Perhaps no living thing has evoked this sense more than the bird of paradise. By the nineteenth century the bird was coveted by national museums and private natural history collectors alike. Photographer: Rodney Start. One of these collectors was Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) who, in 1854, ventured to the Malay Archipelago of South-East Asia in search of natural history specimens. While there, he gained the insight regarding natural selection which was to make him the co-author, with Charles Darwin, of the theory of evolution. During 1860 Wallace collected twenty-four red birds of paradise from the island of Waigeo, which today is part of Indonesia. At least one of these was forwarded to Professor Frederick McCoy, director of the National Museum of Victoria, but not directly from Waigeo. It went first to John Gould, one of the London suppliers of McCoy's natural history ark. Whatever was new to natural science passed by the knowing eye of this great naturalist.     Extractions: Many of the works in the Tippmann Collection are European travel narratives dating from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. These works focus on the natural history and sometimes specifically on the insects of a region or country. Explorers, often accompanied by naturalists and artists, traveled to Asia, South America, and Antarctica in search of adventure. The naturalists on these voyages described and collected the flora and fauna of a region, while the artists drew specimens for future publication. Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) was a British naturalist and entomologist, who amassed large general collections of Amazonian specimens during fourteen years of field work. Accompanied by Alfred Russel Wallace, he set out to become a professional collector of specimens in the Amazon in 1848. Bates discovered that closely related species often were separated geographically by rivers, but he did not realize this was evidence of geographical speciation. Bates studied color patterns in butterflies, which defined Batesian mimicry, a natural phenomena in which nonpoisonous species mimic the bright warning colors of poisonous ones. "Pre-Darwinian" is operationally defined as any evolutionist writings published prior to the 1859 (appearance of Origin of Species ), the year when the social and scientific context of evolutionary explanation for biological diversity underwent its most significant and fundamental paradigm shift.     Extractions: Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace Known around the world is the name of Charles Darwin and his history changing book "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" subtitled "the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life" published in 1859. As a young man Charles Darwin was always interested in nature, but since his father saw no future in being a naturalist, he was sent to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. At 16 he left Edinburgh without a degree and enrolled in Christ College at Cambridge University to become a clergyman, since most naturalists of the day were clergyman. He Received his B.A. degree in 1831 in theology and was recommended by the Reverend John Henslow, professor of botany, to Captain Robert Fitzroy of the HMS Beagle to participate in a surveying voyage around the world. Darwin was 22 years old when they sailed from England in December 1831 with the primary mission of charting sections of the South American coastline. While the crew charted the coastline, Darwin observed the distinctive nature of South America and was puzzled by the geographic distribution of species. At the Galapagos Islands Darwin came across several types of finches that although were very similar had apparent adaptations to their particular environments. By the time they had sailed from the Galapagos Darwin had read Lyell's Principles of Geology, and began to doubt the Church's position that the earth was only a few thousand years old. Later Darwin would theorize that these new forms were the result of the accumulation of adaptations to a different environment (Campbell 1990, 428-429).

Tymn - A British naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) was co-originator with Charles Darwin of the natural selection theory of evolution. When Darwin made his conclusions public before the Linnaean Society, London, in 1858, he also presented Wallace's parallel theory. It was Wallace who popularized the phrase "the survival of the fittest." In his younger years, Wallace was a scientific materialist. "I was so thorough and confirmed a materialist that I could not at that time find a place in my mind for the conception of spiritual existence, or for any agencies in the universe than matter and force," Wallace writes in the preface. Curious as to psychical phenomena, especially mesmeric trance and levitation, Wallace began investigating and soon recognized the reality of the phenomena. "I thus learnt my first great lesson in the inquiry into these obscure fields of knowledge, never to accept the disbelief of great men, or their accusations of imposture or of imbecility, as of any weight when opposed to the repeated observations of facts by other men admittedly sane and honest," Wallace further wrote. He expanded his investigation to include trance mediums, automatic writers, and spirit photographers. The smug whisperings and arrogant guffaws of his closed-minded scientific colleagues did not deter him. "I assert without fear of contradiction, that whenever the scientific men of any age have denied the facts of investigators on a priori grounds, they have always been wrong," he responded. He affirms that he ruled out all possible fraud or deception in his investigations.
