Product Description
Provides everything you need to know to install and configure HomeSite 4, simplify Web page development, and debugging applications with Studio's interactive remote debugger in 24 sessions of one hour or less.Softcover.Amazon.com Review
Allaire's Web page design program, HomeSite, takes thetime and trouble out of building a site by sidestepping the process oflearning HTML. In Sams Teach Yourself HomeSite 4 in 24 Hours, author Ben Forta gives you a crash course on creating and thenassembling the numerous components of your Web site using thispowerful online document authoring tool.

HomeSitedistinguishes itself from other Web authoring tools because itprovides the user with a "What You See Is What You Need" (WYSIWYN)interface rather than the more common "What You See Is What You Get"flavor of designing. Forta ably shows you how to construct many of therudimentary pieces of your site such as text, links, images, andtables. To teach you how to manage your pages, the book discusses anddemonstrates HomeSite's Tag tools as well as its support ofdynamic HTML (DHMTL), JavaScript, Synchronized Multimedia IntegrationLanguage (SMIL), and cascading style sheets.

While the book caterswell to new users by providing step-by-step guidance through thesoftware's composition tools, experienced Web designers working onlarger scales should find the text dedicated to HomeSite'sproject management capabilities extremely helpful. The accompanyingCD-ROM includes all of the code samples used in the book as well as acopy of HomeSite version 4. --Ryan Kuykendall ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful of the title!
When I bought HomsSite, I was having some trouble understanding part of the program so I went looking for a book and found Forta's. When I got the copy, I went to the section where I was trying to solve the problem. (It had to do with the icons in the Resource window.) I got more confused because what Forta was telling me to do didn't match with the program.

After tearing out my hair for awhile, I found the problem: I had HomeSite 4.5 and Forta was writing about 4.0 and his book didn't show the changes, including exactly what I was trying to solve.

In short, I had wasted my money.

So be careful of the 4 in that title. If you are using 4.5, you might be in trouble. There is that much change between the two.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really folks, how many books do you need?
I'm rating this book 5 stars because it does what it sets out to do. Plain and simple.

People who can't seem to find help with this book are those that can't learn unless they are in a curricular environment with its instructors.

Before purchasing HS 4.5 and this book ... , I had tried the trial version of the program from Allaire's web site. Granted I fell in love with the program and as DIY'ers do, I found my way around. But there were still questions I had so I bought this book. It pretty much answered any nagging questions that remained.

You know? There will ALWAYS be questions that you can never seem to get answered. That is life and you deal with it. I read one review of someone that said they bought this book hoping to find out why HS4.5 copies your html files and creates a clone file with the prefix of hs~(filename).html. This book didn't answer their questions so they slammed the book. I STILL don't know why HS4.5 does this but WHO CARES? It doesn't affect my sites. I don't have to upload them.

In a nutshell, if the manuals and online help that ship with HS4.5 aren't enough, buy this book. You'll need it and refer to it often. This book, HTML 4.0 Quickstart Guide, and a passion to learn more, and apply lots, are all you need to build sites with Homesite 4.5.

Quit running around looking for the RIGHT book.

Build some... sites.

3-0 out of 5 stars My First HomeSite Book
I borrowed this book from the local library. Actually I was looking for the HomeSite 4.5 for the dummies, but had to settle for this one since I couldn't find it. The book says teach yourself in 24 hours and I think it really meant it. I managed to digest most of them in a few days working to about 24 hours in all. It's a very simple book to teach you the fundamentals on HomeSite. I found it to be too brief in some of the topics. Just teach you the most basic stuff. It could be better if the book could give more examples. In summary, this is a good book if you just want to know how do get started. You will still need another book on HTML to do the more advanced stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Savings of Time and Effort
I have been a self-taught user of HomeSite for quite awhile now.Iattended a HomeSite class but it was just too basic.I wanted to beef upmy html pages with Image Maps and create forms which allowed for multipleselections.

I searched the web for the information but wound up goingback to the HomeSite book.It was quite easy to find the answers I waslooking for.

There are a few things that bother me about HomeSite suchas, if I create an html file and save it into the directory, the filedoesn't show immediately.Instead of looking for an answer in the book tothat question, I figure it is something I would need to take up withAllaire Technical Support - the owners of HomeSite.

