    Extractions: Multilevel algorithms for the solution of boundary-value and initial-boundary-value partial differential equations have gained popularity over the past two decades. These algorithms are very simple to program. Not only are they very efficient, they also take into account the physical dynamics of the underlying continuum problem. Multigrid techniques are based on hierarchical structure, ultimately reducing the errors systematically at different levels of the hierarchy. The goal of this research program is to further examine the applicabilities of the these numerical techniques and to incorporate the recently developed psi calculus with the hope of improving performance. Computer programs written using psi calculus primitives have the advantage of being dimension independent. Our preliminary results using the Poisson equation in two-dimension are promising. The simple V-cycle multilevel technique was used. The fine to coarse (restriction) and the coarse to fine (prolongation) conversions were done using psi calculus. Although no optimization have been exploited, the time complexities for the regular program and modified program (with psi calculus) seem to compare favorably with each other. Since the relaxation technique is what constitutes the computational bottleneck of the multigrid program, we are currently researching into ways to reduce this part to psi calculus.     Extractions: Integration of First Year Calculus and Physics Courses Two instructors at College of the Rockies devised a team teaching system to integrate the first year University Studies Calculus and Physics courses into a single course. In this course, Physics content motivates the Calculus concepts and the Calculus concepts provide the foundation for the Physics. The goal is to demystify both disciplines by showing their inter-relationship and, thereby, to increase student success. The two instructors involved in this project attended a professional development session several years ago focussed on collaborative teaching. They decided to try this approach. After a year, they refined the idea further by integrating their two disciplines. Locally Initiated Curriculum funding was made available through MAETT to assist with the initial development of the concept. The completion rate in Calculus for students across North America is only 50% while the completion rate in Physics is about 75%. By integrating the two disciplines, it is hoped that students will be able to see how each informs the other. Students are encouraged to move away from "compartmentalizing" the two disciplines. This year, a pre-test of the students in the combined course showed scores that were low in comparison to previous years.
