1-0 out of 5 stars Muddled Reasoning, Flawed Conclusions
I purchased this work based on the glowing conclusions found on this page.I was somewhat crestfallen once I read the book to find that although Mr. Heselton appears to be a fine researcher, he lacks any scholarly or logical discernment on how do use that research.Annoyed for wasting my time and sure that someone other than myself must share this view, I searched the web to find this fine review by Brock, a Wiccan High Priest:

"Heselton has a bad habit of suggesting in one chapter that the available evidence may indicate that such-and-such is true, and then beginning his reasoning in the next chapter as if the such-and-such mentioned in the previous chapter was an established fact. One sees this all too often in the popular press, (Holy Blood, Holy Grail being but one horrible example of this sort of reasoning,) but it is disturbing to find it in a work intended to be a piece of serious scholarship. Heselton also makes what I view to be a serious error in his interpretations of the various entries in Dorothy Fordham's "diaries." He clearly views her allusions to a number of common images from classical mythology in those diary entries as evidence that Dorothy was pagan. In doing so, he, ignores the fact that Dorothy, who was born in 1880, received the sort of private, classical education traditional for a young woman of Britain's upper classes during the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods. Flowery allusions to classical themes were common features in formal writing (particularly of poetry), in the society in which Dorothy was raised, without being accorded any special meaning beyond being decorative. Such things were, in essence, evidence that the author had been properly educated. The inclusion of such things in a piece of verse would only be considered significant of something else when viewed from the context of a society where such ornate forms of writing have fallen wholly out of favor."

My thanks to Brock for this analysis, since I've wasted quite enough time on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading in the History of Wicca
This book, along with Hutton's _Triumph of the Moon_, is essential reading for anyone interested in an accurate history of Wicca. Heselton provides solid evidence of the people and places behind Gardner's discovery / invention of Wicca, offers his well-measured conjectures, and fills some of the gaps Hutton alludes to in his work. For those of us interested in the history of the Craft, a very, VERY important little book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a good scholarly examination of Gardner's Wiccan roots
Philip Heselton's book "Wiccan Roots: Gerald Gardner and the Modern Witchcraft Revival" should be recommended along with Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon" as a solid, scholarly examination of the roots of modern Wicca.

Heselton doesn't deal in unsupported claims about Wiccan history as far too many other Wiccan writers do.He sticks to the facts, and presents the results of his research in a clear, easy-to-read manner.

Like any good researcher, Heselton raises many new questions that need addressing while clearing up longstanding misunderstandings.The author doesn't pretend to have the definitive answer about whether Gardner really was just passing on an existing tradition or was instead inspired to put together the religion now known as Wicca.

Hesleton provides compelling evidence for the existence of a group of self-described witches who did in fact perform an initiation on Gardner, thus giving him a formal introduction to witchcraft.What remains to be determined, though, is whether what that group of witches practiced was anything like Gardnerian Wicca, and whether they did in fact have any sort of established pagan "tradition" which they passed on to him, rather than just a mishmash of occult and pagan lore.

Heselton has done the Wiccan community a great service.His book should be an excellent starting point, along with Ronald Hutton's "The Triumph of the Moon," into further scholarly research about our pagan past

5-0 out of 5 stars Jolly Good!!
Wiccan Roots is an excellent counter to Hutton's book Triumph of the Moon, providing the reader with credible altenative views and explanations (overlooked or ignored by Hutton).In effect, this book corrects some of the many errors found in Triumph of the Moon.A must have for every Witch/Wiccan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Research on Gerald Gardner Yet
This book focuses on Gerald Gardner and his web of contacts woven in its entirety.

Compiled by perhaps the most authoritative researcher on Gardner to date Philip Heselton, the text is bound with wonderful illustration from the personal journals of Gardner's associates, including extracts and photos from the previously unseen Boscastle archives, providing the most compelling evidence of Gardner's connections with 'Old Dorothy', his High Priestess 'Dafo', and involvement with the New Forest Coven in repelling the threatened WWII Nazi invasion of the United Kingdom.

It is immediately apparent the author has not only researched current knowledge to its furthest conclusion but has also taken the brave step of educated speculation on other associations, which is sure to provide further researchers with useful data.