But, overall, thebook has been a great savings of my time and effort and I'm pleased to haveit in my library!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, even though I have version 4.5
Vety information, easy to read, and full of useful information. Lots of basics, and excellent tips and suggestions. I learned lots about the Web and HTML (even though I knew both already) while learning HomeSite with this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies
If you have never used Dreamwaever before or had minimal exposure, this book will frustrate the heck out of you. I found myself constantly thinking that I had 'missed a page' somewhere because the book was not making sense. I'm only on Day 4 and am already looking for a new book. This book is not written well and is hard to follow. So for a newbie such as myself I do not need the frustration of trying to figure out the program and the book that's suppose to make the program easier.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not pleased so far
I have found using this book to be a frustrating experience. The author's approach, while friendly, is frequently unclear. I can't help but feel that this book was edited by already-proficient computer users, not by those who are new to computers. Illustrations scattered throughout the book often serve to further obscure, rather than clarify, the author's meaning. I had little trouble with another book in the Sams series - Teach Yourself CorelDraw 8 - so I am surprised that this one seems so hard to use.
I know that the author has also written the book for DreamweaverMX 2004. One hopes that she has gotten some of the "bugs" worked out of her most recent tutorial!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Dreamweaver MX
If you're looking for a book to get you started with Dreamweaver MX then buy this book.

I found the book worth the money. It's a quick, easy, enjoyable, and productive book. It's broken into small segments that can be easily read during the typical TV commercial breaks.

I found it quicker and easier to use than trying to go through the built-in Dreamweaver MX tutorial. Even though our Coldfusion MX server isn't ready, there is code and lessons learned that can even be used for Coldfusion 5 projects.

After successfully finishing this book, then venture out and tackle the more complex, harder to comprehend, technical offerings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a Tutorial at All
At the risk of echoing what others have said, this book is not a tutorial at all. It provides information on how to do basic things in Dreamweaver in a kind of haphazard way but provides none of the guided practices or exercises that would qualify it as a tutorial or "teach yourself" book. It is certainly not on par with Sams Teach Yourself Flash MX, a book that I would highly recommend. 90% of what's in this book, you could get from the Help that comes with Dreamweaver, and the Help is at least as intelligible as this book. For what this book offers, the reader would be better off with Que's Using Dreamweaver MX. If you want a "teach yourself" type book, look elsewhere.

2-0 out of 5 stars Keep lookin
As a new Dreamweaver user, I was not pleased with this book at all.The authors approach was unclear and not laid out thoughtfully. I had just gotten through the "Flash in 24 hours" and I was expecting the Dreameaver book to be just as good. Unfortunately ive realized that its not the series, but the author which makes a book great. Im currently half way through and Im now on-line searching for another Dreamweaver book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a good book that I bought to help me, but I never got to use it because my school had me buy the latest version of Dreamweaver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, lots of visual help in many directions.
I'd probably have given this book five stars if I'd have had time to go through all the steps reading and applying it cover to cover but I'm way too busy right now using three other web building tools.I review it as I can see it though and it's fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Breezy
Well planned and executed. For visual learners this book is a must. Also Mac Friendly!!++++

Buy it!

1-0 out of 5 stars It's the same book......!!!!!!
Maybe YOU ASK ME WHY JUST ONE STAR FOR THIS BOOK...!!!THIS IS FOR ME,BECAUSE I BOUGHT A BOOK CALLED TEACH YOURSELF VISUALLY HTML WHICH IT HAS THE MOST CHAPTERS OF THIS BOOK WITH SIMPLE DIFFRENTS.ACTUALLY I DIDN'T SEE BIG DIFFRENTS BETWEEN THIS 2 BOOKS,BUT THE BOOK IS VERY VERY GOOD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but not what I wanted...
This is certainly a visually beautiful book. And, for many people new to Dreamweaver, it might be exactly what they're looking for.Unfortunately, it's not what I am looking for. For example, there are beautiful illustrations of website home pages throughout the book. What I would have liked to have seen is how to create THOSE websites step-by-step.How do you create those attractive banners? How do you create those entire-page-backgrounds?What I want is a book that visually shows me beautiful websites, then shows me how to create them...from basic index.html page and interesting graphics incorporated onto the page, to linked pages, animations (flash) etc. This book just doesn't do it. ... Product Description
Teach Yourself Adobe LiveMotion in 24 Hours is an easy introduction to Adobe's exciting new graphics product that allows Web site designers to create fast-loading, vector-based animation while remaining in the familiar, integrated Adobe environment. The book was designed to serve as a Web designer's first introduction to LiveMotion, and to guide readers through the process of creating everything from simple animations to entire Web sites in LiveMotion. The book's author, Molly E. Holzschlag, has a unique perspective on LiveMotion. She has been watching the product's development since the earliest alpha stages, and with her extensive experience conducting her popular Web design and development training sessions, she knows exactly what kinds of techniques beginning users need to learn, and what types of questions they typically have about products like LiveMotion. Amazon.com Review
Adobe LiveMotion offers Web animators a tremendous number of features, so getting up the learning curve can be a challenge for a new user. Sams Teach Yourself Adobe LiveMotion in 24 Hours might not teach you everything about LiveMotion in a day, but it certainly will take you a ways up the slope.

