(WOMENSENEWS)The military planes buzzing over her Columbus, Miss., home as she was growing up provided all the inspiration Lisa Gerlt needed to focus her career plan. She was going to be a fighter pilot. That was 16 years ago, before women were allowed to become aviators in the armed services. As soon as she was old enough, Gerlt enlisted anyway, and now the 34-year-old master sergeant says the U.S. Air Force treats women just fine. She never did get back to that aviator training she had her eye on early in her career, even after the Department of Defense decreed in 1994 that women could become fighter pilots. "I knew before I graduated from high school that that was what I wanted to do. I never had any other desire," Gerlt said. "I was very naive. It could have been possible, I guess, if I had driven myself more. Lots of women do it and I admire them, but once I got in, I just wanted to do what they felt I was best for." Today the more than 200,000 women in the military make up 15 percent of all service people, and they are beginning to creep into the upper ranks, with more than a dozen captaining naval ships and scores flying bombers.

The dominant feature of the memorial is a 225-foot semicircular glass belvedere that holds large glass tablets inscribed with quotes by and about the women who have served in the military. The 37,000 square-foot education center is carved into the hillside of Arlington National Cemetery and concealed behind the unfinished, 30-foot-high, neoclassical hemicycle designed in 1927 by McKim Mead and White to be the ceremonial gateway to the cemetery.

When the Equal Pay Act was signed by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, women earned an average of 61 cents for every dollar earned by men. Lower pay for women requires them to spend longer time away from their families to earn the same as a male coworker, and lower pay means lower pensions when women retire. All of this translates into discrimination and disadvantage for women. That is the reason I strongly support the Paycheck Fairness Act." The Paycheck Fairness Act would strengthen the Equal Pay Act to provide more effective remedies to women who are not being paid equal wages for doing equal work, and it would place gender on the same legal footing as race or ethnicity in dealing with wage discrimination. The legislation would help by prohibiting employers from penalizing workers for sharing salary information with coworkers. The legislation would provide for compensatory and punitive damages for gender discrimination in wages.

"Is there any regulation which specifies that a Navy yeoman be a man?" Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels asked in 1917. Today's military, with more than 200,000 women currently on active duty, bears little resemblance to that of 1951.