One for any student into the roots of modern Paganism and the Wiccan religion - Excellent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I totally agree with the info on the back of the book...
Since it was put into more elequent language than I usually use, I will copy it for you to read.
Today the revival of interest in occult beliefs & practices is firmly centered in the return to the Goddess~the veneration of the Universal Feminine Principle which has for so long been neglected in our society.
This book- a practical manual for self initiation- shows how each of us can follow the Way of the Goddess, rediscovering the wisdom of Earth and Moon with a vision that is both intimate & profound.
Ly Warren-Clark, herself a practising Wiccan priestess, provides a practical overview of all the key rituals featuring the Goddess through the cycle of the seasons, including rituals for the Equinoxes & Solstices, & a complete guide to the traditional rituals of Samhain, the Bride, Beltaen & Olimelc.
The Way of the Goddess is destined to become a classic in occult literature & worthy companion to Starhawk's Spiral Dance & Janet & Stewart Ferrar's The Witches Way.
"This book summons beautifully the evocative, mythic processes which are at the very heart of witchcraft. The Way of the Goddess is a masterwork in the tradition of practical magic."--Nevill Drury... Author of The Occult Experience & Vision Quest ... Read more

Product Description
While most people are familiar with the classic image of a witch as a frightening figure riding through the night sky on a broomstick, true witchcraft is something very different. "Witches and Wiccans" explores witches and witchcraft throughout the ages, in both folklore and history. It discusses what people have believed about witches in different time periods, witchcraft practices from different cultures around the world, and how societies have perceived those called witches. With this look at the modern Wicca practices, the principles of Wicca, and how they differ from the witches of legend, readers will gain a better understanding of what modern-day practitioners do to commune with the unseen forces. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise! Finally, a Book Full of Substance & Truth!
Belladonna produced a gem. This easy read gem is so clear and gifted with guidance that anyone, regardless of prior experience in practice WILL immediately begin to see results, feel results and find "knowing" that they are both reading about, and doing practices that are being giving from a person who is not re-hashing non-working garbage, but is, instead, coming from experience gained from the doing of the same.

I state that the solitary practitioner who has never participated in Coven teachings will greatly benefit from these practices. I also dare to suggest that old cronies like me, whether formally or informally trained, will gleam usefulness from these pages, so much so, that the price of this book is way too cheap given the benefits realized.

If ever you wish to read a book about Wicca, Witchcraft, Paganism or Spirituality this really should be the one you read: first, now...sometime. Read the book. You will be healed, empowered, taught truths and set straight on the Path that is personally yours'. She does not force her Path onto you, but instead puts the reader through a series of practices (never once was I bored "doing" this book) that rebuilds the Aura, cleanses and spins those Chakras, empowers, enlightens, etc., etc.!!!

A once in a decade gem!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the asking price
Frankly, the information contained in this book isn't anything you couldn't learn in any general psychology, self-help or beginner's pagan book, and likely for less money.

That isn't even considering that the author's grammar is utterly atrocious.Really, her editor should be fired for not curbing her excessive love of commas & apostrophes.If you're at all OCD about grammar, this book will be your equivalent of fingernails run over a chalkboard.

Truly, this book is -barely- a step above those basics by Silver RavenWolf.

While this book does contain some worthwhile information - it's simply MY humble opinion that it doesn't contain $32 worth.Spend your money elsewhere; in the future, now that I am wiser, I shall do the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars unknown critics, not worth their salt
I have to agree with the smart people who responded here, and say that since I read Bella's book Awakening Spirit I use it everyday, so much that I don't need my other books. The meditation CD included with this book opened many doorways in my mundane and magical realities. AND for those of you who know me, as you can see I put my name down unlike some critics who spit and run, you understand exactly what I'm saying

5-0 out of 5 stars Kelly Turner
I found this book to be an eye opener. The title of this book is perfect..I havent ever experienced a book that took me on a journey such as this one. I have read it 5 times and keep it with me, no matter where I am. The insight that this book allowed me..gave new meaning and direction to my life. I look forward to her next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It couldnt have been more in my face!
I couldnt have been more blind to the world around me, or more ready for my eyes to be cleared. I didnt know exactly what I wanted out of religion, but when I finally got through my trials of the Chakra course, and got to the rituals in the back, I realized that there was an outlet for the way I felt I should Worship. But even without the rituals in the back, it would have taken me WAAAYYY longer to find a way to manifest my reality. Ive quit my crappy job and am now happily employed by myself, making enough money to live at a lake. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vengeance is essentially petty!
I would like to address the blatantly inaccurate assault on this title by Artemesia.
trans·gen·dered (trāns-jěn'dərd, trānz-)Adj.
Appearing as, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member of the opposite sex.
Of or relating to a transgendered person or transgendered people.