Written with the beginning Web designer in mind, Part I focuses on introducing LiveMotion and its tool set while educating you on how Web graphics work. But, while the author appropriately details the differences between GIF, JPEG, and PNG graphic-image formats, LiveMotion is a tool for creating vector-based animation for the Web, and the chapter "Understanding Web Graphics" makes no mention of the Flash, QuickTime (which LiveMotion doesn't utilize), or even animated GIF formats.

Parts II (Working with LiveMotion Objects), III (Color, Shape, and Style), and IV (Creating Static and Dynamic Images for the Web) detail use of the application itself, and Parts V and VI wrap up the book with examples of animation and multimedia, and designing and optimizing advanced Web presentations.

Although LiveMotion is primarily an animator's tool, this book takes a different approach to it, looking at and using it as if it were a Web designer's tool. Interesting chapters about creating rollovers and using LiveMotion for page compositing illustrate this, as do 22 pages on setting type. Meanwhile, the whole section on creating animation in LiveMotion is just over 20 pages long.

An inexpensive book, Sams Teach Yourself Adobe LiveMotion in 24 Hours doesn't have an accompanying CD-ROM or any color illustrations, which makes chapter 10, "Getting Colorful," somewhat theoretical. The book as a whole reads more like a reference manual than a tutorial, but the detailed index will help you find what you need quickly.

For people who need to learn from structured tutorials, there are other books. For those who like to create things on their own and need only a reference book with examples, this one is a good choice. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars completly disapointing
The first half on this book is about the very basics of internet design concepts, the other half is a small introduction of LiveMotion, this book is for people with 0% knowledge on internet design. This was my only "throw away my money" purchase on amazon (I hope)

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic and a little Premature
I have used the SAMS Teach Yourself approach for several different subjects in web development. For the most part they are very good. I ordered this book before it was published and waited patiently for it to come. In the meanwhile i honed my Flash skills. I got the bok as soon as it was available last year, I am just sittng down with it now. After going through the first half, I feel this book could have used a little more editting and quality control. THere are references made to tools and settings that are not where the book says they are, as early on as the explanation of the settings! The book also assumes that you have covered areas early in the book when infact, they have never been addressed before. Like I said, this book is good for beginners, but be ready to do some searching of your own so you do not get lost.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine for beginners
This is a fine book, but REEEAAAALLLLLY for beginners.I mean, it explains some very basic things about the web, color, fonts, stuff like that.Things I already knew. But hey - not everyone knows this stuff yet - we all have to learn sometime! So if you feel like you are a total newbie, this is a very nice book.It makes no assumptions about what you know about Adobe products, internet applications - well, anything. You won't feel overwhelmed with a lot of complicated technical information with this book.

It's a good book, just mostly for beginners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Won't take you far
Holzschlag's book is a good introduction, but it won't take you far. If you're completely new to Adobe products and web design, this might be a good start, but you'll be needing to buy additional, better books within a few days if you don't want to stay at the surface of the program.

I bought the Sams guide, as well as Elain Wienmann's Visual Quickstart Guide for Live Motion and Adobe's Classroom in a Book for LM. The last two are better books than the Sam's guide. Adobe's Classroom is all tutorial, with CD-rom lessons that will teach you to do very sophisticated animations (such as count-down clocks) within a few days work. You will have to concentrate on the lessons, and perhaps do them more than once to fully understand them, but they're well worth it. The value of seeing on the CD the final animations you're trying to make is invaluable -- you can look at the Timeline code and see exactly how the animations were done, and then compare and fix your own efforts. If you can master all the tutorials in Classroom in a Book, you will be able to say that you really know LM.

The Visual Quickstart guide is very different -- it's a reference and tutorial in one. If you have questions about procedures in Adobe's Classroom tutorials, you can look up the answers in VQ. So my suggestion is if you have some knowledge of Adobe projects, just get Classroom in a book and VQ.If you're really new to this, you might want to buy the Sams book also as a start off, but don't think you can get away with just the Sams book

2-0 out of 5 stars Teach is not the right title
I have a few Sam's Teach Yourself books. Some I like and some are justdust collector, but this is the first time in a long time I could not waitto return a book.

I learn better when I see how others have used aprogram--the learn from the Master's feet kind of thing.Well Molly I mustsay that there was less teaching and more show and tell here.

This booktakes the User Guide you get with the program and adds several layers oftext to it. Book has already gone back so there will be no quotes--It waslike having a Calc teacher explaining how to add.Too much on what anelipse is and nothing for me to learn from--you know like homework.I needto do something to actually learn-like classroom in a book.My nextpurchase from the refund I am getting from this book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money, don't buy this book!
This book covers a wide range of topics but the author never explains his code. The book shows you how to wite a search engine program, the program is several pages long. But the author never explains his logic or how theprogram works.

