When Harry Kelley was forced to retire from truck driving two years ago due to back injuries, he knew he had to find something to busy himself. Thats when he signed on as a VFW volunteer with the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS). After I retired, I was just sitting around looking at four walls, the Vietnam veteran and member of Post 534 in Joplin, Mo., said. Thats why I decided to do something for someone else. Once or twice a week, Kelley drives veterans four hours to Kansas Citys VA Medical Center for treatment. And with a career record of 2.5 million miles accident-free, Kelley is the kind of guy you want driving you hundreds of miles in one day for an appointment. On average, Kelley has three passengers per trip. While they are taking care of business at the hospital, he wanders around the waiting room visiting with other veterans. My father was a POW in WWII, so I like to visit with other WWII vets, said Kelley, who served off the Vietnam coast on the USS Coral Sea.

That in itself is a sign of writing centers having come of age, since some of our young uns are apparently curious about our past. Interestingly enough, that past, those dim, dark beginnings in the primordial ooze, are really relatively recent; for if we've matured, it's been a rapid maturation process. In the "Editor's Notes" to a new book of essays on writing centers, Thorn Hawkins and Phyllis Brooks conclude that it is doubtful that even a dozen writing centers existed at the beginning of the 1970's. Tapping several sources, they estimate that as we entered the 1980's, the number of writing centers nationwide was rapidly approaching 1000. To describe that rapid growth process, I need to delve into some personal history because my case is typical of many. In the mid '7Os, having decided that I was ready to look for a job, I finally found out what everyone else already knew, that there was little or no market for people who had degrees in literary studies. However, like other faculty wives and unemployed Ph.D's across the country, I began to teach composition as a part-time lecturer and quickly experienced the frustration of being unable to accomplish much of anything with a large group. There were murmurings of starting up a writing lab at Purdue which, like other post-secondary institutions around the country, was beginning to find that the literary crisis was not a media invention or a fiction Newsweek made up for a juicy cover story. Something was needed to cure the problem, and a "lab" sounded like a distinct possibility, though no oneat least at Purdueknew exactly what a lab might be.

"This is very distressing to them, as these clinics are often the only providers of primary and urgent care for the community." Kennedy pointed out that the striking employees are mainly minority women who are facing the strain of additional patient loads due to the success of the RIte Care program, as well as additional former Harvard Pilgrim Health Center subscribers, while working for wages ranging from $8 to $12 an hour.