trans·sex·u·al /trænsˈsɛkʃuəl/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[trans-sek-shoo-uhl] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
-noun 1. a person having a strong desire to assume the physical characteristics and gender role of the opposite sex.
2. a person who has undergone hormone treatment and surgery to attain the physical characteristics of the opposite sex.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When someone attempts to demean the hard work and over two decades of practice and experience, because they take personal offense to the truth, it is an insult not only to their personal character, but in this case, to the purpose and intent of this title. As defined by the aforementioned entries, Ms.Barrett is essentially correct in her description of transsexual persons. If they are women today, after the procedure, they were formerly men. That are now appearing as women through the advent of surgery and hormones. Hormones they shall be taking for the rest of their natural life in order to maintain the appearance of a female person.
To imagine this book, because of that true description of the processes involved in the transformation of a man into a woman, is invalid is absurd and indicative of someone that is bitter for their own personal reasons and have decided to especially indict this authoress with bias, as an outlet for that angst.
This book is a valuable tool for ANY woman that wishes to practice the art and lifestyle of Dianic Wicca! Period! This book is not intended as a Bible. It is not intended as holy writ to be taken as absolute, when Ms.Barrett exercises her RIGHT to an opinion about Transsexual persons. Rather, it is a tool, a guide, bound wisdom gleaned from decades of experience in the craft. And it is intended to be used as a guide to making one's own path, their own rites and rituals, dedicated to what they personally understand and define, live, as a Dianic Wiccan woman!
If one can not get past personal commentary in a book that articulates this much information on the practice of Dianic Witchcraft, they have no business believing they are ready or capable of wielding the powers alive in magic and ritual. Because it's all personal , it's all innate and all books of shadows are diaries and advice, not dogma and absolutes!
This book is a boon for any Dianic witches personal occult library. And if one is a new practitioner of the Dianic way, this book is the best book one can hope to begin their studies with. But know this, the book of power in any magical practice is inside you. These titles but call to that deeper wisdom, that deeper knowledge, that affinity for the powers of creation some call Goddess!
As the wisdom says: If you do not find what you seek within, you shall never find it without.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Transfeminist or Transwiccan
Unfortunately this otherwise excellent book demeans itself by covertly attacking transsexual women. It is a valid point that ritual designed specifically for non-transgendered women (so-called "women-born-women") is not all suitable for transgendered women. And while there may be many reasons to want certain types of women's space to be reserved for non-transgendered women, Ms. Barrett specifically insults transsexual women by calling them men who have been altered by hormones and surgery, descriptions which are essentialist, biologically determinist and frankly inaccurate. It doesn't behove a wise womyn who herself has been abused and discriminated against to turn and do the same to a group of women, transsexual women,who badly need the mentorship of non-transgendered women and who are most easily hurt by misinformation which already abounds.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Look at Dianic Wicca and Women's Mysteries Rituals
Ruth Barrett is one of the more recognizable leaders in the Dianic Wiccan Tradition that had its birth here in the United States, along with names like ZsuzannaBudapest and Shekhinah Mountainwater.Ruth Barrett actually learned from Z. Budapest, and was ordained a priestess by her in 1980.She took over Z's work and has been High Priestess to the Dianic community in Los Angeles ever since.
This book is an extension of the original work by Z. Budapest, adding to and expanding her work to be more inclusive of the rituals that have been added since Z's original work "The Holy Book of Women's Mysteries" published in 1980.The material is by Ruth Barrett and is intended to be used as a "guide and resource for individuals and groups, both beginners and experienced ritualists alike."
The book is not only a collection of rituals intended for and for use by woman-only groups, but it is also a complete outline of what ritual is, how to express it and what to expect from it.It covers just about every stage of a woman's life as taught by Z. Budapest and adds a few more as well.
The Dianic Wicca Tradition is female oriented Goddess worship.To use Ms. Barrett's own definition provided in the book "Dianic tradition is a Goddess- and female-centered, earth based, feminist denomination of the Wiccan religion which was revived and inspired by author and activist Zsuzsanna Budapest in the early 1970's.Dianic tradition is a vibrantly creative and evolving Woman's Mystery tradition, and is inclusive of all women."
The focus of the book is clear.This book explains how to approach the Woman's Mysteries through ritual intended to focus on and be performed by women in the Dianic Wiccan Tradition.
Having interviewed Z. Budapest a few years ago, and knowing her love for things theatrical I wandered through the book and its rituals and you could see Z's influence on the material.These rituals are expressive, while not being encumbering. They allow for personal exploration or group participation.They are focused.Ms. Barrett takes the time to set up each ritual with full explanation of where you are going with this and what to expect."We do not all think alike, nor do we express ourselves in the same ways. "When applying ritual to groups she allows each woman to express herself in a way that she can relate.
You can see the years of experience that Ms. Barrett has being carefully laid out in this book and she passes along much of her wisdoms and experiences.She references other authors and material that she feels will help you to understand the experiences you are about to have and it gives new depths to the work.
