Extractions: The assignment of preparing a research paper for a college-level history course is an important one which should not be neglected. In no other endeavor are so many history-related skills required of students. Just think of the steps required: First, students must find a historical problem worth addressing. This is done most often by reading and comparing secondary history sources, such as monographs and journal articles. Simply finding relevant secondary materials requires its own particular set of skills in using the library: searching catalogs, accessing on-line databases, using interlibrary loan, and even knowing how to pose questions to reference librarians. Reading these sources, determining their arguments, and putting them in conversation with each other constitute another broad set of skills which are enormously difficult to master. Second, having developed a historical problem, students must find a set of primary historical sources which can actually address the question they have formulated. Once again, this is no easy task. It requires another array of skills in using the library. Students must know how to message the on-line library catalog, and perhaps even (gasp!) use the card catalog. They must be willing to explore the stacks, learn to use special collections, travel off-campus to new libraries, or interview informants. This kind of primary source research demands a diligence and persistence rare in these days of easy Internet access.

The second paragraph presents part one of my thesis: " this account offers an overly simple picture of rhetorical education for the years between 1600 and the English Civil War and a rather misleading paradigm for understanding the continuation of rhetorical instruction for the remainder of the century after the War". I then provide a preview of the review of literature. Previous Studies As mentioned above, much of the previous research in both histories of rhetoric and histories of law accounts for the years 1550 to 1640 but has little or nothing to say about the period after the Civil War. The unquestioned standard view developed in this research is that the sources of rhetoric available for the renaissance English common lawyer for the years between 1550 and 1640 are the Inns of Court, the universities, and rhetoric books. For the unexplored period after 1640, infrequent investigations rely on extensions of earlier conclusions.

The project was especially concerned with how children use writing to acquire historical knowledge, organize historical information, and develop historical thinking. The project studied a cross-sectional sample of diverse students, including recent immigrants from Central America and Asia, in the third to fifth grades. Extractions: As Latin Americans approach the end of the century, democracy has finally won the battle with authoritarian government. While Mexico has had the greatest success with sustaining a democracy, its foundation dating from the 1930s, Venezuela, too, since 1958, has demonstrated its capacity to support the give and take of a competitive system. Even Argentina and Chile, after suffering through the violence and repression of military dictatorship, have returned to the democratic fold. We will examine the historical foundation of Hispanic democracy in primarily Chile, Mexico, and Venezuela, and we examine the posture of the United States vis-a-vis these countries. If you have never written a research paper before, you need to understandÂ the difference betweenÂ primary sources and secondary sources. Primary sources are sources created during an event or about an event by the people who experienced it . Primary sources can be letters, contemporary newspaper accounts, or photographs. They can also be oral histories, memoirs, or autobiographies, later recollections of the time by someone who was there. Secondary sources are books or articles written about an event or aspects of a pastÂ event, using primary sources .
