    Extractions: In 1814, following the fall of Napoleon, Stendhal went to Italy where, during a 7-year sojourn, he wrote the critical art treatise L'Histoire de la peinture en Italie (1817) and a book of personal reminiscence and scholarly studies entitled Rome, Naples, et Florence en 1817 (1817). The latter was his first work published under the pseudonym Stendhal. Accused by the Austrian government then ruling northern Italy of supporting the Italian underground movement for independence, Stendhal was expelled from Italy in 1821. He returned to France, the ban against followers of Napoleon having been lifted, and settled in Paris to read, keep copious notebooks, and write. A year later he finished his famous De l'amour (1822), a semiautobiographical treatise on the nature of love, inspired by one of the many women to whom he was attracted throughout his life. In this work he expounded his avant-garde opinions on marriage, the role of women, morals, and politics. In 1830, following the ascension of Louis Philippe to the French throne, Stendhal was appointed French consul in Trieste, Italy. In 1831 he was transferred to the smaller consulate at Civitavecchia, near Rome, where he wrote his two principal novels. The Red and the Black (1830; trans. 1926) analyzes contemporary society through the eyes of Julien Sorel, an ambitious French provincial youth who attempts to rise in the world by becoming first a soldier and then later a priest. The Charterhouse of Parma (1839; trans. 1925) is concerned with the fortunes of Fabrizio del Dongo, a young noble who becomes involved in the political intrigues of the duchy of Parma. Stendhal remained at Civitavecchia until he died of apoplexy on March 23, 1842, while on sick leave in Paris.

Lettre de Stendhal à Honoré de Balzac 30 octobre 1840 Stendhal s'est souvent vanté d'écrire pour un petit nombre de ses contemporains : "J 'écris pour des amis inconnus, une poignée d'élus qui me ressemblent : les happy few." indique-t-il dans la Vie d'Henry Brulard . Puis, joueur, il ajoute " je mets un billet de loterie dont le gros lot se résume à ceci : être lu en 1935 ". A sa mort, en 1842, à l'exception de Balzac, Mérimée, Barbey d'Aurevilly et de quelques autres, les contemporains de Stendhal n'ont pas reconnu la portée de son œuvre. En 1865, plus de vingt ans après, Le Grand Dictionnaire Universel du XIXème siècle a d'ailleurs cette formule réductrice : "… il n'a l'étoffe ni d'un grand écrivain, ni d'un grand penseur, ni d'un grand critique ".

März 1842 starb, erschien kein Nachruf in der Zeitung und auch die Würdigungsartikel blieben aus. Nur drei Personen gaben dem Toten das letzte Geleit. Keiner glaubte an den Nachruhm des Schriftstellers. Auch Prosper Mèrimèe , einer seiner besten Freunde, sprach nur zaghaft die Hoffnung aus, daß vielleicht ein Kritiker des 20. Jahrhunderts die Bücher Stendhals "aus dem Kehricht der Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts" entdecken und sich ihnen gegenüber gerechter zeigen werde als seine Zeitgenossen es getan haben. Wer ihn näher kannte, schätze ihn als geistvollen Plauderer und kultivierten Kunstkenner oder verabscheute ihn als liberalen Freigeist, als ironischen Kommentator der politischen Zustände, als gottlosen Republikaner, dem kein bürgerlicher Wert heilig war. Keiner sah in ihm den künftigen "Klassiker" der französischen Literatur, dessen Werke man einst in der ganzen Welt lesen würde. Victor Hugo äußerte, daß "von Herrn Stendhal" nichts bleiben werde, "nicht einen einzigen Augenblick hat er sich auch nur vorstellen können, was Schreiben eigentlich heißt." Mit mehr Scharfbick ausgestattet, erkannte Goethe in "Rot und Schwarz" einen der bedeutendsten Romane der Zeit, Balzac fällte über die "Kartause von Parma" ein noch überschwenglicheres Urteil.
