4-0 out of 5 stars Georgewashington's socks
This book is about some kids that go back in George Washington's time when he fought the Revolutionary war, in particular when he crossed the Delaware River. And how they try to get back to the 20th century. The main characters are Matt, Tony, Q, Hooter and Katie. They go back in time using a magical rowboat. I liked this book little bit. This book had alot of exciting parts and adventure parts too. My favorite part is when they get back in the 20th century.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suitable Introduction to the American Revolutionary War for Youngsters
The value of "George Washington's Socks" is not so much that it gives tons of information about our first president --it doesn't--but that itreally brings home the fact that the American Revolutionary War was real, and that people suffered for what they believed in.

In essence, it's sort of a Time Warp Trio/Magic TreeHouse adventure. There are four boys -- Matthew, Quentin, Hooter and Tony-- and the little sister, Katie, who leads them into trouble. The gang doesn't have a Tree House or Book to whisk them off, but a rowboat.

Talking Points:::
This is one of the books our school has chosen for all 4th Graders to read; and having read it, I can understand why. Elvira Woodruff makes the cold and danger of Washington's crossing palpable. And she doesn't shy from having good people die.

Generally pedestrian writing --from an adult's point of view-- but appropriate for kids.

George Washington is portrayed as a kind, fatherly figure; but the focus is more on common people.

2-0 out of 5 stars An interesting book if you are a pacifist.
This book is a four-star book for those who agree with the following statement from the young hero: "I thought this was supposed to be one of the good wars.(The Revolutionary War)The rebels were supposed to be the good guys, but maybe there's no such thing as just good guys fighting bad guys.It seems like there's good and bad on both sides. And you know, the funny thing is that sometimes they're really fighting for the same things."

If you do not believe in cultural/moral relativism, or if you believe that the Revolutionary War was worth fighting, than this book has several flaws and rates only 2 stars. One, is that George Washington appears only briefly in the beginning and at the end, and is depicted as a kindly, rather distracted older uncle. Nothing new here, although George Washington was a complex, heroic figure who certainly merits an entire book for younger children. In this book his rather flat characterization pales in comparison to the three young soldiers who are killed. The second problem is the insistence on the part of the author that war is not justified and that recruits are duped into joining and then die tragic, unnecessary deaths. The deaths of Israel, Gustaf and Adam are depicted with extreme realism and are moving, yet very disturbing. This is probably what the author intended, and mirror some present day beliefs. If you want your child to believe that war is never justified, that soldiers are either callous thugs (the rebel soldiers) or innocent victims led to the slaughter (Israel), than this is a four-star book.

As for me, I will continue in my search for a book for 5th/6th graders on George Washington; one that depicts that great man in a more interesting and complex manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!!
I just finished George Washington's Socks ..... And I loved it! It's about a boy named Matt, his sister Katie and his 3 friends Hooter, Q, and Tony.Matt wants an adventure, but when something happens, somehow they end up in the eighteenth century! They are on a boat that they found and when Katie gets lost, Matt is about to cry, but then someone saves her. Who could it be? Was it Matt? You have to read the book in order to find out. Have you ever heard of the name Gustav? Well Matt, Tony, Q, Hooter and Katie have. He was nice, but they thought that he was the rebel. But then something horrible happens.... Gustav died. Why such a good guy die? Then Matt remembers something. When they were all going to the eighteenth century, Katie was thinking about the revolutionary war, and when they were in the boat again going back home, Katie was thinking about going home. They all end up home right when Katie said that. That's really weird. Is the boat magic? Read the book in order to find out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best shared, but independent readers will enjoy.
Should be on every 4-6 teacher's bookshelf.A time-travel adventure gimmick will get the kids to read it, and they'll relatively painlessly learn about some of the horrors of war, including cowardice, that all too many texts gloss over. And yet it's not "politically correct" - Washington is made slightly more human but still heroic, for example.Any kid who does read it will probably ace the test on the American Revolution....As for the review "Caution Parents" - if you feel that you must keep your children in a bubble, then I'm sure you can talk to them about how foolish you believe the characters to be.Use the book to teach not only the Am. Rev., but also the need to make careful choices. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
The book is good as a quick review. Not in depth, but nobody can carry a Williams' Textbook of Endocrinology around the hospital.

4-0 out of 5 stars good fast reading
This book is great for med students. Resident's should really have more detail than what is in this book. But good and concise. Not meant for fellows.