The rituals covered can be grouped, as she explains, into "thematic categories:creation/manifestation, release/transition/transformation, honoring and celebration."She very expertly explains how ritual can combine elements of each of these categories.She covers how to set up everything from your sacred space to your altar.She covers the Goddess and the elements, invocation and revocation, tools, and the Dianic Wheel of the Year with all the celebrations and their meanings.Nothing seems to be lacking in her teachings of ritual and how to carry it out and follow it though.
The writing is very clear, the concepts are very understandable and the directions are concise and easy to follow.The rituals are adaptable for individual work or for group workings.Meditations are provided, as well as follow up for after the ritual, for personal reflection on what you did or did not achieve.
The reasons for the seasonal celebrations of the Wheel of the Year are explored and discussed in depth. The Woman's Mystery's are also discussed and covered in this book.To name a few: first blood, birthdays, weddings, celebrating sacred sexuality, conceiving a child, birthing and welcoming the child, or choosing not to have children and honoring this choice, and croning.They are not laid out as rituals so much as the ideas and reasons for having rituals to celebrate these rites of passage in your life.The idea is to incorporate these focuses into ritual as explained and learned in the first part of the book.
Also included is a discussion on ritual specifically for the Lesbian lifestyle.These ceremonies are based on the original works of Z. Budapest, who first published rituals for lesbian unions, or "Trysts" back in 1980.Ms. Barrett expands this to include a "coming out" ritual.
There are also healing rituals, as for someone who has been divorced or survived a sexual assault.
There are some very valuable chapters in this book, such as Every Ritual is a Teacher, which is self explanatory and can apply to anyone who wishes to perform any kind of ritual.Her chapter on The Priestess begins with the statement "The roll of the priestess awaits re-definition in the twenty-first century.Its keynote must be service, not power."For anyone considering the roll of priestess in their community, I feel this is a very good overview of the history of the priestess and their present and future roll in the Wiccan community.This is another chapter which can apply to anyone looking at their place as priestess in the Wiccan community.
While the focus of this book is the Dianic Wiccan tradition, and it is very feminist in flavor and focus, it also contains much information that can be applied by anyone looking at personal focus on being a woman and anyone who wishes to focus on the Goddess spirituality in their lives.Ms. Barretts discussion, insights and visions are clear and focused and this is a large handbook for anyone who is focusing on the Dianic Wiccan Tradition, and anyone who is looking for some very powerful insight into Woman's Rites and Mysteries in ritual.boudica
5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging and thought provoking
This is the most refreshing and challenging book I have ever read on paganism.Ruth Barrett takes ritual to a deeper level, focusing on celebrating, recognizing and honoring the aspects of women's lives that are so often glossed over in our culture.This book is much more thorough than your average wiccan book and requires the reader to participate on a much more active and personal level.Barrett helps you to see what you are missing in your spiritual practice, and gives you the mental tools to create truly meaningful ritual.Her book is written for women, but I think would be an eye opener for men as well.If you are looking for a completely new approach to designing your rituals, and you want to honor yourself and your life passages this is the book for you! ... Product Description
This is an accessible and practical guide to one of the fastest-growing spiritual paths in the West today. Wicca, the spiritual practice known as "witchcraft", is an ever-evolving blend of ancient tradition and modern experiential know-how. It celebrates the cycle of the seasons and the never-ending patterns of change that constitute our universe and our everyday experiences. An eminently practical spritual path, Wicca has a highly-developed tradition of magic and ritual, used to empower individuals and aid personal development. This book introduces readers to the underlying philosophy of Wicca, its cosmology and morality. The main emphasis in Wicca is on practice as belief, and accordingly the book includes many practical exercises, including spell-casting, blessing of sacred tools, conducting rituals and guided meditations. Wicca is a real-world spirituality and this text explains the practical application of its principles and practices in everyday life. ... Read more
1-0 out of 5 stars So Fluffy you could use it as a pillow
I have to admit that I only read the first chapter before giving up. The book starts on the terrible note of misquoting the Rede as 'Harm None'. And by page 17 the reader is expected to say a dedication, dedicating themselves to the Goddess and God for the rest of their lives, before even having a clear idea of What Wicca is.
All together a misleading book for beginners and far too shallow for even a moderatly experienced practitioner.
1-0 out of 5 stars nice pictures, but...
If you are Wiccan and are looking to read and learn more this is not your book. There is no depth of discussion in this book, nor is it a very complete accurate beginners book. If you are looking for seasonal crafts and activities this is not your book.There are some cool paintings and drawings, but there are also pictures that look so stereotypical with a barefoot long haired woman in dramatic ritual poses that it is hard to take seriously. I signed on to sell my copy, but there are already copies listed for 1 cent.That sort of says it all.
2-0 out of 5 stars I am new but...
even I knew evertthing in this book. It is very pretty with lots of big pictures but if you are looking for something with a little more meat to it, look elsewhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Im 15 been wiccan since I was 11. This is a amazing guide whether advanced or begginer. The author is great and explains everthing very well. Lot of good info . You wont be upset
