Extractions: Hello, diva lovers! Lots o' news as we go into the holiday weekend. Enjoy! . . . BETTY BUCKLEY Our very own Betty Buckley who is currently shooting episodes for the final season of HBO's gritty jailhouse series "Oz" will offer two separate master classes this summer in New York. A long-time instructor at the T. Schreiber Studio, Buckley will teach master classes in both Song Interpretation and Scene Study in July and August. The Song Interpretation workshops will be held Thursdays, July 18 and 25 and Aug. 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 7 to 11 PM, and the Scene Study classes are scheduled for 6:30 to 11:30 PM on Mondays, July 22 and 29 and Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26. I recently had the chance to chat with the Tony-winning Buckley, who recently completed an acclaimed run in A. R. Gurney's Buffalo Gal at the Buffalo Arena Theatre. BB spoke about her upcoming classes and her methods of instruction. "I teach meditation as the means for focusing the actors' mind, and spiritual philosophy as the basis for making one's choices," the former Sunset Boulevard star said. "The song interpretation class teaches how to tell stories in song, how to interpret a song and how to connect with an audience. [Students will] work on their songs several times over the six-week period. It's a long, detailed process." That class, Buckley added, will have a pianist, Eugene Gwozdz, to accompany students on their journeys in song.

Extractions: The Hubble Space Telescope was fitted with a new set of solar arrays after a 6.5-hour spacewalk by Tom Akers and Kathy Thornton. These unique power-generating wings, supplied by the European Space Agency, will power the telescope for at least the remainder of the decade. Derek Eaton, ESA project manager, was overjoyed with the success of the day's spacewalk. "To build two such massive arrays some years apart to such tight tolerances and have one replace the other with so few problems is a tribute to the design and manufacturing skills of ESA and British Aerospace, the prime contractor for the arrays", he said. "The skill of Kathy and Tom contributed greatly to this success". The astronauts began their spacewalk at 09h30 p.m. CST (04h30 a.m. CET, Monday). Their first task was to jettison the troublesome solar array that failed to retract yesterday. Perched on the end of the shuttle's robot arm, 7.5 metres above the cargo bay, Thornton carefully released the array. ESA astronaut Claude Nicollier then pulled the arm away from the free-floating panel and mission commander Dick Covey fired the shuttle's thrusters to back away.

A Nice Guy Who Lost His Compass A Time for Careful Reflection for IBM PHOENIX, January 26, 1993... The horses are starting to drink again The IBM Board, which only 24 hours ago was supposed to be giving "full support" to the company's CEO according to IBM's PR department, gave John Akers a well-deserved boot. At least three to eight years late, the IBM Board members were among the last to admit that the "emperor had no clothes." A good time for IBM's shareholders, customers, or employees to rejoice? It is not. It is a time for careful reflection; a time to weigh the options which will shape the IBM future. Akers' departure is but a first step on a possible , but not a certain, IBM recovery. New CEO Selection Process to Shape IBM's Future Whether or not IBM will recover will depend to a large extent on the decisions which the newly-formed Selection Committee of the IBM Board makes in the process of selecting the new CEO. If they merely try to replace John Akers with another executive whom they feel is more competent to do the same job which Akers had held, our advice to the shareholders will be continue heading for the hills, only faster!

Extractions: The Rescue Of Intelsat-VI 603 Manual capture of the Intelsat VI by astronauts Thuot, Hieb, and Akers 5/92 It was March 14, 1990 that the International Telecommunications Satellite Consortium (INTELSAT) launched the third of five Intelsat-VI satellites atop a Titan-3 rocket. Each is cylandrical, nearly twelve feet in diameter and 17.5 feet in height. At the time of this writing, this series makes up the largest commercial spacecraft ever launched. All five satellites have a life of thirteen years and are built to maintain communications from a geosynchronous orbit With this launch, however, the second stage of the rocket failed to separate from the satellite due to faulty wiring between them. This left the satellite in an orbit too low and too unstable for it to be of any use. Controllers from the ground needed to work quickly to prevent the satellite from re-entering the atmosphere where it would have completely incinerated. They jettisoned the second stage by releasing the perigee kick motor, which would have been used to send the satellite into its proper orbit. Ground controllers then used some of the satellite's limited supply of propellant to boost it into a somewhat higher and certainly safer orbit while NASA engineers discussed possibilities for how to proceed. After much discussion, NASA elected to salvage the satellite using the space shuttle, finding it the most cost effective way to remedy the situation. perigee kick motor to the satellite and release it using timed springs once the two were safely back in the cabin of the shuttle. Ground controllers would then activate the kick motor and send Intelsat 603 from a height of 200 nautical miles to a height of 22,300 nautical miles.
