Extractions: Even though they were considered by many to be the best band in England, Bernard Butler left modern Brit-pop revolutionaries Suede at the height of their power in 1994 to pursue a solo career. A quiet man who preferred not to delve into rock 'n' roll excesses (unlike his bandmates), he parted ways with the group after their critically disappointing sophomore effort Dog Man Star . On his own, Butler shifted between session work - playing on albums by Aimee Mann and James' Tim Booth, a duo with David McAlmont in 1995, and a brief stint with the Verve in 1997, eventually settling into a recording career as a solo singer-songwriter on Creation Records. Released in the fall of '97, his first single "Stay" showcased a more subdued Butler. On his folk-tinged full-length debut, People Move On , he played nearly all the instruments himself.

Extractions: This is not the case of Bernard Butler and Suede. Originally Suede's first guitarist, Bernard began having problems with the other band members, and decided to leave. He was replaced by then-18 year old Richard Oakes. The switch in personnel has turned out to be a blessing for both artists; Suede came back with two storming LPs - 'Coming Up' and 'Head Music', whilst Bernard has returned with 'People Move On' via a brilliant one-off album with Dave McAlmont, and this year, 'Friends and Lovers'. This album is unashamedly retro, but unlike a lot of today's retro bands; Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene and others, it does not sound bland or repetitive and each song offers something different. The standout tracks are the singles 'Friends and Lovers', 'You must go on' and 'No easy way out' as well as 'Cocoon'. It is a shame that Bernard does not get the air-play he deserves, but perhaps his antiestablishment attitudes and cynicism towards all individuals which follow it's superficial style - Steps, Westlife, Robbie Williams, whom he has described as the 'usual suspects', has antagonised them so much that there could possibly be a backlash. It is their superficiality that keeps them in the public eye on a regular basis, where as BB does appear to shun the megastar status; keeping himself very private, with his family - his wife and son - being his most important concern.

Even before he released his first album as a member of Suede, the British press were heralding the group as "The Best Band In Britain." But, Brett Anderson sings with a London accent so thick it's barely decipherable to most Americans. Butler stayed with Suede not quite through two albums and then called it quits. After a few on-and-off years, he recorded an album with singer David McAlmont. The Sounds Of McAlmont And Butler is a fabulous album, but the small U.S. demand for gay, black, males who wear blue lipstick made its chances of success slim from the start. Like his previous collaboration with Suede, this endeavor also ended acrimoniously, leaving Butler once again on his own. But this time instead of looking for another vocalist, Butler decided to go it alone and recorded a stunning debut album, People Move On When Butler released "Stay," the first single from the album, the general reaction was, "Wow, he can sing, too!" Butler has often been hailed as one of the best guitarists of his generation, but most assumed the boy couldn't carry a tune. Truth is he has a beautiful voice almost angelic and the public soon realized "Stay" was a pop masterpiece. With a haunting melody, romantic strings, and a piano break that rings through your head, it's an epic tune that shows Butler doing everything he does best.

First off, to attend the show meant choosing not to go to see Tricky, Roni Size, Bob Mould or The Chemical Brothers, each of whom were playing their own gigs in Manhattan the same night. Add to that dilemma the minor detail of the tail end of Hurricane Floyd that forced most sensible New Yorkers to stay at home and minimize the risk of drowning or being hit by flying debris. My point being, if you were there, it was because you had made an informed, rational decision to be there, inclement weather and potentially more exciting entertainment notwithstanding. Yet, if we are to believe the notorious boys' club that is the English music press, the very idea of seeing Bernard Butler perform live is a rather uninviting proposition that would indeed seem to make it more sensible to opt for one of the other acts on offer, or better still, perhaps, to batten down the hatches and spend a thrilling evening with the latest Mogwai album. You see, prospective BB audiences are commonly led to expect an hour of Britain's most charisma-challenged paranoiac, hiding behind his hair, avoiding eye contact and interaction with the audience, and just mailing in his performance.

But this was an absolute revelation. Bernard's recently started to relent from his stout refusal to talk to the press or perform inane promotional chores, and has thus shed his grumpy, head-up-own-arse muso tag. But despite this, and despite the fact that I never believed all that stuff anyway, today it's still a surprise to see how at ease he is when it's just him and the fans, how much he values their support, and how anxious he is to put on a great show when he really doesn't have to. In such intimate surroundings, Bernard's a friendly, relaxed host. Two songs in, he strides forward to remove the rope separating him and the crowd, so we're now standing within touching distance, right up against the three-foot high stage. He also spins some jolly self-deprecating gags from some troubles with his guitar sound - that is, until he's so dissatisfied with the set-up that he throws his instrument to the floor and storms off, announcing that he will not come back until the problem is fixed. A slightly tense ten minutes later and he returns, apologising 'for all the fuck-ups' and promising to start again from the top. Having extended the set-list to full length, he cranks his amp up to 11, rolls up his sleeves, and unleashes his new sound.
