He comes from a multicultural background; his father is from Nicaragua and his mother, from El Salvador. He has known celebrity and success, but his life has not been easy. Benard struggles with manic depression (also called bipolar disorder ), a very serious mental illness. He is one of the first Hollywood actors and members of the Hispanic community who have had the courage to speak out publicly about this illness. By doing so, he hopes others will ignore stigma and get help when they need it-and to stay on the prescribed medications they may need to stay well. Benard first disclosed his history in 1996, but it didn't get much notice until March 2000. During the nationally televised Soap Opera Digest Awards , he received the honor of "Favorite Actor," one of five categories swept up by his show. Trembling and teary-eyed, he concluded his acceptance remarks with a very emotional call to "all you manic-depressives out there" to never give up hope or dreams. Since that moment, Benard has emerged as the only Hollywood actor willing to talk openly and repeatedly about his serious mental illness. He is helping to break down barriers of ignorance, fear, and stigma.

We were both like "we have to be there". Now normally his wouldn't seem like a big deal considering the mall is only a half an hour away from campus...but we don't have a car so this required extensive planning. After a few days of planning we managed to get a friend from home to take off of work and come up Friday night. We then got up at 5:30 am Saturday morning so that we could be at the mall by 7:00 am when it opened. Sure enough we found the mall and we were the FIRST people in line!!!!! We were so excited even though he wasn't going to be there for another 4 and half-hours. So we just sat on the floor and talked until he arrived. As time got closer more people showed up and by 11 am, there were tons and tons of people. Sara (my roomy) and my friend Kristy and I were all waiting with our cameras ready!! As the minutes SLOWLY (and I mean very slowly) ticked by all I could think of was that I have wanted to meet Maurice for 9 years and I was finally going to do it. Then security began to try to clear a way for Maurice to come through and we were all getting smashed by all the people trying to cut in line and get pictures. Finally after what seemed like an eternity Maurice walked through the door and started walking to the stage. There were suddenly so many people in my way that I just put my camera in the air and starting taking pics. Everyone stared screaming (including me I must admit) and he looked so cute and completely shocked that so many people were there. Then he started talking to all of us and answering a few questions. The crowd all started singing him happy birthday because his birthday was on Mon. Then he continued to answer questions, he told everyone that his wife was going to have a baby in an about a month and a half. He asked us all if we were happy he was back and everyone stated screaming. He was soo cute and he kept looking down and blocking his eyes because so many cameras were going off. The three of us just kept snapping our cameras and hoping we were getting good pics. Then the greatest thing happened. Someone was holding up a baby and Maurice looked over and was like what a cute baby. Then in the most amazing voice I think I have ever heard Maurice said "hi sweetheart".... I thought I was going to die right then and there. Everyone was screaming and pushing and I still couldn't believe I was there let alone the first person. Then the one security guard came over and asked who was first in line and I said that I was. She grabbed my hand and told me that I couldn't walk behind the table etc. etc. and that it had to be fast. I walked up to him and I couldn't believe it. He looks soooo much better in person. I just stood there like a complete idiot and I didn't know what to say. So I held out my hand and he shook it. Then this stupid guy that was with him was like, everyone has to keep moving I was only there for two seconds. Maurice picked up one of the promotional pictures that he had with him and said " well I'll give you one of these...and then I'll shake your hand" I took the pic and shook his hand. Then I wanted to take a picture of him but the guy was rushing all of us and was trying to take off Maurice's coat so my pic didn't really turn out. The I had to leave the stage. My friends caught up with me and we were all screaming like idiots and jumping up and down yelling " we met him". I still couldn't believe it and I was shaking and hoping that I got at least some good pics because I really wasn't paying attention. We walked back and picked up our stuff and talked to a few of the fans that were there. I looked back at Maurice on the stage and everyone being rushed by and I couldn't believe that it was over. My roommate and I have the pic on our wall and we talk about how amazing he was every time we see him on General Hospital. He is such an amazing actor and I will always remember his voice saying " hi sweetheart' to the little baby. My roomy and I hope that we get the opportunity to meet him again!
