Extractions: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is an essential yoga text. "Sutra" is a Sanskrit word meaning "thread". In Indian philosophy a "sutra" is similar to our "epigram" or "aphorism" a statement in which the maximum meaning is packed into the minimum number of words. By its very nature it can be hard to understand, and a great deal of study, together with the guidance of a good teacher, is necessary to extract its true meaning. Who was Patanjali? No-one knows. There is some doubt about when exactly he lived suggested dates range from 5th century BCE to 2nd century CE. One thing we can be sure of is that he did not originate the teachings in the Yoga Sutras , but inherited a huge mass of earlier teachings; his contribution was to condense, systematise and refine these teachings. For a more detailed discussion of the identity of Patanjali, see Georg Feuerstein, The Yoga Tradition p.285. The concepts contained in the Yoga Sutras are a tool for developing an understanding of the human psyche. I have attempted here to introduce some of the main concepts in Chapters 1 and 2, and may in time add some from Chapters 3 and 4. In an attempt to clarify ideas contained in the sutras, I will gradually add links to each sutra in my selection, which will take you to the relevant place on a page of other translations, snippets from commentaries, anything else that seems to be helpful, and my own thoughts (for what they're worth!).

Da die Verblendung des Sehenden mit dem Gesehenem die Ursache des Leides ist, kann es vermieden werden. Die Ursache dieser Verbindung ist das Nichtwissen. Die Schau der unterscheidenden Erkenntnis, die nicht mehr in die Irre geht, ist der Weg, (das Nichtwissen) aufzugeben. Die Weisheit, die aus dieser (unterscheidenden Erkenntnis) entspringt, erstreckt sich auf sieben Stufen (des achtgliedrigen Yoga). Reinheit, innere Ruhe, Askese, eigenes Studium und Hingabe an Gott sind die inneren Disziplinen. Durch Hingabe an Gott erlangt man die vollkommene Versenkung.

In the 5 th nd century B.C, it was Sage Patanjali, who was the first to codify and present to posterity the ancient Indian heritage of Yoga, through his treatise the Yoga Darshana. The Yoga Darshana is such a deep, penetrating and all- encompassing study of the subject that the treatise which consisted of just 196 sutras (aphorisms), became his magnum opus. These Sutras were and are still the most profound and enlightening study of the human psyche. In just 196 aphorisms, he shows how through the practice of Yoga, we can transform ourselves, gain mastery over the mind and emotions, overcome obstacles to our spiritual evolution and attain the goal of yoga: kaivalya, liberation from the bondage of worldly desires. This treatise comprises of only 4 chapters and is in Sanskrit. Extractions: xxxix Related Links Foreword Sri Swami Venkatesanandaji was closely associated with Gurudev Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj, and he was a veritable personal assistant to Sri Gurudev. Swami Venkatesananda turned out enormous work every day by attending to correspondence, by writing articles and commentaries, which were all a kind of masterpiece in themselves. Right from the beginning we both were intimate friends and we used to discuss common topics in a humorous way, of which method of speaking Swami Venkatesananda was a master. He would always be smiling and cut jokes even when we were discussing serious subjects like the famous Yoga Vasistha that we used to read together after the lunch hour every day. This is a sort of background of my intimacy with Swami Venkatesananda. He liked me very much and I too liked him equally. He was a prolific writer and could write on any subject. The present occasion for me to write these few words is in connection with a series of lectures he delivered on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, all of which were systematically edited by a devotee called Swami Lakshmi Ananda from Perth, Australia.
