Extractions: Marcus Mosiah Garvey was born in Jamaica in 1887, of peasants of pure African stock. At an early age, he devoted himself to securing advancement for his race. In 1914, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and two years later went to New York, where he set up a branch of the Association and began publishing the militant weekly Negro World Catch a Fire , which was a modest success. Though carrying out other musical work - for singer Johnny Nash, for example - Marley continued to record and tour with The Wailers. His songwriting skills developed apace; in 1974 Eric Clapton had a hit with Marley's I Shot the Sheriff and in 1975 The Wailers had their first major hit with No Woman No Cry Exodus , which featured Marley's biggest hits, including Jamming, Waiting in Vain and One Love . By 1980, Marley had a worldwide following, and his music had become closely associated with the black political independence movement and freedom fighting in general. His health, however, was deteriorating, and in 1981 Marley died from cancer at the age of only thirty-six.

Aug. 7, 1867, Lódz, Pol.), black tragedian, considered one of the greatest interpreters of his day. Accounts of his life in the United States are conflicting. The great British-American actor James William Wallack is believed to have engaged him as a personal attendant while visiting the United States. Aldridge set about to study for the stage, moving to England in the mid-1820s. In 1833 he made a highly successful debut in London as Othello at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. Billed as the "African Roscius," after the great Roman comic actor, he made triumphant tours of Europe in several Shakespearean roles, including Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth. After 1853 he played mostly on the Continent, receiving honours from the Emperor of Austria, in Switzerland, and in Russia, among others. Aldridge was planning a trip back to the United States, but it is doubtful that he ever returned; he became an English citizen in 1863.

Educated at New York's African Free School and briefly at University of Glasgow, Scotland. Active in New York amateur theatre. Made his professional stage debut as the first black actor at Royal Coburg Theatre, London on 10th October 1825 playing role of Prince Oroonoko of Africa sold into slavery in melodrama The Revolt of Surinam, or A Slave's Revenge. Toured established theatre circuits in provinces of British Isles for 27 years as star of about 60 roles in melodrama, romantic drama, operetta, comedy and Shakespeare. Herbert Marshall, in his book Ira Aldridge: The Negro Tragedian, feels that evidence points to the fact that Aldridge was born in New York on the 24th of July 1807. Legend has it that Aldridges forefathers were princes of the Fulah tribe in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Aldridges father, Daniel Aldridge, was taken to America by a missionary and sent to school at Schenectady College, New York. Some sources say that Ira was born after Daniel Aldridge returned to his native land with his American black wife. Nine years later civil war broke out in Senegal, and the family fled to America. Other stories have it that Daniel Aldridge was actually a slave and was born in New York in 1772. Ira Aldridge went to the African Free School in New York City and at an early age developed an interest in the theater. He took odd jobs and raised money for a ticket to the fourth gallery of the Park Theater, where he saw the great American and British actors. He made his first appearance as Rolla in Pizzaro at the African Theater in New York and went on to play Shakespeares Romeo and later on Hamlet. His performance as Hamlet was seen by Charles Matthews, a member of Charles Dickenss circle. Matthews later parodied this performance and Iras rendition of the song "Opossum Up a Gum Tree," which was a sort of national anthem of the Negroes. Aldridges realization that Negro actors in New York were ridiculed, and that even amateur attempts on their part aroused jealousy, led him to emigrate to England.

His father Daniel, who was a lay preacher and straw vendor, and his mother, Lurone, were free blacks. Ira's mother died in 1818, when he was a boy. Ira attended the African Free School where he won many oratory contests. In order to improve his acting skills, he toured the provinces, including Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Lancaster and Liverpool. For seven years, he starred in the plays, "Oroonoko," "The Slave," "Othello," "The Revenge," and "The Padlock." Herbert and Stock, the authors of the biography "Ira Aldrige," explain the significance of Aldridge's Liverpool appearance: "the greatest centre of the slave trade in the United Kingdom, where only three years before he had landed as an unknown, penniless stranger. One can imagine the feelings of the pro-slavery elements at the presumption of this Negro to appear in anti-slavery plays like "Oroonoko," "The Revenge," and "The Padlock," and furthermore to see a well-known star like Vandenhoff playing his Iago and a white woman, Miss F.H. Kelly, playing his Desdemona! Such a leap in so short a time was indeed something unparalleled in theatre history, as well as a unique challenge to racial superiority." At the close of many of his performances, Aldridge would play the guitar and sing an anti-slavery song. On final nights of his performances, he delivered addresses that focused on the injustices of slavery. In 1832, he distributed an address to the audience entitled "Willian Tell, the Swiss Patriot." Part of it read, "I risk my all upon thy powerLifesonyea, country, too; To free my brethren, fetter'd slaves, From sinking in inglorious graves." He regularly contributed to the abolitionist movement and the Negro State Conventions.

Cade Library Black History Theme 2003: The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month. " What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studiedor even documentedwhen the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books. We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson . Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American populationand when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Established Journal of Negro History Woodson, always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history.
