Local Geography Simply put Jackson Hole is the valley, Jackson the town that rests between the mountains and buttes at the southern end of that valley. "Hole" is a term early mountain men used for any wide, high mountain valley. Travelers are often surprised by the size and flat terrain of Jackson Hole because the four highways that approach the valley traverse mountain passes or push through steep-sided canyons. The valley’s pastoral tranquility is deceptive, however, because the growing season is short, and the soils are thin, rocky and generally poor. Area Ranges, Canyons and Passes Jackson Hole is surrounded by several Ranges. The Teton Range to the west, Snake River range to the south west and south. Gros Ventres (pronounced "Grow Vawnts") to the east and the North Winds and Yellowstone to the north. Teton Mountain Range When people hear about Jackson Hole, the range that first comes to mind is the Tetons. One of America's youngest ranges, the Tetons boast a dramatic collection of steep and jagged peaks. With no foot hills on the eastern side of the range the tallest of the peaks twice as breath taking because they look and feel overwhelmingly close. Snake River Canyon Dividing the Snake River Range and the Teton Mountain Rages, Teton Pass is the main highway into Teton Valley, Idaho, to the communities of Driggs and Victor, and Grand Targhee ski resort. Buffalo Evansville Lusk Sheridan ... Rock Springs WYOMING - Geography One of the Rocky Mt. states of the W United States. It is bordered by South Dakota and Nebraska (E), Colorado and Utah (S), Idaho (W), and Montana (N). In SE Wyoming the higher tablelands are interrupted by the Laramie and Medicine Bow ranges. Across this region travelers to the Pacific coast made their way when wars with the Native Americans in the 1860s endangered treks on the regular Oregon Trail. The railroad followed paths of these wagon trains when the Union Pacific laid its tracks along this more southerly course. In SW Wyoming is the natural gateway through the Rockies: the broad, grassy South Pass. Immediately north of the pass is the Wind River Range, reaching the highest altitude in the state at Gannett Peak (13,785 ft/4,202 m). Still farther north rise the Gros Ventre and Absaroka ranges, and to the west, near the Idaho line, the glorious Tetons loom above a lake and valley country of incomparable beauty. From the mountain heights snows melt to feed a number of rivers. The Snake begins its long, winding journey into Idaho and on to the Columbia; the Yellowstone travels north and east into the Missouri; and the Green River flows south to join the Colorado. This wealth of surface water offsets the scant rainfall, and river water is impounded for irrigation, flood control, and in some cases hydroelectric power.