2-0 out of 5 stars Focus on DHTML too MUCH !
This book talks lots of basic content about internet ! If you want to write internet applications , you should learn the use of DHTML and ASP, which I think is the most important. However, this book focuses on the useofDHTML within Visual Basic 6. I think it's better to reference otherbooks containing the use of WebClass within VB6 after you read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book provided all the info I wanted it to provide
The book provided the answers both as a tutorial and a reference book to get me up and on the right track with web classes, ASP etc.It giveseverything it says it will give and is easy to read considering the groundits covering.

Check out Wayne S. Freeze's hands on SQL Server 7 with VB6 book.It covers pretty well on ASP, WebClasses, and DHTML, Pluse excellent example of how to get SQL Server and VB together

1-0 out of 5 stars Yet another "VB6" ripoff!
Arrgh! When is an ethical author going to actually describe the very significant new Web-related features of VB6 rather than doing a sloppy and minimal update of VB5 info? This book and Carl Franklin's effort areabsolute ripoffs that do not deserve to be rewarded with your money! Instead, save it and reward the author(s) who will hopefully provide thefirst real publication that deals with DHTML, WebClasses, and the otherpieces that distinguish VB6 from it's past versions. Please!! ... Product Description
With hundreds of screenshots in full color, Teach Yourself Dreamweaver 3 VISUALLY™ is the fastest way to learn this powerful Web design package. The book leads you through the basics of building simple Web pages with text and images, then shows them how to use tables, forms and frames, as well as some of the program's more advanced features.Amazon.com Review
Experienced Dreamweaver users might think that this latest edition in the Teach Yourself Visually series is strictly for beginners. But, if there are any features that they've left unexplored, this would be a good place for them to begin. For example, if cascading style sheets seem daunting, the corresponding chapter here gets you up and running within minutes, while it simultaneously gives a solid background on how they work, and what their pros and cons are.

For novices, this book is a great first look at the application. Although there is text to read here (in the form of succinct captions and call outs), each page is a succession of illustrated panels, like a comic strip. Screen shots walk you step by step through Dreamweaver--from the basics (including the basics of HTML) to working with text and images to designing with tables, frames, and forms. Many of the illustrations try to explain concepts by using cartoons and visual metaphors. For example, padlocks mark noneditable regions on a template, paint cans fill table cells with individual background colors, and large hooks pull out the dimensions of a frame. Sidebars--for example, "Can I modify the appearance of my ordered lists?" or "Is there a shortcut for saving all the documents in my framed page?"--provide further insight on selected topics.

If there's any drawback to this visual approach to teaching Dreamweaver, perhaps it's the juvenile style of cartooning; a little moderation would have streamlined the occasionally cluttered visuals. On the other hand, the book does make using this sometimes complex application seem like child's play. It's highly recommended for beginners, especially those who learn best by imitation. For intermediates who still have gaps in their Dreamweaver knowledge, Teach Yourself Dreamweaver 3 Visually makes a good appetizer, to be followed by a main course of the more in-depth bible- or tutorial-style books. --Angelynn Grant

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory book!!
This is, in my opinion, the best introductory book for Dreamweaver 3 on the market! If you know nothing about the program, you will definitely have working knowledge after going through this book. It makes it so easy!! This book along with the Dreamweaver 3 Bible is all you need to master this program. If you already know it, just get Dreamweaver 3 Bible. If you don't know Dreamweaver at all, GET THIS BOOK!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book really delivers!
This book is extraordinarily effective. Without those long-winded discussions (and incessant distractions) that plagued most computer learning books, this one made learning Dreamweaver extremely easy. I've basically learned it in a 2 hour sitting (i do have a little bit of Basic HTML background though). Each lesson is visually very pleasing and very VERY easy to follow. If you would like to learn Dreamweaver by yourself, you should definitely check out this book first. Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginners book with all the basics!!
I HATE reading tech manuals or training manuals that are full of text and very few screen shots. I'm the type that if you just lay out the basics for me, then I can figure it all out from there. This book was EXCELLENT for just that and I'd recommend it to anyone starting out new. I read the book through in one day. By the end of the week-end I had created and uploaded the basic format for my web site. The visuals and step-by-step instructions make it very easy to get started. It is very basic, so if you are already fairly familiar with Dreamweaver this book would not benefit you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good beginners guide
The concept behind "Teach Yourself Visually..." is to illustrate rather than write out the lessons.Since most people learn visually the concept seems interesting. The best desription I can think of is a classroom in a book.If you were taking a class to teach you Dreamweaver 3 your instructor would more than likely show you screenshots to walk you through the lesson. That is what this book does, walk you through the lesson visually.

Unfortunately, the visual concept seems to be light on explanations, especially when there are exceptions. Also, in a classroom setting you have the luxury to ask an instructor any questions, you can't with this book.

