Editorial Review Product Description Female executives of large companies are still in short supply in the U.S., but they have made great strides in recent years and their number is growing. Patricia Werhane and four other leadership experts interviewed twenty-two prominent women—including executives at Kraft, Boeing, and Harley Davidson—to uncover their leadership styles, reveal their most effective practices, and find out how they broke through the glass ceiling. This celebration of stellar executives highlights their achievements, the values and visions that guide them, and the contributions they've made to both their companies and industries. Besides enjoying fascinating stories, readers—both men and women—will gain insights that help them manage and lead better. Despite enormous strides in the status of women in business, female CEOs of Fortune 500 companies can be counted on two hands, and less than 15 percent of Fortune 500 board seats are held by women. These daunting statistics, however, belie another phenomenon: The iceberg of male domination in the boardroom is beginning to break up and melt. More and more women are assuming positions of real leadership. And it's none too soon. With the increasing diversity of the workforce, businesses need the wisdom successful female executives can offer. To encourage more women to step up to the plate, this book tells many stories of perseverance and inventiveness. But it digs deeper to reveal common qualities and characteristics that reflect a style of leadership that is in stark contrast—in every major dimension, from communication styles to team building to crisis management—to the traditional, white-male model that has dominated practice, theory, and management education. While men tend to be transactional leaders, the women profiled in this book are nothing less than inspiring, transformational leaders. The result is an incisive, engaging, thought-provoking, and ultimately empowering narrative that will serve as a guide for women now entering, progressing, and leading in the workplace—as well as the men with whom they work. |

Editorial Review Product Description Develop a more diverse, creative, and resourceful pool of leadership talent for your company. Reinforced by the cutting-edge research and consulting expertise of Catalyst, America's premier nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women in business, this guide details the best practices of corporations noted for their ability to cultivate and leverage the abilities of their female employees. Stories of initiatives undertaken at Hewlett-Packard, JC Penney, and DuPont, among other companies--coupled with practical, hands-on advice--illustrate a compelling framework organizations can follow to more fully develop their own human capital at a time when no company can ignore a single source of competitive advantage. Customer Reviews (3)
Invaluable Benchmarks The Catalyst Award is given to those corporations whichhave achieved lasting, measurable results in this area. The book examinesmany of these corporations. For example: IBM, Avon Products, E.I. du Pontde Nemours, Eastman Kodak, Arthur Andersen, Motorola, American Airlines,Morrison & Foerster, McDonald's, J.C. Penney, Dow Chemical,Knight-Ridder, Texas Instruments, and Allstate. I hasten to point out thatmost (if not all) of the information and suggestions provided by the bookare also relevant to small-to-midsize organizations and may indeed be ofeven greater value to them than to (let's say) "Fortune 100"companies. Advancing Women in Business is divided as follows: Part I. Changing the System Part II. Best Practices Part III. Resources: The Catalyst Award "The Catalyst Approach" can maximize thevalue of a workforce by "capitalizing on the talents of women" only if allefforts are made within an "inclusive, problem-solving, comprehensiveprogram." Specifically, first establish a strong foundation by connectingeach initiative explicitly to a business rationale; next, build a fact baseby gathering information that will create the baselines for evaluating eachinitiative's progress; finally, develop, pilot, and implement action planswhose initiatives achieve practical solutions tailored to theorganization's environment. How? Several dozen corporations are examinedwhich illustrate what the "Catalyst Approach" requires of those involved inits implementation. Specific strategies and tactics are discussed. Resultsare measured and evaluated. I rate this book so highly because I think itis very well written, because it provides a wealth of important informationabout "best practices from the corporate leaders", and because it includesa number of practical suggestions as to HOW to derive greatest benefit fromthat information. By now, frankly, I had hoped that a gender-specific booksuch as this would be unnecessary in the year 2000. Well, unfortunately, itis. I now hope that enough people buy it and enough organizations areguided by it so that one day very soon, my granddaughters read it and thenask me "What's this all about? Was it really like that? That's ridiculous!"Yes it is.

Napoleon Hill's Message And he calls these people his invisible counselors. Aliza, in essense, is doing this, through "PowerTools For Women in Business," by telling the story of 10 women who continue to convert their most adverse life experiences into propelling causes, work and prospererty. Because, as Mary-Scott Welch, "Networking", said, "It helps a lot to get other women's ideas about your problems, not in the abstract but in the very specific terms of a real-life situation," a book like "PowerTools is a great beginning for women to walk through the examples of other women, to bring out the best in who we are. As a journalist, I have the opportunity to meet many authors, and I must say that some of them do not live the messages that they promotee in their books - but Aliza certainly does. This book contains easy to follow, real life stories of women maximizing their strengths, while never forgeting to be women. Thank you, Aliza for living your mission.

Editorial Review Product Description This book uniquely combines gender theory, case studies, and the legal challenges surrounding the mechanisms of gender discrimination at work. It provides the student with real-life examples from managers (based on interviews with people who experienced discrimination) that help students understand how gender discrimination operates, even when there are legal protections against it. At the end of each case study, students are asked to put themselves in the shoes of the individual experiencing the discrimination and ask themselves reflect on how they would handle the situation. Students must examine their own beliefs about gender and work place practices and consider consequences of actions they might take. In addition to the sections of theory, cases, and legal challenges, websites of interest are included student assignments and classroom activities. Key features include: |

Editorial Review Product Description Despite decades of ongoing inquiry and increasing interest, research on women in business and management remains a specialized field without mainstream acceptance within business and management disciplines. The handbook presents the current state of knowledge about women in business and management and specifies the directions for future research likely to be most constructive for advancing the representation, treatment, quality of life, and success of women who work in these fields. It provides the foundations for improved societal and organizational structures, policies, and relational practices affecting all in business and management. Thus, by enhancing the knowledge base that improves the work and life situations of women, it suggests ways to elevate the societal and organizational systems for all. The handbook will be an essential reference source for recent advances in research and theory, informing both scholars of organization studies, gender, diversity, and feminism; human resource specialists; and educators of and consultants to business organizations and management. Contents: Introduction; Part I: Societal Roles and Contexts of Women in Business and Management; Part II: Career and Work Life Issues of Women in Business and Management; Part III: Organizational Processes Affecting Women in Business and Management; Part IV: Women as Leaders in Business and Management; Index Contributors: N.J.