4-0 out of 5 stars The Way of the Wicca
Her first chapter talks about the Earth Mother and the Horned god and the Wiccan Way in general.Gives a general idea on the dieties, histories, faith and belief. Finally she spends at least half a page talking about honoring the deities.Ending with Two rituals.
The next chapter goes into going about starting entering into the religion.She talks briefly about the basic tools.She then gives a ritual in how to concentrate them for magickal workings and concentrating your sacred space; slong with altar arrangment. The Final thing she talks about is casting a sacred circle, which should probably have gone after sacred space.
The third chapter is about the Magickal Calendar and the holidays in the faith.She talks about the greater sabbats briefly and the lesser sabbats even more briefly. The next thing she goes into is the moon and its cycles.Finally she goes more in detail on the four Greater Sabbats and then goes into Lunar Esabats.
In the next chapter she talks about Spiritual Development.She gives a ritual of three ways of advancement it only takes up one page.She also gives breathing techniques.She dedicates a page to correspondences and then gives another page as a table for it.She also talks about charms.She ends the chapter with telling you how to be of service to others and gives a ritual as well.
In the fifth chapter she talks about the Natural World and how to interact within it and use it. Then she goes into a ritual of exploring each of the four elements separately.When this is done she talks about the spirits of nature and how they are connected to the elements.After this is said and done she gives a ritual on communing with the spirits and the natural world.The final thing she talks about is the seasons and ends the chapter giving ritual and altar ideas for all four of them.
In her next chapter she goes into Divination. She spends at least one and probably a little less then half a page dealing with spell casting. She spends a page going into runes and gives a table on how to translate runes.She talks about the witch's ladder, which is the first time I have heard about it.The next thing she goes into is Candle Magick and she gives a table that takes up about half the page on how to use candles in magick.She then gets into the darker stuff but not by much and just tells us how to do a banishing and then gives us a banishing ritual.
The next to last chapter goes into journey you take within yourself.She talks about familiars and how to find one spiritually and physically.She spends time talking about Astral Travel about a page and not even a third of another one.She spends at least two pages talking about how to create your own spiritual journeys.
The final chapter is for rites and rituals for stages of your life.She gives a ritual for Magickal Naming, Child Blessing, Handfasting, Significants Occasions such as a coming of age, Croning, and finally Death Rites.
All in all I would say this is an okay book.Morningstar does not go into any warnings for dealing with love spells however.While the pictures are helpful they seem to take up more room then words and they seem to just be cushioning the book.This book would probably be more useful for someone looking for rituals more so then anything else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read
A wonderful, down-to-earth book about Wicca and everyday magic. Ms. Crowley (Ph.D.) is highly respected in neo-pagan circles and is one of the best Wiccan authors writing today. This book does a wonderful job of presenting magic in a practical manner that is accessible to anyone.
Highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Most Excellent
Well I just enjoy this book to no end. In fact I wish it would not end. I have a hard time putting it down. The writing is enjoyable and an easy read. If you are an advanced witch buy it for the fun and enjoyable read, a beginner? buy it for the same reasons.And it is full of gems. I find after reading a chapter here and there, I am still thinking about what I read throughout the day. Bookmarking things I want to go back and re-read for future reference. I love the cat healing story. I especially love when the author relates how to be careful who you tell things to. I have learned not everyone is so understanding and accepting. I have countless animal contacts, so to read about the cat healing, I loved it.
Thank you Ms Crowley!
5-0 out of 5 stars Magickal Living At Its Best
The Magickal Life is a delightful book filled with magical and fun ways to explore the path of self-improvement.
Ms. Crowley makes it clear that real magic(k) is not about the fluff, but the mind, and comes from within.It is something we all possess, yet must be tapped into and nourished, and you do this by going within and working on yourself (not by watching "Charmed" over and over).
She covers all the basics, including mediumship, energy, crystals, healing, intuition, divination, wands and casting circles.She also gives plenty of examples and exercises, and relates her own personal experiences. By the time you are done reading this book (and doing the exercises) you will easily be tapping into the more magickal part of yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I found this book to be a very easy read.Many of the subjects I have studied indepth before but this book hit the highlights and was a good refresher.I highly recomment.
4-0 out of 5 stars Everyday Magic
This charming book is a guide to using the powers of the human psyche as regards the deeper instinctive and intuitive nature. That is what Magic(k) really is - applying the powers of the human mind. In all esoteric traditions, this force is harnessed via the meditative state (where the conscious and the subconscious meet) and includes visualization, creating energy and directing that energy towards a goal.
Often relating her own experiences, the author explores mediumship, feng shui, crystals, the chakra system, the aura and spiritual healing. Each chapter ends with an exercise that includes affirmations relating to the subject. Crowley has a down-to-earth style and writes from a psychological perspective so her book is mercifully free of clichés or psychobabble.
