    Extractions: Jane Austen was born the 7th of 8 children to the Reverend George Austen and his wife, Cassandra Leigh, on December 16, 1775, in the parsonage of Steventon, a village in Hampshire, England. She had 6 brothers (James, George, Edward, Henry, Francis, and Charles) and one sister, Cassandra. Her parents were both descended from ancient country families of more or less prosperous squires and professional men. This social milieu provided her with the scenes and subject matter of her work. Although she and her sister briefly attended several different schools, Jane was educated mainly by her father, who taught his own children and several pupils who boarded with the family.