This is a great book for the absolute Dreamweaver beginner.I would recommend you use this book in conjunction with the "Dreamweaver 3 Bible".This will get you up and running, while the DW3 Bible will help answer more complex questions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars So many errors it's unworkable
I purchased this book to start learning HTML. While there appears to be a lot of information here, I found so many errors and omissions that I gave up after 115 pages. I just couldn't follow the examples, and found the page layout to be too confusing. The index didn't help much either - often pointing to a term used only once in the book without any further explanation. I bought a different book (by Laura Lemay) and have had much more success with the Lemay book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Learning
Yes, it seems disjointed at times and has several spelling errors. However, for beginners like myself I have learnt that the best learning books for computer Newbies comprise of plenty of page graphics (close to 50% of content in this one) and practice exercises(end of every chapter !). Cottrell's book achieves both well enough. Most computer books do not, atleast for HTML learning that I have examined.Cottrell's book urges you to complete end of chapter questions with answers at the back for critical comprehension checking. It secondly includes a working case study exercise at theend of each chapter e.g, Chapter 4 p.67 on Tables- Shows a case study homepage and asks :'What are the design issues with this page ? How did the author create it ? Identify each table, and any special formatting you see in the table.(Hint: there are nested tables on this page.) When you're done, go to [specified website address] and view thesource code.'Gives her answer at the back of the book too.I would have liked to have seen MORE practice exercises... but this book has been great to check my understanding as a newbie. Nice work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fire the editor
This is one of the worst editing jobs I have ever seen in published material. There is sometimes no continuity, incomplete sentences, no follow on explanations; just a poorly written and poorly edited book. You can learn a little about HTML, but it's a lot of work

3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes a little confuzing
When the author explains something, eg. tables, she notes that it will be explained more in a named chapter, then she doesn't. I also found that she gives alot of incomplete information. All this might be because I expectedmore information. A plus is that she does explain some very useful conseptson desighn and compatability.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rough around the edges
This book can't seem to make up it's mind if it's a tutorial or a reference book, and in the end it does neither well. There are several cases where the text is talking about one thing and the images areillustrating something else. I have had to do to much of the workdeciphering the information that is presented. I'm looking for anotherbook. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too basic by far
Printed books are expensive to make, so it makes sense to use that investment wisely, something the publishers should have made Ms Holzschlag aware of.
Instead, the book wastes a good deal of the reader's (and owner's) time by going into excruciating detail on some of the most elementary aspects of using any program: how to move an object by dragging it; how to change its orientation by dragging it; how to change its size, by dragging a handle. This, and much of the first six (that is, a quarter of the book) chapters take the reader on a journey of boredom that could easily have been covered in less than one chapter. That this seems to be "padding" or stretching the length of a work by including unnecessary detail is all too aparent, and the book's lack of popularity is well-deserved.
I am so glad I got mine second-hand.
Things pick up marginally thereafter, but it isn't until halfway through the book that things get really interesting and useful, but by then, there's not much space left for the information.
Sams have produced some very good works over the years, but this isn't one of them.
By all means, obtain a copy to kick-start you through learning LiveMotion, but search the web and visit the user forums to obtain the fuel you'll need to complete the journey.

2-0 out of 5 stars Starts off good but.....
The book starts off in a concise manner and the author takes great care to make sure that the reader understands the basic concepts of LM2.However, the deeper that you get into the book the lessons start to fall apart. For example the "remote rollover" section does not work as scripted in the lesson.I also noticed in some of the other lessons (ie. CH 14. The Artist section) that although the lesson works, when you try it the code does not come out clean. The author does a good job with explaining basic animation principles but a terrible job with explaining the scripting. So if you understand scripting but can't get the animation aspects down then this might be a good book.Otherwise look around for something else. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not Great
I'm working through the book and I find that it seems to cover the important topics but I find following the text to be difficult.I've seen other instructional books that were much clearer. With this book, I have to read and reread to make sure I understand what the author is saying and with better instructional books I can continue to read without as many stops and starts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book is an outstanding way to get started with Ultradev
I have used this book, and performed the exercises, to learn Dreamweaver Ultradev.I found the book to be extremely helpful--far more so than the Dreamweaver Ultradev documentation which came with the product.IMO, the book is more useful if you already understand some of the concepts related to web development---you don't need to be an expert by any means.

I am now able to create web sites, and have a more full appreciation of the tool, because of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well... love it or hate, it's better than the others.
I found this book to be much better than the other available UltraDev books. As another reviewer said, however, there is just too much to cover, and, if done in a way that is all inclusive, it gets to be too much.

I'd like to see UltraDev support PHP, and a book similar to this one be written about PHP/MySQL and UltraDev, but, for now, this will do.

