants to be taken seriously as a singer as opposed to a musician, but on his latest album, All This Useless Beauty (Warner Bros.), full of ballads and almost entirely devoid of balls-out rock, he misses his goal. Costello has let his admirable but ultimately unsuccessful association a while back with the Euro-classical Brodsky Quartet go to his head. Indeed, the Quartet has been invited back again, ostensibly to show off Elvis' high culture, which is rather a regrettable turn of events. Don't get me wrong, Costello still produces some great vocal noise; no one in rock spews venom better. Costello has always evidenced a marked predilection for the arsenic-and-old-lace approach, and in the main, the singer/songwriter/guitarist is at the top of his game when he's stark raving mad at the world. Equally significant to his success has been the sinewy elasticity of soundscape against which this Irishman with an attitude blows his top. Notwithstanding the occasional collaborations he's had with the likes of T-Bone Burnett, to these ears, the Attractions (keyboard wizard Steve Nieve; drummer Pete Thomas; and bassist Bruce Thomas [no relation]) have supplied the most sympathetic accompaniment. Here, the Attractions are present but only nominally accounted for most of the time.

When you look at a what he has done over the last two or three years, it boggles the mind. Here is a short list of Elvis's recent achievements: The list goes on but I can only take so much over-achievement on one page. The guy makes everybody look bad. So after all that, we have E.C.'s new record on Warner Brothers; All This Useless Beauty . His second record in a row with the Attractions. The first three songs form a thematic trio exploring different ballad styles about relationships. They all show Elvis's unique vocal style that he has developed over the years. Extractions: Elvis Costello. Love him or hate him. Is there an in between? Lately he's taken up shmoozing with Burt Bacharach and appearing in films like Spice World and The Spy Who Shagged Me . A far cry from the angry young punk who was once banned from appearing on Saturday Night Live for years because he chose to play "Radio, Radio" and not the song NBC felt was "safer" at the time. Yet Mr. Costello (a.k.a. Declan MacManus) remains an original rock icon, no matter what music he may be dabbling in. For my money's worth, Elvis's debut, My Aim Is True , is his best work. His famous backing band, The Attractions, are not featured here, with the backing music supplied by the band Clover (which at the time featured Huey Lewis and Sean Hopper of The News, although Lewis does not appear on this work). However, given the fact that the songs are so strong, the Attractions' work is not totally missed. Even in later years, Costello would choose to work with other musicians on classic albums like King Of America This album includes the somewhat-hits "Alison" and "Watching The Detectives", both great tunes. But the real meat lies within all the other tracks here. For a lyricist, Elvis was at the top, coming across at times like a snot-nosed Ray Davies with his observations of daily life and shady characters. Where else would you find a song like "Less Than Zero", in which the "Mr. Oswald" is not Lee Harvey, but an infamous Nazi informant, who, along with his wife, gave away secrets over the airwaves and had a fetish for young boys. It's rather disturbing once you realize what the song is about and actually give the lyrics a real listen. However, the peppy music and catchy refrains make it seem like something much lighter.
