2-0 out of 5 stars mixed bag
While the Natural History Section of this Book is fine, with modest detail on the plants and animals, the book goes down hill when it get to History and Land Use Issues. The author seems extremely vindictive against the Mountain Cattlemen of Victoria, perhap a reflection of her battles with them as a member of the Victoria National Parks Association. Her bias shows up in many ways, such as those that agree with her are "caring" or "enlightened", those against her are "uninformed" or "greedy." Then again it seems the only self interested parties in the land use conflicts, in her view, are the Cattlemen (especially) and the loggers, but never the Greens, which is baloney of the first order. In total the book could have done better by sticking to the natural history aspect and steering clear of controversy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Both parks great content
A great book which shows both Yellowstone and tetons in a good balance of pictures.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for adults, great for kids, beautiful pictures
The first thing you notice about this book is the beautiful photographs by Michael H. Frances.May you take a single photograph in your visit that is as gorgeous as any of these!

Wilkinson provides a few pages of information about each of the charismatic megafauna in the parks: bison, wolves, elk, cougars, lynxes, and so on.These "chapters" are easily accessible and written at about a middle-school level. The book as a whole is very kid-friendly, though it wasn't necessarily written that way.

The book has very good advice for how, where, and when to spot mammals in these parks. The section on each animal concludes with "where to find bighorn sheep" (or whatever). We've successfully spotted most of these animals, initially relying on the advice here, though we now have a few secrets of our own.

Our favorite charismatic megafauna are bears, wolves, and cougars. We haven't spotted a cougar yet, and we haven't read as much about them.We do have a Wolf Freak in the household, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I found the book to be very helpful.Especially paired with "Scenic Driving in Yellowstone & Grand Teton".Other than the cats, we where able to get out early and find the wolves, grizzly, moose etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissappointing
The animal descriptions are very brief and basic. This book might be good for someone with little knowledge of wildlife but doesnt go into much detail on any animal. It also spends too much time on animals that it even states are rarely found in Yellowstone(ie Lynx) and says almost nothing about more common, although less exciting animals(various bird and small mammals).

3-0 out of 5 stars A good general guide
After buying many books like this I would suggest checking them out of the library for the length of your visit. We did not see the animals in this guide to back up the information and the locations but found it good for basic information about the animals and their habitats etc. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A novel look at Yellowstone
This is a departure from the many books that focus on Yellowstone's natural history. Meyer, instead, traces the park's human history and the development of images that first captured the public's attention and led toestablishment of the first national park. Most of the book is quitescholarly and analytical, gaining momentum when Meyer attempts to delveinto the minds of the first explorers to record and stand in amazement atYellowstone's wonders. Illustrated with many early drawings of the park,The Spirit of Yellowstone is not exactly light reading, but is a must forany serious student of the park. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alice Friman's Zoo
In "Trasformations," one of the poems in her latest book, Zoo, Alice Friman writes "My resident spider/sways in the silk grocery of her wheel,/weaving another language than what I know...."Luckily for us, Friman's language is poetry, and what she observes of the human condition is worth listening to for its newness, its visceral surprises. It is a language textured rich and sassy, sometimes painfully poignant as in Mary's Boys and Wrapping Up the Lost, the middle sections of the book dealing with ancestry, the loss and love of family. Friman's Zoo also takes the reader from the landscapes of Indiana to the plains of Africa and the coastal waters of Hawaii in poems layered with history, the natural violence of the animal world, and all the metaphorical wonders therein of a skillful and, at times, wondrous poet. In my opinion, the women are outdoing the men these days in the realm of poetry, and Alice Friman is one of the great doers in a very prolific period of publishing. ... Read more

Product Description
In a unique zoo in one of the world's most turbulent regions, one man wages a strange and heroic battle for its animals' survival.

The last Palestinian zoo stands on a dusty, deadend street in the once prosperous farming town of Qalqilya, on the very edge of the West Bank.

The zoo's bars are rusting; peacocks wander quiet avenues shaded by broad plane trees; a teenage baboon broods in solitary confinement; walls bear the pockmarks of gunfire. And yet the zoo is an extraordinary place, with a bizarre, troubling and inspiring story to tell. At the center of this story is Dr. Sami Khader, the only zoo veterinarian in the Palestinian territories. Family man, amateur inventor, and dedicated taxidermist, he is fiercely independent, apolitical, and resourceful in times of crisis. Dr. Sami dreams of transforming the zoo into one of an international caliber.

In The Zoo on the Road to Nablus, Amelia Thomas brings the reader into a world rarely glimpsed from the outside, weaving the stories of the zoo's animals, its staff, and its visitors into a rich, colorful chronicle of the indomitability of the human--and animal--spirit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
I came across this book through the recommendation of a friend. I was surprised at the extremes of emotion that are provoked by this book. I found myself laughing hysterically at the antics of Dr. Sami as he tried to keep his zoo running smoothly. At the end the story of the giraffe was very sad.
This book is very well written. It provides a unique insight into a volatile region. Speaking as an American, I am used to seeing people from this region reduced to caricatures by the news. This book shows the human side of the Palestinian people and how they deal with the occupation. This book is worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Determination in the face of chaos
This is a book that is interesting not only as the story of a zoo, but as a story of how people live during times of violence and war.Sami Khedar is the only veterinarian in Palestinian regions specializing in zoo animals.Although he is not the manager, he is the driving force behind the Qalailyazoo on the left bank of the Jordan river.Dr. Sami, as he is known, is determined to have a zoo that qualifies by international standards, and he is surprisingly undeterred by having to deal with war, in addition to standard, but exacerbated problems like red tape, competition for government funding, Sami nurses abandoned infants in his home, with the less than joyous cooperation of his wife.He builds three museums inside the zoo; he used his taxidermy skills to provide the exhibits for the Natural History Museum. He seeks assistance and animals from other zoos in the region, and often gets them with the help of other zookeepers and veterinarians who, like Sami, put their profession above politics. It is also somewhat surprising to read about life in a Palestinian city during the turmoil of Arab-Israeli struggles. I must say that I never expected one of the projects of the embattled government to be purchasing carnival rides to build a fun fair for the children.I guess that people struggle to maintain a normal life, and need to be able to convince themselves that their efforts will not be in vain. ... Product Description
While contemporaries and historians alike hailed the establishment ofBuffalo National Park in Wainwright, Alberta as a wildlife savingeffort, the political climate of the early 20th century worked againstit. The Canadian Parks Branch was never sufficiently funded to operateBNP effectively or to remedy the crises the animals faced as a result.Cross-breeding experiments with bison and domestic cattle provedunfruitful. Attempts at commercializing the herd had no success.Ultimately, the Department of National Defence repurposed the park formilitary training and the bison disappeared once more. ... Read more

"A fascinating and wide-ranging -history of zoos from the menageries attached to aristocratic palaces and villas in the 1500s to those in modern cities . . . provides the intriguing and often harrowing background to one of the most agonizing dilemmas of our time: with ever more species threatened with extinction in their natural habitat, should we seek to preserve them in special sanctuaries and if so where and how?"-The Times

"Not just a compendium of pretty pictures-though you'll be stunned by the 400 images-this book traces the history of zoos throughout the world. Among similar books, it is unique in exploring the social ramifications of our relations with the peaceable kingdom."-Library Journal, "Best Books of 2002"