If you find this book too easy or too hard, just look at the rest of the available titles - ugh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look hard before you buy....
I looked at the table of contents and thought "Wow, EXACTLY what I need." Too bad it didn't turn out that way.

The problem that all UltraDev books face is that of platforms.
-What OS? PC or Mac (most go the PC route)
-What Server OS? (Too many to list)
-What Appliication language? (Asp/VBScript, Asp/JavaScript, JSP, Cold Fusion? you'll see more ASP than anything else.

Ray West and Tom Muck side stepped this issue by including examples of all 4 coding languages, and that pushed thier very good book close to the edge of being tiresome.

So the issue is that this book may work for you, but it might not.

Take a good long look at this book before you buy it. If it is a good fit for you, then go for it. If not, pass and go to the next one.

Until we get UD books on demand, you have to do the leg work or the work arounds to get books that are close to work for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but!
The book contains a lot of good Dreamweaver Ulta Dev (DWUD)information, but the author, in my opinion, places too much emphasis on databses, design, SQL, and normalization of tables. If you need a book with a good mix of DWUD, then this book may be for you.If you are looking for a book with examples and example code to go with it, this is not the book for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sams Teach Yourself Adobe(R) GoLive(R) 5 in 24 Hours
I've read several GoLove books to get a handle on the basics of this exceptional application. GoLive In 24 Hours is the best. It's easy to understand. Puts first things first. And gives one enough information to springboard into creating some pretty compelling web designs. I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars SAM'S Teach Yourself Adobe Go Live 5 in 24 Hours
This guide is excellent, easy to understand and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars sams golive is great
I like to review books and products. I find it interesting that webauthoring and many graphic self help books are mostly text based when they talk and instruct about visual based computer software like golive 5. Even when many books use illustrations, screen shots and graphics to demonstrate commands, features, parts of the program and how to use, their writings are many times confusing, counter intuitive or make the learning process more difficult . Not so for Sams Teach golive 5.

I was hunting for another tutorial llike book to learn more about golive 5 and redo my websites. I wanted a book with more visuals. I stumbled upon this one while considering several other books that had many screen shots and visuals.

The strengths of this book are the way the authors have written this book. Thy write it in the manner that many want to learn - how build websites- not how to use the features. There is a big difference.

The authors actually seem to read your mind as you go through the learning process. I knew many features etc so I was trying to check how well the authors wrote the tutorial type text. Their
tutorials are easy to understand yet comprehensive.

Illustrationsare to the point and are synchronized with the visual. While it is structured way of building and working with gl5 , it is very intuitively and flexibly written to tie in different ways to start, develop and produce with the program. In other books, many features are listed in several places in the index and are very hard to find. No so in this book. Most what you have to find is in one place. If there is more , you are directed within the text. No blind hunting is involved.

They usually come from different perspectives. For example, building web pages. They don't assume that there is only one way. You can create from new, modify others, import from servers, import from already made websites. They anticipate the many needs of the person reading the book.

One of the reasons I chose this book over some of the visual based books that have many more illustrations and screen shots is that they had extensive coverage how to use and insert quicktime video, graphics and more.

The book covers windows and mac versions by showing commands to use in the tutorials. At the end of each chapter, there are usually troubleshooting questions that answer some of the perplexing questions I found difficult to solve. Several times, when I had problems, the authors anticipated these with added explanations at the end of chapters. Some may find the little quizes at the end also helpful.

It does not come with a cd and is very reasonably priced compared to some of the other books which is another reason to buy it as a best buy.

I wish I had bought this book when I first bought golive. No matter what version of GL or operating system , I believe you will find this book will help you. Most novice and intermediate and even advanced users will find it very useful.

I am not sure about other books in this series , but these authors really know what they are talking about and have written the book to relay their ample knowledge. There are other GL books but I would recommend looking at this first.

5-0 out of 5 stars "THE" book to get for the beginner.
i have zero web exprerience but wanted a website. my friend was supposed to help but didn't so i got this book and "the adobe golive 5.0 visual quickstart guide" (see my other review). both books enabled me to overcome my fear of the web and get my site done in record time. although i rated both books 5 stars i'd have to say this is the best for the absolute beginner. its very well written and its tone makes the sometimes daunting task of web design fun. if i had to pick one book for a beginner it would be this one. you can see the proof at...if you don't believe me. the site successfully launched today and i owe my thanks to this book. you can actually do quite a lot in golive. if you want a page with just some text and basic links this book will have you up and running in day or two. my site was a bit more involved but only took about a week after finishing the content. this book sells at a great price for all you'll learn. you can even access a website by the authors for tutorials with downloadable images and stuff. believe the title and get it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Alas, it's out of date
I'm certain that, like all the books in this series, this was a fine book in its time. But its time is past. There is very little at all in this book that will help any user of the newer version of Moveable Type .

