Jan Akkerman wordt nog steeds beschouwd als de invloedrijkste gitarist die Nederland heeft voortgebracht. Wereldfaam verwierf hij toen hij door het Engelse tijdschrift Music Maker werd uitgeroepen tot 'beste gitarist van de wereld'. Hij werd geboren op Kerstavond 1946 in de Amsterdamse Jordaan. Als peuter pingelde hij al op zijn speelgoedpianootje en op zijn vijfde kreeg hij een, zoals dat in de Amsterdamse volksmond heette, trekkast. Tot zijn tiende bleef hij zijn accordeon trouw, hoewel hij tussentijds de trotse bezitter werd van een gitaar. Hij kreeg privélessen van Gerard Gest, die al gauw merkte met een natuurtalent te maken te hebben. Dat blijkt vooral uit zijn weerzin tegen muziektheorie en solfège. Gespééld moet er worden! In 1958 maakt Jan Akkerman zijn eerst soloplaat "Exodus". The Friendship Sextet was de eerste (school)band van enig lokaal belang, maar Johnny & His Cellar Rockers was de groep waarmee hij in Nederland voor het eerst naam maakte. Zijn bekendheid werd nog groter met The Hunters, waarmee hij in 1966 de hit "Russian Spy And I" maakte. Drie jaar later werd Brainbox opgericht, waarvan ook Kaz Lux als succesvol zanger deel uit maakte. In 1970 verliet Jan de band om toe te treden tot Focus, waarmee hij samen met Thijs van Leer belangrijke internationale successen boekte. Die leidden ondermeer tot de toekenning van de Nederlandse Exportprijs van het Ministerie van Economische Zaken. Focus valt in 1976 uiteen en Jan gaat dan op de solotoer. Overigens verrijst Focus later, in 1985, nog één keer uit de as, maar die reunion is maar van korte duur. De naam van Akkerman wordt genoemd in combinatie met die van vele grootheden:

With the demise of Focus in the late seventies Jan Akkerman has continued to release a string of successful albums (twenty to date), whilst maintaining his ground breaking work in the neo classical jazz/rock field. His live appearances had become increasingly rare outside of his native Holland until in May 1999 Jan played five shows in the U.K. before large, enthusiastic audiences prompting a desire to perform on stage more often. Het blijkt een korte, maar heftige liefde. Binnen een jaar heeft Jan de band weer verlaten. Naar eigen zeggen is hij door de manager uit de band gezet. Een vreemde gang van zaken, aangezien de groep meteen dat eerste jaar drie hitnoteringen weet te realiseren. Eind 1969 treedt jan echter toe tot het Thijs van Leer Trio. Het Thijs van Leer Trio vormt de aanzet tot de supergroep Focus, dat overigens zeer bescheiden debuteert. Ze spelen eerst als begeleidingsband bij de Amsterdamse uitvoering van Hair, nemen vervolgens een single op met Neerlands Hoop en vervolgens wat tracks van Bojoura. En tot slot op eigen kracht, met de elpee In And Out Of Focus. Hoewel er met het nummer House Of The King al een hit wordt gescoord, laat de plaat nog niet de richting horen waarmee Focus later beroemd zal worden.