She also deals with intuition, dreams, divination, tarot, wands, astrology and planetary magic, incenses and oils and cultivating a prosperity consciousness. As a Wiccan, the author explains the importance of the seasonal changes and the wiccan holy days, an interesting argument but not of particular importance to her overall message of self-development.
The book contains plenty of black and white illustrations, tables of correspondences, a bibliography and an index. Although I am not into paganism, I find this book full of common sense and sound psychology, and the author's style to be intelligent and inspiring. A book of wise advice for self-improvement that will help you put some magic into your life. ... Read more
2-0 out of 5 stars We Needed Bill Myers To Write These
The Ancient Forces Collection is the final book of the famed Forbidden Doors saga started by Bill Myers. In this collection, the three stories are:
The Ancients - Becka, Scott, their mom and Ryan head out to an Indian Reservation at the request of Z to help a young Indian with his faith in Jesus. They run into trouble with the local shaman who calls down lightning and Ryan begins to experiment with the local beliefs.
The Wiccan - The kids are told to meet with the latest superstar celeb and her new book all about Wicca.
The Cards - A fellow classmate of Scott's gets involved with Tarot cards when he tries to understand his future.
These last books aren't written by Bill Myers and you can tell. The storytelling is not up to his excellent par: we have the characters behaving unlike their normal "bill myers" style, the battles are uninspiring, and the stories themselves leave a lot to be desired.
The biggest letdown is that we never learn the identity of Z, the Internet personality who aids them in the spiritual warfare. We are left with the hint that Becka and Scott's father may actually still be alive.
How can they end a series like that?!!?
Product Description
This book offers an ethnographic study of the initiation ritual practiced by one coven of Witches located in Ohio. The participants are members of the religious community that describes itself as Wicca, the Old Religion, or the Craft. Within this community, initiation is seen both as the ceremony through which an individual becomes a member of the community and as a central transformative religious experience, expressed through performance and bodily praxis. In addition to contributing to our knowledge of this secretive religious movement, Nikki Bado-Fralick's analysis of the Wiccan initiation ceremony offers an important challenge to the commonly accepted anthropological model of "rites of passage." As a High Priestess within the coven as well as a scholar of religion, Bado-Fralick is in a unique position to contribute to our understanding of this ceremony and the tradition to which it belongs. Arguing the value of her dual role as scholar/participant, she also offers a thoughtful and perceptive self-analysis of the dilemmas this role involves. ... Read more
“Normal” is highly overrated. And as easy to lose as your balance…
A Rhiannon Godfrey story.
At long last, Rhiannon is starting to fit into the ninth grade. She and Jared are starting to flirt again, and school is fine except for the mandatory student community service hours. She’s even learned to bank her psychic powers.
For the most part.
Then there’s Dane, the intriguing, infuriating guy who’s her community service student supervisor. He’s got “angry teen” down to a science. Without even trying, he slips past her emotional shields, challenging her to be the one thing she’s most afraid of—herself.
For Rhee, that’s as scary as the ghost haunting the silo behind Doyle’s ice cream parlor. A ghost that’s somehow connected to the shadows in Dane’s eyes. All she really wants is, for once in her life, to be normal. But for a girl like her, “normal” isn’t just an impossible dream, it can be downright dangerous.
Especially if it means embracing her gifts—and opening her heart.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is far better than Gwen's first book, "SpellCraft for Teens."
It is practical, straight forward, and offers different opinions from real teen Witches. Plus there is nothing about this book that makes it gender specific, like there was with "SpellCraft".
Congradulations to Gwen on this wonderful book. I recommend it to anyone who either is a teen practitioner of Wicca, or is wanting a good book about Wicca to hand to their child or teen student.
5-0 out of 5 stars Old for it's "Age"
Despite it's title, Gwinevere Rain's masterpiece "Confessions of a Teenage Witch: Celebrating the Wiccan Life, is meant for teenagers and beyond.I was eighteen when I first discovered this book nestled in the corner of my college bookstore for a dollar.It would soon become my favorite book on Wicca.
After practicing Wicca for almost three years, I have read many various books on the craft.Not one book has ever inspired me as much as Rain's.I have read it many times--(it is worn now from flipping through it almost daily).I also use it as a reference in my college Pagan group.As Rain explains in the beginning--this book goes beyond the basics and beginner level.If you want to read a book that teachers you how to truly live the Wiccan Life, this is it.It goes beyond outlining rituals and beliefs--like many other Wiccan books.Confessions teaches you how Wicca is a passion.
I think one of the greatest parts of this book is that Rain does not just give you rituals to copy down and use.She outlines and guides you into the creation of your own circles and Full Moon rituals.She offers activity suggestions for Sabbats, and has a libraries worth of Magickal Correspondences nestled in Confession's pages.
I highly recommend this book to both young and old.It will give you passion and will be a guide to creating your own practice, as opposed to giving you a practice to copy. This is my favorite book on Wicca, and everyone--everyone should read it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Confessions of a Teenage Witch
Many teens are confused when they enter the Craft because there are so many books. They wonder which book is best and what authors can be trusted. In "Confessions of a Teenage Witch", author Gwinevere Rain proves she is a true Witch and authority on the theory and practice of modern Witchcraft.
The book begins with with a number of beginner questions dealing with what Witches believe and what they practice. The the reader is then emersed into the magickal world of Witchcraft as Rain discusses Wiccan ethics, deities, rituals, celebrations, and tools. The text concludes with an indepth guide to crafting and preforming one's own spells.
