    Extractions: It must have been hard for Bernard Butler to leave the phenomenally successful Suede, a band that had become the hub around which the British pop scene turned. But by the release of Dog Man Star , the artistic differences between the guitarist and his bandmates were irreconcilable. Suede wanted to be glam pop stars; Butler wanted to be Neil Young. The autobiographical People Move On offers an intimate peek inside Butler's diary over the past few years. Here he takes free license to exorcise his demons and, literally, find his own voice. Heard for the first time on this record, Butler's singing voice is sweet, clear, and highly emotive, a perfect vehicle for these deeply personal songs about following his artistic vision (i.e. "You Just Know") and his relationship with his wife (specifically, "Woman I Know" and the single, "Not Alone"). Butler's musical influences are rooted in the time-worn classics. "A Change of Heart" is "Knockin' on Heavens' Door" rewritten as an inspirational love song while the acoustic guitar of "You Light the Fire" is sweetly reminiscent of Steve Howe's effortless guitar noodling on "Mood for Day." "Autograph," an eight-minute cerebral sojourn complete with unbridled guitar jam interlude, invites favorable comparison to Traffic's "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys."     Extractions: I got to the show expecting to see Emm Gryner, but I missed her... oh well, maybe next time. Some inane 99X guy got onstage to announce a free trip to London. Fortunately, he did not tarry. He said Butler would be up soon. Two beers later, Butler takes the stage with a "hello." Unassuming and charming best describes Butler's performance. The venue had the air of an English Pub. Butler seemed genuinely at home as he played through stripped down versions of songs from his People Move On CD. He himself is moving on, from his days with the English pop sensation Suede. At times, his performance brought images of a George Harrison caricature or a happy Nick Drake. The full house was enamored by this Brit. At one point, he apologized for the "bastards talking about their wash." The crowd appropriately shushed these bastards at the beginning of the next song. Commenting on the CNN goings on with Lewinsky and Clinton's peepee is how he introduced his song "Autograph." CNN was on the TV in the bar's corner. He said "You can watch me or you can watch the TV... It's the same difference." His humble demeanor was so refreshing. I had prepared myself for an English snot but instead encountered a nearly-shy articulate troubadour.

    Extractions: BERNARD BUTLER The Garage Tapes (Creation) BERNARD BUTLER People Move On (Creation) Exhibit A: "People Move On" (whether the title is observational or an instruction is never clarified), the first solo album from the former Suede, McAlmont & Butler and Verve (for a week, at least) guitarist, hailed by his boss Alan McGee as "a Neil Young for the 90s" (which does sorta make you wonder what Neil Young would make of hyperbole like that). Butler wrote, produced, sang and played all of "People Move On", save for the drums, strings, sax and some high-profile but mixed-to-oblivion backing vocals from Denise Johnson and Edwyn Collins. Very precocious, you may think, but remember that Butler was also one half of the creative partnership responsible for the original 90s new-prog classic album, Suede’s "Dog Man Star", as well as one of the decade’s greatest singles in McAlmont & Butler’s "Yes". This carn’t help but stack up to making "People Move On" a Very Important Album Indeed. Which it may be, but for me the reality is distinctly underwhelming, probably the opposite effect to that intended by its creator. Because, like "Be Here Now", "People Move On" is a massive album, twelve tracks sinking under a Titanic weight of overdubs and studio trickery, many of which seem to be making it their business to sound busy. It sounds like it really wants to be substantial and important...which isn’t quite the same thing as actually being substantial and important.
