Very useful
This small book has lots of useful information.It also has lots of color pictures and charts.

It covers how weather happensand shows you how clouds form and has pictures of the different kinds of clouds.Geographic weather variations are discussed.Weather conditions in snowfields and glaciers, lakes and oceans, and desert environments are explained.

Forecasting changes in weather covers using an altimeter and predicting weather changes by using wind direction.

There is an especially interesting chapter at the end that discusses forecasting from legends and lore, using--I kid you not--coffee, and watching the behavior of bees, songbirds, fog, and blackflies. ... Read more

Great gift!
I bought this for a 12 year old boy who wants to be a meteorologist and who just had surgery and was bedridden for weeks.He absolutely loves it!His mom says he keeps it on his nightstand and reads it constantly.

Excellent guide for a diffcult subject.
This Guide is much needed in the field of meteorology. It is neither too obscure techincally, nor too juvenile for the average reader. Virtually every aspect of the subject is handled well, with excellent illustrations.Having dealt with such presentations during my entire career, I recommend it highly.

I'm a professional pilot who loves the weather aspect of my job. This book is wonderful due to its many illistrations. Plus there are even a few references to pilots and planes and flying which of course helps keep me interested.

Environmental issues
The book Weather: How it works and Why it Matters by Arthur Upgren and Jurgen Stock is an interesting and rather diverse text on weather.It covers not only the basics, like humidity, dew point, wind chill and temperature, but also the physics of weather, the lore of weather, and weather on other planets.It examines ice ages and their causes and looks at the effects of extraterrestrial impacts, like the ancient Chicxulub astroid that destroyed the dinosaurs and the modern day Tunguska comet impact in Siberia in 1908.

Although I'd no doubt that the authors were very competent in science (Arthur Upgren is Professor of Astronomy at Wesleyan University and Senior Research Scientist at Yale University and his coauthor Jurgen Stock is an astronomer on the faculty of Hamburg and Case Western Reserve Universities), I wasn't quite sure that either was necessarily qualified as a meteorologist.Actually I found it interesting that two such well trained astronomers would even be interested in writing a book about weather and climate.It was with the final chapters (15-18) of the book that their purpose in doing so became apparent.

The problem of global warming and world wide environmental destruction is an issue with which many scientists, regardless of their pedigree, have become more and more involved.Well known and influential authors such as E.O. Wilson and Richard Leaky have added their voices to a growing chorus of well trained individuals attempting to call our attention and that of our governments to the dangers of continued abuse of nature and the planet.In this instance, it isn't so much the "how it works" part of the title that is the actual point of the book, but the "why it matters" portion that is overwhelmingly so.

The bibliography is well rounded and well worth spending a little time rounding up the entries.It includes titles that cover, in even greater detail, many of the concepts introduced by the present authors.Included are Aherns' Essentials of Meteorology, Alvarez's T. Rex and the Crater of Doom, Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel,Imbrie and Imbrie's Ice Ages: Solving the Mystery, Leaky and Lewin's The Sixth Extinction:Patterns of Life and the Future of Mankind, Stommel and Stommel's Volcano Weather: The Story of the Year without a Summer, 1816, among others.Some of these I have already read and enjoyed, others I will definitely look to include in my reading list.

Although one might find a better and more detailed discussion of the actual complexities of weather and climate, this book covers a broad spectrum of issues having to do with it and brings to the fore the impact that our individual decisions have on our world.

Descriptive, informative, yet casual
First, I would like to comment on the overall tone of this book that discusses one of those topics that often would invoke some form of repulsion by the average layman - Junger has done a marvelous job at engaging the reader through an otherwise lengthy and descriptive piece of literature.

The author leads the reader through the weather journey from his honest personal experiences to the history of Earth's atmospheric evolution, all but topped with curious facts about other planets and the Universe. I really enjoyed the systematic approach he applies in the discussion of Global Warming, the delicate inter relationship that marries the climate and human activities and preventive measures.