"Confessions" is different from many other Teen Witchcraft books because it is deey personal. Rain includes excerpts from her own Book of Shadows, or magickal journal, exhibting her own Wiccan journey. What's more, Rain includes thoughts from teen Witches around the world on various Wiccan topics.
Gwinevere Rain takes your hand and guides the reader through what it means to practice Wicca and truly live the magickal life. From creating your own spells, to celebrating the Full Moon, to decorating and celebrating the Sabbats (Wiccan holidays), to connecting to the Wiccan God and Goddess, Ms. Rain creates a thorough guide for teens seeking to learn about and practice the Craft of the Wise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sage Wisdom for All Ages and All Genders - Kudos!
I originally purchased this book for my children.It did not take long before I realized that Gwinevere Rain would become a favorite author.
I am 41 years old and there are no words to describe my spiritual path other than I find Divinity everywhere.I like to keep an look out for spiritual books that may be of interest to my kids and that I can recommend...which means I always read books I think may be of interest.
I am amazed at the depth of caring and life understanding by Ms. Rain and the many young people from around the world who made contributions to this book.
If only such information and inspiration was available when I was a teenager.Mr. Rain brings the magick of true feeling and contribution to life.
Many on this path are very independent with amazing experiences.When you practice a magical tradition of any path you reach "knowing" and unlike the rest of the world most of which are searching and relying on faith and belief.A certain arrogance can sometimes set in.
"Kids" are the future and many young people are searching and many of traditional religions are scared and contextualize WICCA or neo-paganism in it's many forms as a "war" against them.Many born and raised into fear based command and control belief systems are waking up and often are lead by their children to no longer be afraid; to seek and explore a path of healing and inspiration.
Ms. Rain gives good advice to young people about important topics that they may experience and need to prepare for, advice that applies to anyone and everyone.
I am reminded that young people are amazing and many who are "young" today also have come here with great wisdom; they are teachers, healers and just simply amazing.
5 Stars, highly recommended for ALL ages and genders.I look forward to reading her other books, as well as future works that will reflect an amazing life unfolding.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Teen Wicca Book
I've read the last two books this young lady has put out.You could tell they were leading into something.With this book, Ms. Rain does a fine job at achieving what the previous books were leading up to:a well written and produced teaching book about Teenage Wiccan Practices by a Teenage Wiccan.
Where her previous two books were samplings of her life so far as a Wiccan and a teen, this book puts it all together and blends a nice writing style with a well fashioned book and some handsome graphics.
The book is suitable for the teen starting their path in Wicca.I feel Ms. Rain has achieved what some of the other older writers have failed to do in previous attempts to write for the teen market - write on a level that teens of today will understand and relate to.Ms. Rain has worked out a very satisfying handbook on the Wicca Craft that explains details and goes into depth on many topics.
This is a beginner's book.All the material here is basic Wicca practices.The difference is that Ms. Rain spells it out for you.She goes in depth, working through the various practices, holidays, beliefs and workings of what it is to be Wiccan.Additional excerpts from her personal growth diary (her "Book of Shadows") allow us to observe a young lady growing in spirituality over her early teen years and maturing into a woman filled with her own inner strength and personal spiritual path.
She enlists the aid of several other young teens walking the Wiccan path as well.She introduces them to you, and adds their comments about how they feel in regards to the material being discussed.It is a lovely addition to the book, and it draws the reader in by suggesting that they too can reflect on this material and make decisions for themselves regarding their personal spiritual path.
Topics covered in this book include Wiccan Essentials, Goddess and God, Altar, Circle Casting, Sabbats, Full Moon, Spells and Magic.Each section has tips for doing these activities yourself, ponderings on the meanings of the material discussed, instructions for crafts and celebrations, actual prayers and spells and expanded basic practices.
These are all geared towards the teen practitioner; the student who yearns for something more from a Wicca handbook. This book goes into actual practices with the reasoning behind what we do, and discusses it on a teen level.This is not so much a book about Wicca, but more about who we are and how we practice.The level never leaves the learning stages, but expands the basics from how into why.
The book is peppered with some nice photos in black and white which enhance the material.They are nicely fitted into the discussion, like a picture of hand labeled oil bottles in the essential oils section.Ms. Rain and her mother composed and produced these shots with material that are part of Ms. Rain's practice, and they are a nice compliment to the material presented.
For the teen looking for a book that approaches Wicca on their level and gives more to work with than just correspondence tables and Goddess/God charts, this may be just the book you are looking for to progress further with your studies.This is a very nice book and one Ms. Rain should be proud of.boudica ... Trish helps you answer the first-do you want to practice alone or with a coven? There is no "right" or "wrong" decision here, and this section explores the pros and cons of both paths.The second question is answered in the more extensive second section of the book: Which Wiccan or Pagan tradition (if any) is for you? Which Witch Is Which? gives you the detailed background of the most popular traditions and the help you need to choose among them.There are hundreds of "101" books to help neophytes learn elementary spells and practices and rituals, but few titles that explore the specific focal points that strongly influence a person's spiritual path choices and subsequent experiences. 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Witchie Book
