Wkrótce bêdziecie mieli w Warszawie negra Irê Aldridgea, jest to doskona³y tragik, w tym rodzaju niemal dot¹d niewidzialny. By³em na "Otello". Piêæ lat póniej, wracaj¹c z Rosji, artysta wystêpuje z Towarzystwem Aktorów Anastazego Trapszy w Radomiu i Bytomierzu. Back to Top Marian Anderson was born on February 27, 1897. Her education was very good but was stopped by the death of her father, followed by the death of her grandfather. Her father died when she was 13, and she and her mother were forced to work to support the family. All along she sang in the church choir. Later, she studied with voice teachers. She sang to President Roosevelt. In 1939, she was to sing at Constitution Hall, but the Daughters of the Revolution who owned the hall would not allow it because she was black. Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of the president, withdrew her membership in protest. Mrs. Roosevelt then arranged for Marian Anderson to sing at the Lincoln Memorial and 75,000 people heard her sing. She became the first African-American to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Anderson died on April 8, 1993 at the age of 93.

Articles ira frederick aldridge, one of the world's greatest actors, was bornin the early years of the nineteenth century, probably 1810. http://www.marcusgarvey.com/zIra Aldridge.htm
Extractions: According to the first, he was born in New York City, the son of an African prince and a colored American woman. This prince, so the story goes, was the sole survivor of a revolt in Africa in which his father, the king, and other members of his family were slain. Rescued by missionaries, the prince was taken to America and trained for the ministry, eventually becoming an excellent preacher. To the above may be added certain interim details as the fact that he had, previous to his success in London, such bitter disappointments and so many refusals from managers to play the part of Othello that he returned to America in ~83o, but getting even less consideration from the American managers, he went back to England, determined to win.

Extractions: Lesson Overview This online lecture will discuss the first African American theater company in the United States, the African Grove Theater. Free Blacks established the theater in New York City in 1821. Even though the company folded after only two years of play production, the theater was important because it provided an opportunity for African Americans to present plays that gave them dignity. The lecture will also discuss the arrival of African Americans in the United States and the lifestyles that determined their daily activities. Free Blacks in the United States Ira Aldridge and The Black Doctor Most African Americans arrived in the United States as enslaved people between 1619 and 1808. Many were transported to work on small farms and plantations in the South however; many African Americans also earned their freedom and worked for small landowners or in the households of town dwellers. Between 1800 and 1810 the number of free Blacks in the United States doubled. By 1810, 75 percent of the African Americans who lived in the urban north were free. They were concentrated in the cities of New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Free Blacks in the north generally worked as domestic servants or in subsistence farming. There were some who worked as skilled artisans in trades such as blacksmithing or carpentry. Some free blacks also worked on the docks and in the shipping industry loading and unloading boats. The two men who founded the African Grove Theater, William Henry Brown and James Hewlett, were stewards who worked on ships. Through their work, they were able to travel back and forth between England, New York, and the Caribbean and to see theatrical productions.
