Amikor Ferdinánd visszatért, a kapitányt bebörtönözték a ceutai fegyházba; nyolc esztendõt töltött ott a legszörnyûbb nyomorúságban. Il est le fils de Chérubin Beyle, avocat au parlement et de Henriette Gagnon. Il n'aura aucune affinité avec son père " un homme extrêmement peu aimable, réfléchissant toujours à des acquisitions ou des ventes de domaine". Henri Beyle a pour précepteur l'abbé Raillane, et souffrira de sa tyrannie : " Je haïssais, l'abbé, je haïssais mon père, source des pouvoirs de l'abbé, je haïssais encore plus la religion au nom de laquelle, ils me tyrannisaient". ( La vie de Henry Brulard, publiée à titre posthume en 1890) En mai commence la grande aventure. Il a 17 ans, s'engage dans l'armée de réserve de Napoléon et va participer à la campagne d'Italie. Il va être ébloui par ce pays : ses paysages, les musées, l'opéra et … les italiennes. Milan, " le plus beau lieu de la terre" devient et restera sa patrie.

Marie Henri Beyle que éra su verdadero nombre nació en Grenoble, el 23 de enero de 1783, hijo de un abogado. Fue educado primero por un sacerdote jesuita y más tarde estudió en la École Centrale laica de Grenoble. Escapó de las limitaciones de la educación provinciana viajando a París, y a los 17 años ingresó en el ejército de Napoleón Bonaparte. Stendhal disfrutó de la vida social de los militares en Milán, pero en 1802 abandonó el ejército y llevó una vida bohemia en París. En 1806 se quedó sin dinero y volvió al ejército, donde desempeñó diversas misiones diplomáticas y participó en la fracasada campaña rusa de 1812. En 1814, tras la caída de Napoleón, Sthendal viajó a Italia, donde a lo largo de siete años escribió el tratado de crítica de arte Historia de la pintura en Italia (1817) y un libro de recuerdos personales y estudios académicos titulado Roma, Nápoles y Florencia en 1817 (1817). Esta última fue su primera obra publicada bajo el seudónimo de Stendhal. Acusado por el gobierno austriaco, que entonces gobernaba en el norte de Italia, de apoyar al movimiento de independencia italiano, Stendhal fue expulsado de Italia en 1821. Regresó a Francia cuando cesó la persecución de los defensores de Napoleón y se estableció en París para dedicarse a leer, llenar numerosos cuadernos de notas y escribir. Llevó una vida social e intelectual muy activa, frecuentando diversos salones literarios en los que destacó por su habilidad en el arte de la conversación. Un año más tarde terminó su famoso
