    Undoubtedly the best book on welsh history in recent years is that of Dr. JohnDavies, Hanes Cymru , or, in its English translation, A History of Wales .

Undoubtedly the best book on Welsh history in recent years is that of Dr. John Davies, "Hanes Cymru", or, in its English translation, "A History of Wales". It covers the entire span of Welsh history from pre-history and the Red Lady of Paviland to modern times and the miners' strike of 1984. It's a book well worth reading or even just dipping into for information about any particular period. As I can't hope to emulate John Davies's scholarship I've just put together a few significant dates in Welsh history which you may not be aware of. It is believed that Dewi Sant . (St David), our patron saint lived during this period. There are many churches dedicated to him throughout Wales, including the cathedral at St David's ( Tyddewi ). In the Middle Ages, 3 pilgrimages to St. David's was equivalent to one to Rome. His day is celebrated on 1st March and is known as Dydd Gwyl Ddewi During this period Hywel Dda (Hywel the Good) formulated the laws which were used throughout Wales until Edward I enforced the use of English law. The laws of Hywel Dda were more enlightened than some of the English laws which replaced them Prince Madog is alleged to have sailed the Atlantic and discovered America and left descendants among the Indian tribes there Prince Llywelyn ( Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf ), the last of the Princes of Wales was killed in battle at Cilmeri. His baby daughter Gwenllian was taken by Edward I's forces and kept in a convent in Lincolnshire for the remainder of her life (50+ years!) to prevent her being a focus of rebellion by the Welsh against their English conquerors

The Red Dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) The red dragon has long been associated with the country of Wales. It is the mark of bravery and victory, and has been a symbol for the Welsh people since the Middle Ages. The dragon graces shields and standards and is part of many families crest or coat of arms. When King Henry VII was crowed as the King of England in 1485, it is said that he ordered the Red Dragon become part of the official flag of the principality of Wales. And the Welsh are fiercely proud of their Dragon. ‘Y Ddraig Goch a ddyry Gychwyn’ – the Red Dragon will show the way. However, some Englishman, who obviously has to much time on his hands, has deemed "The Dragon" to aggressive a symbol to display on a flag ~rolling eyes~ and there was talk of forcing us to change to a more serene symbol. Other Welsh symbols, and our Patron Saint - Dewi Sant St David (Dewi Sant) is the Patron saint of Wales and her people. He died on March I. This is St. David’s day in Wales and is celebrated every year. It is celebrated every year as the national day of thanksgiving, and is traditionally signified by women wearing a daffodil and the men wearing a leek, both which are Welsh National symbols.

    Extractions: Neolithic (4500-2100 BC) Long barrows are from this period, or more normally just the remains of the rock slab tomb that underlay such mounds. These are generally called dolmens, but in Wales are called cromlechs. Bronze Age (2100- about 700 BC) Large number of standing stones, although no generally accepted evidence that these do come from the Bronze Age. The word for these stones menhir comes from the Welsh maen hir , long stone. Other remains are round barrows. Iron Age The arrival of the Celts, sometime between 760-700 BC. from Central Europe. Many hill forts were built. Romans The Romans arrived in Britain in 43 AD. When they arrived, they recorded four tribes in Wales - the Ordovices and Deceangli in the North, the Demetae and Silures in the South. They were resisted by the Silures of South Wales and the Ordovicians of North Wales, under Caractacus. The names of these tribes live on in the names of early geological ages. However the hill forts were no match for the Romans. The Romans destroyed the Druids in the base in Anglesey. Two legionary forts were built at Caerleon and Deva (Chester), the latter being in England (just).

There were people here before they came of course! 43 A.D. Troops of Roman Emperor Claudius invade Britain. Irish incomers make permanent settlements in Southwest Wales. Four hundred years of Roman administration ends in Britain as the Romans leave. Saint Patrick, from Wales, brings Christianity to Ireland. after 450 Anglo-Saxon immigrants start arriving. Waves of Germanic tribes come to Britain. The Saxons are defeated at Mount Badon. One of King Arthur's twelve battles. The rule of King Arthur lasts for 45 plus years. This is also the period of the Saints. Celtic saints set up sites throughout Wales and Europe teaching Christianity. In the east of Britain, the Saxons remain pagan. Saint David dies on March 1st. Offa of Mercia, a powerful Saxon king, builds Offa's Dyke, marking Wales's eastern boundary. The Dyke is not a fortified one, but a permanent boundary line. The most notable Welsh figure before the arrival of the Normans is slain. Rhodri Mawr was the first Welsh ruler to unite the Welsh tribes and kingdoms under one rule.