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficially Useless
If you're wanting to learn Movable Type, this book won't help. All this book tells you is how many other books you need to buy (CSS and HTML).

See, Movable Type is a combination of web-standards HTML and CSS combined with its own proprietary tab system. So, really, it brings THREE different programming languages together (which is what makes MT so powerful).Howver, this book doesn't cover any of them.

What this book does give is a simplistic look at the different areas of MT.However, it doesn't give you enough tools to actually USE MT.For example, one would think the layout of the site would, you know, warrant a significant portion of the book.In actuality, the layout is only covered in chapters 10 and 11 and only the basics: changing colors and adding an image to the banner. That's it.

Sure, there are other issues (such as installation, migration, syndication and publishing) covered in the book but with such a minor look at the fundamentals, this book is near useless.

To put it simply: YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROGRAM MOVABLE TYPE.

Look at Movable Type's manual, web forums, www.elise.com/mt, movalog.org and other CSS and HTML tutorials (learning CSS and HTML is CRITICAL!) for the real guide to Movable Type.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid MT Manual
Moveable Type (MT) is a blogging tool that I've been using on my site for several years. This is not a review of which software is the best, but on the book's usefulness in getting a person up to speed on MT. On that note, the authors do a first-rate job of helping the reader learn how to use MT.

As a person who is experienced in using MT, it provides me with a few tips and tricks I hadn't considered. Since I'm self-taught, I missed a few steps. Besides, there are many things you can do with MT especially when adding plug-ins.

For the person who has never touched a blog or MT in particular, the authors start at the beginning and keep things simple. Realistically, how do you write a book that meets the needs of the experienced while introducing the new users to the software? Experienced users will probably skip the first few chapters where it covers installation and setting up a blog. But the rest covering templates, plug-ins, managing archives, and adding features will more than provide enough to keep anyone busy.

Not only do the authors show how to use MT, but also they offer information on how to write and promote content. The book focuses on v2.x of MT. As I understand it, MT v3.0 doesn't have major changes and much (if not all) of the book is still valuable. You could wait around for a v3.x book, but by the time it comes out the software will have upgraded. Blogging tools upgrade very frequently and I use seldom use the word "very."

The MT online doc is one of the better blogging software documentation I've seen. The book offers accompanying pictures and additional information not found in the help doc. If you like getting all of your information in one place accompanied with visual aids, this is sure to please. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY--This book is proof that anybody can get a book published!
ERRORS and ERRORS!

My God, where were the technical editors??
These authors shouldn't write until they actually know what they are writing about. Evidently the publisher, IDG, doesn't care about the quality of the contents of the books it publishes. With that in mind, how can anybody trust that the content of their books is accurate? I doubt that I'll buy anymore of IDG's books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Error-ridden and unhelpful
I am a college graduate with a degree in Computer Information Systems.During my educational career, and my career in IT (which has spanned over 10 years), I have read many technical manuals and "how-to" guides. This book tries to be both, but does not accomplish either. The examples are full of syntactical and typographical errors and are very often incomplete. One of the key methods for learning is by doing, which you cannot when the examples provided are wrong to begin with.

The inclusion of the XML specification is not a bad thing. It helps to know the background behind the syntax. The problem is that this book presents the specification with the instruction as an afterthought, making learning through this guide all but impossible.I purchased the B&N technical series book on XML and walked away with a better understanding of the basics of the language.Even then this book proved to be impossible to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Perfectly Unstructured Writing
I bought this book a while ago and thought that I would read it at leisure but the way the authors dive into topics without presenting a rational explanation is simply absurd. Even the contrast between XML and HTML on page 6 is wonderfully blurry. The book appears structured but revels in throwing coding examples at you without a premise. I know and practice both XHTML and CSS but this book made XML seem like rocket science, which it is not. Please do not buy this book and waste your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrendous
I'm glad I only borrowed this book from the library.I haven't seen a more inept piece of instructional writing in my life.

To see how an educational book should be written, I strongly recommend _XML by Example_, 2nd Edition (ISBN: 0789725045).It's not a breeze but uses some common sense.

As for the fellow who is so presumptuous to assume that all 14 negative reviewers just "breezed through it like a harlequin romance,", I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.I'll assume either he's a.) mistaking this for another, similarly titled book, or b.) from another planet.Nanoo-nanoo.

1-0 out of 5 stars Glad it's not just me.
Like most of the other reviewers, this is the worst programming book I have ever seen.I bought it in a hurry; fortunately I was in India at the time, where books are cheap, and only lost 70 cents or so.I'm actually impressed that anyone has lasted long enough with this book to even *find* the errors and typos; for myself, the organization is so thoroughly awful that I realized within half an hour that this was junk.