4-0 out of 5 stars Endocrinology Consult for a good price
I bought this book for an Endocrinology rotation during my 2nd year in residency, including Consult Service and Outpatient Clinic. This book includes most of the basic knowledge that i needed to complete my service month, without leaving many topics that i needed uncovered. I found though, that it lacks some important topics, like uncontrolled DM due to medication or infection, Steroids tapering, role of diuretics in hypercalcemia, medications induced osteoporosis. For these cases I had to refer to uptodate for more details. Apart from these it was very good in explaining the diagnostic studies for the different organ functions and diseases. Eg. it helped me finally understand when NOT to order thyroid function tests! Overall i can certainly state that I do not know any manual-sized book, that would include the missing topics in its contents. The rest of this book is very nice so I am giving a 4/5 for being the best book in its category, but not being perfect. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall decent review
Have skimmed over this guide and it seems to have most of the essentials needed for the rotating resident/med student on a GI service. The approach to specific symptoms (part I) was very well done and has a lot of helpful information. The approach to specific diseases section (part II) was decent but I must say the section on small bowel disorders was extremely sparse and needs to be expanded. For example the author cites many things on the differential dx for small bowel malabsorbtion, but only celiac disease and short bowel syndrome are explained and these only in minimal depth. Would hope 2nd edition will add to this section. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't look like an idiot.
As an experienced clinician I was appalled to see a Death Note written by a medical student using the guide in this book.He titled it "Celestial Dischage"-- just as it is noted in the book. It was his first time, and he thought that was acceptable to put in a patient's chart.

If you expect to use a reference when you are either inexperienced, 3/4 brain dead after call, or both, don't risk your professional reputation on "cute."

4-0 out of 5 stars practical pocket book for interns
This book is all about overnight call situations that interns face. I'm an intern this year and I keep it in my pocket along with 2 other books: Sanford Guide and Pocket Medicine by Sabatine. There are plenty of books out there if you want to learn about disease processes and the physiology behind it all, but this is the only one I've found that has *practical* information. For example, tables of common prn meds, and how to approach cross cover issues. Great death note sample also.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but overpriced
I thought that the book is very helpful on the wards and for my ER rotation. The book is concise and a quick read so it is best to read the book before the rotation starts.I read it so quickly that I wonder why the price is so steep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book is very helpful for starting intern year and gives you really good advice for things to do on call.It also has good examples for admit notes, discharge summaries, common calls and common drugs.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book
Yeah I just wanned to say that this book is dope.I mean for real, I had hella questions about all this medical stuff and this book was straight up dealing!Damn, so I'm an intern and when I be up at like 4:30 in the AM I be tired as HELL!! This book easy to use and helps me out when I'm all foggy minded.Damn, homie, 80 hours like what? But anyway, this thing has got my IV fluids and them dang arterial blood gases locked down from the top down!

4-0 out of 5 stars Karting -racing fast little cars
In the middle of the summer Ingles made the first little car. It had a lawn mower engine, the wheels were a foot and a half round. The frame was three feet long, and it had a leather seat. Basically it was made of metal. Then his cousin wanted a little car too. So then people started buiding their own little cars. Next came racing. There were three kinds of racing. First came sprint racing.

They would race on a one mile track. Second came Super Kart racing. They would go on a three to four mile track with twist and turns. Third came Ice Racing, the cars would have nails stiking out of the tires so when they raced around the track it would give them grip. Super kart racing is different because 1 to 20 cars could race. The other races only go up to 1 to 10 cars in the race. I like this book because it told me a lot about cars. ... Read more

Product Description
Malik Goes to School: Examining the Language Skills of African American Students From Pre-School-5th Grade synthesizes a decade of research by the authors, Holly Craig and Julie Washington, on the oral language and literacy skills of African American children from preschool to fifth grade. Their research has characterized significant influences on the child's use of AAE and the relationship between AAE and aspects of literacy acquisition. The research has also led to the characterization of other nondialectal aspects of language development. The outcome has been a culture-fair, child-centered language evaluation protocol.

This very readable volume will be important to students, clinicians, and teachers learning about and working with, African American children. The book has direct relevance to academic planning, clinical decision-making, curriculum development, and educational policymaking. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1907, William Winlock Miller High School, known as Olympia High School, first opened its doors to the sons and daughters of the South Puget Sound area's pioneer families. Three campuses and a century later, the school remains a vibrant part of the community and a herald of academic and athletic excellence across the state. A walk through time, this volume illustrates the pictorial history of the buildings and campuses, well-known personalities, student life, and traditions that have left an indelible mark on the history of the region. This book touches upon the many institutions that have endured and pays homage to the customs that have been lost or evolved over the decades. From the original campus adjacent to the current state capitol, to the 43 years on Capitol Way, to the dairy farm evolving into a 15-acre complex, now home to William Winlock Miller High School, this work is the most comprehensive study of the history of Olympia High School to date. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
One of the must-haves for any internal medicine resident.Very useful during my intern year with explanations of basic management of pain, nutrition, admission orders, etc. Then goes into details on management of almost all the medical conditions you will encounter.Too big to fit into a coat pocket, but that's what pocket medicine is for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I love it.The Washington manual of medical therapeutics is an excellent book for residency training and for medical students. It offers more up to date management of medical conditions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy book
This is a very handy book to have available at this hospital- it has succinct readings on various diseases and problems encountered in internal medicine with the suggested work-ups and treatments. It is especially helpful to the new intern. This book is probably too big to fit in the white coat pocket without undue stress on the neck or coat. The index is not very helpful. For example: Crohn's disease is not indexed, but inflammatory bowel disease is.Pulmonary embolus is not indexed, but can be found by reading the related chapter. These are annoying problems, but the content is there.
