Most scholarship on American education involves metropolitan schools. The comparatively rare rural school research describes 19th- and early 20th-century rural school dynamics. But there remain thousands of rural American schools, ever pressured to consolidate because of declining economies and school resources, and lack of concern for the importance of small communities in national school reform policies. This qualitative study is organized around the socioeconomic history of a county with parallel chapters on the history of that locale's education, and on a particular school. Oral histories, interviews, county histories, newspaper accounts, and personal testimonies forcefully articulate the factors involved in the emergence, decline, and demise of a rural West Virginia high school between 1920 and 1990. more harmful than helpful
This book is helpful because it contains very general information about Cuba.However, the manner in which the info is presented is questionable since the author's sensitivity about world cultures is limited.The author's perception about Cuban culture, and more specifically subjects like Santeria, seem more indoctrinating to the debilitating effects that stereotypes produce.On page 71, the author writes, "Santeria appeals to many people because it does not have the strict moral sanctions that Catholicism does".
If we are to appreciate and understand a foreign culture like Santeria (from an American perspective), we should judge it on its own terms and not on the borrowings of another culture.
Strict moral sanctions manifest itself in very different ways in Santeria.This and other aspects about Cuba have arisen from a different historical experience, something that the author is highly unaware of.
On Cuba and related subjects, I recommend that people interested in such subjects look elsewhere. ... Read more

"John Denver's Take Me Home, Country Roads" is an illustrated version of Denver's popular song.

"I like this song! {sings}`Country roads, take me home to the place, I belong.West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home...'The pictures in the book were really cool. They look different than other books that we read.There are a lot of things in them too!My favorite picture was the one with the train."