Here's what's wrong with the organization: the correct way to teach a concept is to first show a simple implementation of it, then show a more complex implementation of it, et cetera. That's not what this book does. This book starts at the *beginning* of a very complex XML document, and torturously works its way towards the end.So, for example, DTDs are on page 26.EBFN notation is on page 38.JUST MAKING A &*@#ing LINK is on page 276.By the time you reach the end at page 442, you *may* in fact know how to create an XML document -- were it not for all the errors, and the fact that you will have chewed your own face off first.

I was going to sell this book for $.50 on Ebay, but after readingeverybody else's experiences, I've decided that it would be unethical to inflict this upon another person. So, it's off to the recycling bin! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
This is a fine introduction to programming for the Internetthe Microsoft way, using Active Server Pages (ASPs) and theWeb-development tool Visual InterDev 6. The author covers thefundamentals of creating dynamic, database-driven Web pages that canserve as the starting point for any commercial Web site. Earlysections look at the new Visual InterDev design environment, whichfeatures improved RAD (rapid application development)-toolfunctionality and database support. Lessons explore the basics ofcreating InterDev projects.

The author gives you background ondatabase objects using Microsoft's ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) and thedatabase tools in Visual InterDev. Then he discusses ASP programmingitself with basic server-side objects and additional databasesupport. Advanced topics include Dynamic HTML (DHTML) basics and howto exploit the power of scriptlets. Next are tutorials on real-worldissues of developing and maintaining Web sites with Visual InterDevand team development with Visual SourceSafe (a version-control packageused in Visual Studio 6 that also contains Visual InterDev).

Thishands-on tutorial highlights the considerable strengths of VisualInterDev 6 and makes a good case that anyone can learn to program withdatabases on the Web. This well-structured set of tutorials can showyou how to get on board with ASP development. --Richard Dragan ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dazed and confused
There's very little to recommend about this book. Most chapters are filled with superfluous verbiage and far fewer hands on exercises than I expected. Some of the chapters are redundant, as if the author forgot that he already covered this ground in an earlier chapter. There is no sensible progression to the book. Concepts and techniques seem to come out of left field with no explanation of the fundamentals of what's going on. You get some exposure to the VI interface and some familiarity with the construction of a site and programming elements, but a poor explanation of underlying concepts. I found bugs in some of the code samples, and few of the more advanced examples worked. Unfortunately, the chapter on debugging comes toward the end of the book. Don't bother with this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
Some sample codes don't match what the authors have written in the book. A lot of erros in the codes. For example, in Day 13, the Authors even wrote a VBScript code like 'Dim I as integer' which is supported in VB only, not in VBScript. I doubt if the authors really tested some of the codes.

This book does help me to learn VI6 but I don't feel it's a good book.

3-0 out of 5 stars great book to start with
If you want to get familiar with rapid web application development using microsoft visual interdev 6.0 - this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Hands-on book for VI beginners!
For VI beginners, this book is great. I bought this book as a developer who wants to get up to speed on web applications, and the book lived up to its title. Step by step examples are very easy to follow and sufficientexplanation is given about what is being accomplished. I have to agree withothers about some examples not working at all, but with some searching onMSDN and minor tweaking the examples worked. It actually helped me fullyunderstand the concepts.

From the third week of the book, only thelast chapter was useful for me (hands-on DHTML). But I actually deliveredmy simple database-driven web project (4 pages writing to 4 transactiontables and reading 3 lookup tables) by reading only this book! Keep in mindthat I was already conversant with OLEDB and ADO.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Time or Money
I've been using this book for three weeks, and find it a daily frustration.Code examples are generally absent. Key points for beginners are overlooked. And it's not like I'm a novice.I'm a self-taught MCSE, aMicrosoft Certified Trainer with more than 20 years of teaching experience, and have been able to teach myself Visual Basic and other languages, but amtearing my hair out trying to learn Visual Interdev 6 using this book.ACD with examples of all code in the book would have been a great help.

Here's a small example.Page 170 calls for you to add ActiveX comboboxes, text boxes, and command buttons to a simple sample app.But nowherein my enterprise edition of VID 6 are they to be found! There areheadaches like this at many key points and it's making my blood boil. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars worst book on the subject-skip it
This is worthless book. I'm astonished that Sams published it! You won't learn anything from this book. I think it is partly Sams Pub fault... they should have assigned a content editor to the author and apparently they did not.
Don't waste your money... Praise the Lord I borrowed this book from the public library!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Valuable Paper
Cadenhead's book is infinitely inferior to most others on the same subject. He has a real knack for making a simple task extrordinarily difficult. If you want to learn how to use FrontPage 2002, you would be better off playing with the program yourself for an afternoon rather than wasting your time reading this book.If you do need assistance with the program, do yourself a favor, find another book that will help you. ...