However, one huge drawback of this book that now seems to beg you to buy it is the lack of detailed Geographical analyses of mechanisms of the weather machine and their causes. The author tends to gloss over the details (which may be a good thing for some) but offers many examples to support his statements.

What I find particularly refreshing is the section on weather lore. To cite one example, the old saying that when dew appears rain will not come, actually arises from the lack of cloud cover. Comprehensive and light hearted talk about the weather. Thumbs up. ... Read more

Easy to understand and fascinating
"Eric Sloane's Weather Book" was a very fun, easy-to-understand, and fascinating book about weather. He explained ways that a person can predict the weather by looking at the sky, how to read weather maps--what all the symbols mean--and use weather instruments. He covered information about our atmosphere, air, winds, heat, and clouds, and how it all works together to create weather.

The author has a gift for making difficult ideas very easy to understand. He also included many black and white illustrations that reinforced what was taught in the text and made it clear. The book was packed full of practical information on how to become weather-wise. This book was first written some time ago (in 1949) and was based off of articles that the author wrote for sailors and aviators. Most of the information is still completely relevant, but it does show it's age in a few places.

I'd highly-recommend this well-written and interesting book to anyone who's curious about how weather is created and how to predict it.

An Interesting Book
Very educational as well as a great reminder of my "Mamaw" [great grandmother] who was an excellent weather prognosticator who new almost all of the weather signs.

quite superb
For a sailor interested in weather, there are these days a myriad of marine weather books written with ever increasing sophistication and complication.I've read, even studied, many of them; and most have value.But this is the one that I reread before every season (and this will be my fifty-seventh sailing season). There is a simplicity and clarity to Sloan's explanations which, coupled with his wonderful illustrations, make this book superb and unique.I suppose that technophiles might quibble with the fact that this book does not include a few ideas or concepts that we now know, but which were unknown in 1949 when the book was first published.But that doesn't qualify what I've said about its excellence.Even if your interest involves weather fax, GRIBS, and 500mb charts, there is literally no better book to explain the basics of how weather happens.And, if, like me, you no longer cruise, but just day sail or make the occasional overnighter, this book coupled with last night's TV forecast, a decent barometer, and Alan Watts' INSTANT WEATHER FORECASTING, is pretty much all you need.ERIC SLOAN'S WEATHER BOOK is really in a class by itself.

Weather for Dummies
I didn't realize we had inherited a copy of this book from my father-in-law until I found it rather late in the semester I took Meteorology.I read it cover-to-cover while studying for the final and managed a 'B' which for me on a science topic was AWESOME.Eric Sloane's simplistic explanations and drawings helped this non-science major grasp some of the tougher concepts.

The only time I really NOTICED how old it is was when he mentioned how the earth would appear if one were to take a trip into space in a suit made of air -- we hadn't landed on the moon when this was written.No mention of ozone or the top two levels of the atmosphere either but, hey, who knew they were there in 1949? ... Fantastic book!
This book is absolutely fantastic! Once I start reading it, its hard to put down. When I do put it down, I have the urge to start reading it again a few minutes later...but hate to finish it!!

Original and dramatic, with many illustrations
This original, profusely illustrated book is a must for anyone interested in the Upper Peninsula and its weather. Author Karl Bohnak has been weather forecaster at WLUC TV 6 in Marquette/Neguanee since 1988. His first book combines meterology and history in a fascinating, dramatic way.

Weather has played SUCH an important role in U.P. history. How deep does the snow get, and where do the deer yard up? How long is the growing season, and the shipping season? How much food and fuel is needed for winter survival? Karl draws on treasures like shipwreck stories, hardships experienced by prospectors, landlookers, miners, and the detailed diaries of Father Frederic Baraga, the Snowshoe Priest.

Karl loves snow and has been able to spend his professional career in an ideal spot for snow-lovers. He grew up in Milwaukee, an area of unreliable snow, and studied meterology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Climate impacts history: upper Midwest
Karl Bohnak's "So Cold a Sky" is a well-researched narrative quoting journals and stories from the Fr.
