Extractions: Introduction to the Department of Geology William Harmon Norton's association with Cornell College spanned sevendecades, from 1866 to 1942. A Cornell graduate at age 18, Norton beganhis years of service to the college teaching Greek and Latin. As Norton'scareer developed according to his interests and needs, so Cornell grewinto new academic areas. Six years after his initial appointment, Norton was named Professorof Greek and Geology. Norton attributed this unusual alliance to alliteration, although he modestly admitted to "a certain interest in geology," and acknowledgedthat he had compiled a sizable collection of fossils. In fact, Norton'sself-education was such that he had redrawn the geologic map of Linn Countyentirely on his own, though he had virtually no formal geological training. Norton accelerated his self-education until geology could be weanedfrom its classical companion, and by 1890 the new Professor of Geologywas free to establish the first geology department in Iowa. Norton wrote, When once planted in a college curriculum it is hard to keep geologyfrom growing. There are always students who are eager to go farther on.So at Cornell the department grew during later decades, little by little, course by course, until it became one of the largest of the college inits registration, and required the full time of a professor and part timeof an assistant.

Extractions: W I N T E R South Hall: Demanded then abandoned Charles Milhauser South Hall was built after male students demanded on-campus housing. Within a decade, men wouldn't live there because of strict rules and supervision. As the college prepares for its sesquicentennial, South Hall will celebrate its 130th anniversary. It is the only Cornell building constructed in response to a student petition. The issue was discrimination: the college was offering women, but not men, the option of rooming and boarding on campus. The Cornell Boarding Association (CBA) or Gentlemen's Boarding HallOld Sem was the Ladies' Boarding Hallopened in January or February 1873, having cost about $8,000. It included 22 double-occupancy rooms, each with two windows and a wood-burning stove. The top two floors had eight rooms each. The first floor had six student rooms and a two-room suite for the cook. When engineering professor Sylvester Niles Williams and alumna Mary Fancher Williams married in 1876, they moved in as houseparents. Their son, Sylvester Vernon Williams, Class of 1901, was born in the building in 1883. Living conditions were less than ideal as evidenced in 1877 when four residents fired three revolvers and a shotgun at rats. Another rat was caught in the cook's trap. Two rows of outhouses descended downhill from the back of the building until 1916.
