After the weekend con in Sydney, Jason showed up in Melbourne for a hastily prepared one day con. Of course I went to that as well - can't pass up the opportunity of seeing such a lovely chap when he's in my home city. This is a synthesis of both BOBW4 and Jason's Melbourne appearance. Jason Brian Carter was born on the 23rd of September 1960. He grew up in Gainsborough, a small town in the north of England. His father (parents?) ran the local pub. He thought he would be an archaeologist when he was young - he used to go field walking and loved discovering old stuff like clay (smokers') pipes. Finding a 1930s newspaper under the lino was wonderful. There was no cinema or theatre in the town but Jason somehow managed to discover acting via school plays. He played the Artful Dodger in "Oliver" and had a wonderful time. He thought he was great at the time, but recently heard a tape of his performance and suggests that he over-rated his own performance somewhat ;-) He did his O levels and was best at the logical subjects - maths, physics, chemistry (!!!). At age 17, he did a school production of "Julius Caesar" in which he played Lucius. He couldn't stand studying Shakespeare, yet loved learning this work - after three weeks of rehearsals, he could do practically all the speeches for the entire play. During this time, he met his first love, Teresa. One scene required him to kiss the character played by Teresa. They didn't stop kissing when they were supposed to....and the director let them keep on going. After that, Jason ran around a party inviting everyone to the wedding.... :-)

For his seventh outing, The Colour of Silence , Carter opens with an invigorating one-two musical punch pulled from the Phil Keaggy instrumental catalog. Indeed, the lightning-quick fretboard excursions, alternate tuning, hammered harmonics and classically-informed melody line of "Alabama" are one in spirit with classic Keaggy instrumental works like 1991's Beyond Nature. The equally well-executed Carter/Keaggy duet "Smiles," by way of comparison, uses the more pop-friendly underpinning of the Keaggy/King/Dente Invention release as a starting point for its delicate and sublime two-guitar interplay. The middle portion of the album steers things in a more globally-informed direction. "Kinshasa," with its ethnic African percussion and children's chants, channels the undergirding soul of Paul Simon's Graceland project and attaches it to what is perhaps Silence's most pop-oriented entry. The similarly stirring "Celebracao de Vida" (Portuguese for "celebration of life") falls more in line with Simon's Rhythm of the Saints release, ornamenting its Brazilian cadences with an impressive flurry of tapped-out note runs. And Carter's able sitar work on "India" lends the song an Eastern flavor appropriate to its title.

Now, over the last couple years, the Jason Carter "online"- fandom on the net grew rapidly and eventually, several fans created fansites. But for somebody who had just gotten access to the internet, finding all those sites still meant hours of surfing the net as the information about links were spread all over the World Wide Web. So in 1999 I got involved in establishing the first version of the Jason Carter Webring. For those of you not being familiar with the term webring, here's some basics - in a webring, the member web sites related to a certain topic or subject are joined together to form their sites into a linked circle. This allows visitors to reach a group of sites dedicated to the same subject quickly and easily. Through navigation links (known as webring banners) which are usually located at the bottom of the Member pages, you can travel all or any of the sites in a Ring. It is possible to move through a Ring in either direction, go to the next or previous site, list all sites of the Ring or jump to any random site (depending on the possibilities given by the webring banner).

E-mail daniel@ majatal.pp.fi This short course in improvisation was originally intended with just Classical Musicians in mind, but it really is open to anybody who can play to a reasonable standard, has a certain confidence about what they are doing and a reasonable technical grasp, with a knowledge of all basic major and minor scales in most key signatures. Experience in improvisation is definitely not necessary. One of the objectives of the weekend is to have a small concert at the end of the session on the Sunday for people in the local area, so we have something practical to work towards. The material used will range from looking at pieces that most will know, to improvisation from the Indian Music perspective and how that works. It is a step by step approach, where people can walk at their own pace with no pressure whatsoever and an environment where everybody is the same, regardless of musical experience or level of technique. Every kind of instrument, including voice, is welcome.
