Similarly, I can use a music composition to show how one can hear beyond simply what it is expressing, but more deeply understand how it was constructed to express it. The understanding of that "construction," whether of written text or music composition is essential for students to begin forming their own voices as composers or authors. Theoretical Basis for my Work Patricia Campbell in her "Lessons from the World," discusses imitation and its use in music education in the various cultures throughout the world. It is implausible that a beginning piano student could learn to play a complicated piece of repertory simple by witnessing a teacher play, say, a Chopin Mazurka. There would need to be adequate preparation at a much more rudimentary level. A group of pre-school children, on the other hand, are easily able to listen to and imitate their teacher who sings them a simple, diatonic melody with predictable rhythmic and melodic patterns. Activities we, as teachers, expect out students to imitate must be observable. This is particularly important as we use writing in the music classroom. It is essential that we write for our students in ways they can observe and imitate. Practical Applications for the Music Classroom I have included here a lesson plan for a 3 rd to 6 th I. Introduce the Work of the Day.

Charles Sheffield, in Borderlands of Science , thinks of science as a "sprawling continent, a body of learning and theories." He then goes on to define science fiction as "stories set on the shore of that huge scientific land mass." Stanley Schmidt says, "The very essence of science fiction is that it is free to question just about anything and look at alternate answers." Even though it is not easy to come up with a definition of science fiction, I have found that my seventh and eighth grade students enjoy reading science fiction stories and watching science fiction movies. I want to capitalize on that interest. I also think it is important for students to become more interested in science. Articles about space probes and space shuttles appear daily in newspapers and magazines. Lasers are used in surgery; scientific discoveries are happening all of the time. Science is all around us. Reading science fiction is a way to to get students more interested in science. Reading about black holes, space travel, time travel, and gravity can make science come alive for students.

We'd give students dictionaries and grammar books. We'd lecture them on the abstract structure of stories. We'd give them dreadful stuff to read - only things written by the most junior writers, like advanced underclassmen or young grad students (some of whom can indeed write well, but most of whom are dreadful). We'd keep the great literature secret. Shakespeare would be locked up in a corporate vault somewhere. Dickens would be classified Secret by the government.     Extractions: in non-fiction writing exercise Recently at the beginning of a writing project, when Lakeridge teacher Barbara Tivnan reminded her first grade class that she expected their "perfect five-star work," she might have thought to herself, "no pun intended," because the project they were embarking upon did involve the Stars and Stripes. Tivnan's class of 6-7 year-olds were preparing for their very first non-fiction writing project of the year entitled, 'The American flag-What it means to me.' This writing activity has it's roots in the Lakeridge Site Plan of teaching respect for self, others, and country. Tivnan developed the project last year because, as she explains, "I like combining facts with emotions. In this exercise, my students are required to think about what they learned about the American flag, the meaning behind the flag, and to put it all together." Last year, the project provided an unexpected benefit. It became a way for children to express their feelings about the terrorist attacks of September 11th. "Though I didn't mention September 11th formally in my classroom," Tivnan confides, "their parents were talking about it at home and it was still foremost in students' minds. Some of their responses were quite eloquent."
