Extractions: Coronation Street actress Amanda Barrie - who plays Alma Halliwell - will leave the top-rated ITV soap next summer. The 65-year-old performer, who has been in the show for 11 years, said she took the decision after much "soul searching". She is one of a number of big names to announce their departure in the soap's 40th anniversary year. Others include Charlie Lawson (Jim McDonald), Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby) and Martin Hancock (Spider Nugent). Barrie said: "As both the show and I have reached special birthdays this year, I thought it was about time I bowed out in the hope that there's one more show in me. "I want to endlessly thank Granada and Coronation Street, but there has to be a time when things come to an end. "This is something I've been thinking about for ages, but couldn't face up to the emotion of leaving or tear myself away.

Extractions: Valerie Hall's (Niagara Falls, ONT) 11th power play goal of the season gave Niagara the first lead of the game late in the first period. In the waning minutes of the period St. Lawrence goalie Rachel Barrie was tested with a barrage of shots. It appeared nothing was getting by her until a slap shot from just inside the blue line by Linda Groff (Amherst, NY) was redirected by Hall into the back of the net. After a scoreless second period Niagara went into the third with their 1-0 lead and a 14-0-0 record when leading after two periods, while St. Lawrence was 0-3-1 when trailing after two. With just under 10 minutes in regulation, the Saints came marching in when Amanda Sargeant scored a power play goal to tie the game. Sargeant skated in front from behind the Niagara goal and snuck a shot over Tania Pinelli's (Hamilton, ONT) glove-side shoulder as a crowd in front of the net obstructed Pinelli's view. The score remained deadlocked at one as the third period came to an end. In the overtime session Niagara was held without a shot on goal as they spent most of the time in their defensive zone but stood strong to deny St. Lawrence any solid opportunity to tie the game. This was just Niagara's third overtime game of the season. The Purple Eagles are now 2-0-1 in extra session games.