Summary:
This book helps bring a lot of different paths into one place so you can get a preview of what is out there. It also makes you question if a coven is something you really want. What is great about this particular overview book is that it gives you the general ideas behind the different paths from people actually on those paths and also references so that you can continue to seek out information on your own.
What I happened to really adore about this book is that it isn't a traditional 101 book that puts spells in the hands of people who have no real idea what a spell is or what it can do. This one makes a person really look at what they believe not so they can have a label but more so they can continue to learn. The overviews in this give the history, current events, beliefs, and even some about the practices for the different paths. The only thing I didn't like about this book is that I would have loved more information but because it gives resources you can look it up yourself. This book is also invaluable because you get to hear about these paths from the horses mouth, these people live these paths and so the writing is really genuine.
Honestly, this book is great for anyone truly interested in witchcraft, paganism, or wicca because it shows you just how different we all are from each other and well as our similarities. If you are going to read this book be prepared to have a notebook and pencil ready because you will end up taking notes. I know mine were a couple of pages long just on resources alone.
This book gets a five because it truly makes you think about where you are on your path rather than say here is a spell, and instant-witch you will be. Witchhood is work not something you can stare down your nose at and dabble in. I hope to see more books like this in the future (personally, I am sick of the 101 books).
5-0 out of 5 stars Which Witch is Which
This book is an excellent resource when researching the wiccan/neopagan path.It describes many different traditions and gives a brief history of each. It also has contact information and further reading resource lists. Highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Introduction
It's probably impossible to create a guide to each and every single NeoPagan path and tradition, but Telesco certainly make a worthy effort.
In Part One, Telesco looks at the pros and cons of both solitary and group practice and offers advice on finding a group and even changing paths. Part Two makes up the bulk of the book. This section is set up alphabetically, by the name of the given tradition, and includes most of the well known Wiccan traditions such Gardnerian, Alexandrian, 1734, Seax-Wica, Dianic, and Georgian. Large organizations and churches such as ADF, Church of All Worlds, Circle, CUUPS, and Correllian Nativist are also represented. Spiritual paths like Appalachian Folk Magic, Kitchen Witchcraft, and Discordianism are featured as well. But the real treasure in this book is found in the traditions you've probably never heard of, traditions like Cybeline, Minoan, Mohsian, and Ophidian.
The biggest problem with this book is that it's mostly about Wiccan spirituality. While Druidry gets some attention too, Reconstruction groups are clumped together under Asatru, Celtic Recon, Heathen, and Hellenism, as if all Celtic Reconstruction, for example, were the same.
Telesco gives us a buffet, of sorts. This is a fine reference book, especially for those primarily interested in Wicca, but it's just the tip of the iceberg.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is AMAZING!
Being new to the Neo-Pagan and New Age types of religion, I had simply been wandering around the metaphysial section of my local Border's when I came across this book.I knew at that time of no general books for someone not knowing exactly what religion to pursue, so I wanted information on the different denominations of Pagan and Wiccan religions.
I expressed an interest to a close and open-minded friend, who gladly bought it for me as a gift.I opened it when I got home and have never been the same.It gave a brief description of each religion, written by a member of that religion, and left many resources for those interested.It helped me narrow down the path I was to take, and helped me choose between solitary practice and joining a coven.
All in all this book is a splendid book for new and experienced pagans, as well as all religions as an informational resource.
Yours Always,
4-0 out of 5 stars A Wiccan Once-over
Considering her informed background, Bowes keeps this book pretty brief. It should be called "Wicca for Beginners," as she tries to cover everything briefly, from witch history (and persecution), to tools of the trade, to actual spell casting.
Like modern corporate-speak, it seems that Wicca is very muchmade up of self-empowering, visualization techniques that lead people on to develop their lives into what they desire. She points out that it is only useful to those who mean to use if for good, and I think corporate American ethics could learn something from that! As the original healers, it is sad that so many wiccans and others practicing the "healing arts" have been persecuted by men shamefully using Christianity as their means to acquire the power, fame, and fortune that could be derived from the church. Bowes does a good job of keeping this section brief, however.
Useful to me were her charts on various inanimate objects - such as candles, scents, colors - and their corresponding benefits, but she left her readers on their own with regard to stones, crystals, metals, etc. I find it confusing when she says that one day of the week is best for a certain ritual or spell, but later says to do it on a different day; she needs to explain how it got so complicated.
I would like to see her next book cover the last section - how to cast spells to make your dreams become reality - in more detail and with more clarity. But like I said, it's a pretty good introduction. ... Read more
