Abstract: The plan "Did I just say 18 to 34?" asked Les Moonves at the UPN upfront last week, recalling that, in his role as president and CEO of CBS, he's the guy who's always telling advertisers it's those older viewers they ought to be paying attention to. Different strokes, perhaps, for Moonves, who was presiding at UPN's first upfront presentation since officially being acquired by Viacom's CBS.

Extractions: Theron "Chico" Benymon (Moesha) studio CBS Productions What I Say Been here many times before. Probable full season and should generate a similar audience/rating as the lead-in, "Girlfriends." I don't expect it to be discarded since it's CBS-owned on CBS2, oops, I mean UPN. Kudos to Telma Hopkins: According to the Internet Movie Database, this is her SEVENTH series (as a regular) in the last 28 years. What They Say Two half-sisters who only have their father in common suddenly find themselves neighbors in the same San Francisco apartment building. One's a free spirit, the other an overachiever. One was raised by a single parent, the other had two. Although they agree on next to nothing, the blood bond takes over. Luckily, there's a third-party friend to help smooth the waters when things get rough. Two half-sisters, Dee Dee (Essence Atkins) and Mona (Rachel True), have been raised in very different environments, but when they discover they are living in the same apartment building, they try to create a sisterly bond.

Extractions: CBS Productions What I Say "Flatliners" and "Ghost" meets "The Profiler." Viacom AND CBS Productions? Couldn't they just save on paperwork and combine? They are essentially the same company. Unless it loses more than 40% of the Buffy lead-in, it's going to be around for the whole year. UPN and CBS have too much interest here to cash out early, but there is a chance it could become this year's "Special Unit 2." The premise could lend it to be a younger cousin of "The X Files" Still haven't figured out why there isn't a female lead. What They Say A happily married cop's life is turned upside down when his son is kidnapped and never found. Four years later, he's divorced and working as a private detective when a near-death experience makes him begin receiving communications from lost souls beyond the grave. After the kidnapping of his son and subsequent divorce from his wife, once-successful police detective Frank Taylor (Matthew Fox) has become a sullen private eye. His life is changed beyond belief when a near-death experience causes him to be haunted by otherworldly souls who help him solve cases.

Extractions: by Norm Bond In February of this year the NAACP and it's coalition partners representing Latinos, Asian American, and Native American groups, signed far reaching agreements with the CBS television network and the FOX broadcasting company. These were designed to increase opportunities for people of color in programming and the executive, production, and talent ranks of network television. Later ABC and NBC television adopted goals and timetables for increasing opportunities for people of color at the television networks. It was in November of 1999 when the NAACP held public hearings in Los Angeles to examine the pattern of discriminating treatment by the television industry against African Americans, Latino, Native Americans and other minorities. A capacity crowd jammed the Westside Room at the Century Plaza Hotel and Towers in LA, California to hear what many have known for a long time. Actors Blair Underwood (City of Angels, LA Law), Apensenahkwat (Northern Exposure) actresses Erika Alexander (Cosby, Living Single) Ann Marie Johnson (JAG, In the Heat of the Night), and producer/director Yvette Lee Bowser (Living Single) presented their personal testimony. The NAACP has monitored the portrayal of African Americans in television since 1951. The agreements were reached between the networks and the NAACP after the networks were threatened with the "risk of a sustained, focused, and continuous consumer action in the form of repetitive boycotts, picketing, and large scale demonstrations in front of their network headquarters, the offices of network owned affiliates nationwide and the headquarters of their major advertisers". Kweisi Mfume NAACP President stated that, "only real results, in the form of real change will demonstrate their commitment."

Extractions: CBS Slate To Return Focus On 25-54 Demographic By Gary Levin NEW YORK (Variety) - Despite the hard lessons learned by the networks in trotting out 42 new series last fall, CBS Entertainment president Leslie Moonves expects much the same to happen next season. "There's still going to be the same problem," Moonves told reporters Thursday after unveiling the Eye web's fall development slate to nearly 400 advertisers and financial analysts. "There'll still be 35 of them." Still, he added, the networks "will look at more diversity; people are moving back to where they were" before the disastrous 1995-96 season, when everyone aped leader NBC and programmed for the same 18-49-year-old urban audience. For its part, CBS now plans to refocus on the 25-54 crowd and "especially right in the middle of that target," said CBS network president Jim Warner. "This is where the audience is growing, and it is CBS' strength. It is our hitting zone." Moonves pointed to recent ratings rebounds along with new commitments for series with Bill Cosby and Ted Danson as evidence of the "cautious optimism at CBS these days. Living through the disappointments of the last season has not been easy, but we feel like we've stopped the bleeding and have begun taking baby steps in the right directions." Season-to-date ratings are down 15%, however, and only one of CBS' 11 freshman series is likely at this point to get a renewal: "Almost Perfect," the Nancy Travis/Kevin Kilner sitcom recently moved to Mondays.
