This is the first book-length study of Welsh syntax in English using minimalist theory. The central empirical issue addressed is an analysis of word order and clause structure in Welsh, within the context of the Principles and Parameters theory and Welsh as a VSO language. Roberts's central question: Which values of which parameters of Universal Grammar determine VSO order? To answer it, he makes use of parameters whose values are rooted in considerations of typology and language acquisition. Along the way, he shows that Chomsky's recent conception of the Extended Projection Principle is highly relevant, although it requires a slightly more abstract formulation.

Okay, but keep up with the vocabulary because....
...because the glossary (unless it's been updated) does not include all the words used in the exercises--especially if the words were first introduced in the chapter titles or grammatical examples rather than in the translation exercises. A related problem is that some words are presented in the glossary only as part of a phrase; you then have to guess where to find them. Welsh is tricky enough to learn, given that the first letters of words change depending on the previous word; it's therefore normal to need to guess which letter to find them under. By not including in the glossary all the words presented in the text, and by including several of them only as parts of phrases, the authors create even more confusion for their students.

As for the lessons themselves, they're okay, and you can do most of the exercises in each chapter without the audiotape. Still, there are some important differences between Welsh and English grammar (e.g., the different ways of forming present tense statements), and it would be very helpful if the authors were more explicit about the technical problems that arise for new learners.

The book might be most useful as a review course for students (like myself) who already have some background in the language. ... Read more

More than just a Dictionary
The Teach Yourself Welssh Dictionary is the perfect addition to the Teach Yourself Welsh course! It has a very helpful grammar section and pronunciation section in the back that is more useful than you'd imagine!

This has been very helpful in the Welsh class I have been taking.It's quite easy to read and understand.I wish it had a pronounciation guide, however.A handy book to have around.

Teach Yourself Welsh Dictionary
This dictionary's bragging rights are noted in the Foreward. As a works-in-progress it was awarded First Prize at the 1989 Llanrwst National Eisteddfod. Completion of the text was commisioned by the Eisteddfod Council. Quite an honor.

But any dictionary's true value is determined by the ability to serve the user's needs and the amount of effort required to obtain information from the text. What does this dictionary have to offer?

It is well laid out using a format easy on the eye. There are two columns per page with the subject word in bold type. Translations are kept short but each entry contains several variations of meaning to consider when needed.

Mutations are a building block of the Welsh language and common mutations are presented with an easy to understand code that quickly directs the user to the non-mutated word.

An interesting feature is the placement of the Welsh alphabet across the top of each page. This is a helpful reminder when attempting to find a word starting with the letter "k", for example, which is not part of the Welsh alphabet.

This dictionary is meant for the translation of the writen word but the usual guidelines to pronounciation and parts of speech are offered in seperate sections at the rear of the book. North/South Wales dialect differences are noted as are those ofSouth West Wales (i.e. Swansea area).

Coverage is limited to common everyday speech and not modern business, military, and science terms. There are other Welsh-English dictionaries on the market that better serve interests in those areas.

"Field Test" of the reviewed product:

My current need for a Welsh-English dictionary is to translate Welsh words used as band names and song titles found on "modern" Welsh folk music CD's. Using the "Rough Guide to the Music of Wales" CD as a test subject I had a sucess rate of about 75% after a half hour of research.

Very well written, careful analysis of Orwell's theory
Aside from the astute observations Reznikov draws from Orwell's writings to tease out the theory of language that follows perhaps what is most astounding is that this wonderfully well-written book is authored by a person whose native language is not English.I came to this book convinced that Orwell had a theory so Reznikov's task with me, at least, was less daunting.With others, I suspect, his work may be less convincing.Nevertheless I am genuinely impressed with the scholarship that supports this book even if the subject is a well-worn topic.In his case, Reznikov sheds light onto an aspect of Orwell's writing that few of us have thought about before, and for this reason alone I submit that those truly interested in the corruption of language will be most interested in this book.Thank you.

Well Researched
Andrei Reznikov has developed a truly original piece of research in this book.He has addressed a body of work that has been discussed and criticized in many publications over the years and explores a vein never before ventured.Reznikov asserts that Orwell has developed a bona fide theory of language, even if it does not employ the usual method of publication.The title itself asserts Orwell's work as a linguistic theory.According to some linguistic scholars mentioned in the introduction to Reznikov's book, 1984 contains no such thing.

"George Orwell's Theory of Language" takes bits and pieces of Orwell's published works that deal with language and presents them in a logical order to form a framework for the proposed theory.Orwell postulates from his experience with language, that because of dictatorship, the languages of Nazi German, Soviet Russian and Fascist Italian have deteriorated.In a well-illustrated chapter, Reznikov tests this hypothesis against two of the three languages mentioned, as well as modern English.The results are very interesting and at times disturbing.Reznikov presents examples that show how American political speech exhibits aspects of Newspeak.It is amazing to see how easy it is for politicians to use language as a means of controlling the public.

The representation of Orwell's views on language may be a bit confusing and may be hard to follow.I found that going back and rereading the appendix to 1984 concerning the principles of Newspeak helps relate this portion of the book to the main point. This book speaks to a reader who is familiar with the writings of George Orwell.

Any person who has respect for George Orwell as the crafter of 1984 will find it has an added sense of depth after reading Reznikov's book.When one reads 1984, one cannot help but recognize a strong undertone of significance on a passionate level.Reznikov recognizes in it significance on a critical level.The book gives the reader a new perspective on Orwell's work, one that presents a researcher with another tool to aid in the study of linguistics.Any further study concerning Newspeak or the language in 1984 would have to recognize Reznikov's recent publication.

Fascinating, but badly titled
Had Reznikov called this book something more like "Behind Orwell's Newspeak: the Societal Truth of 1984," he would have sold more copy and been more accurate.

This book reads like a short masters' thesis on a fascinating, but very narrow subject. ... Between the lines lies Reznikov's well-deserved worship of the man who foresaw (at least in lingual terms) the rise and fall of the Third Reich and the Soviet Union. Also, Reznikov suggests (again, between the lines) that, just as Tolkien originally conceived Middle Earth in order to create a separate reality where characters could speak Elvish, Orwell's greatest fictional work, 1984, probably grew out of his desire to display his theoretical language, Newspeak.

This book is a must for those who love Orwell and 1984; it will help you to understand both better. The book is dry in subject, and a bit repetitive, but wet in enthusiasm. Reznikov enjoys his concept and may well have a future in literary non-fiction beyond Orwell. ... Read more
