AIR SPORTS INTERNATIONAL ranging from archery to waterskiing. It helps put things in perspective. The greatdivide here is between the sports that are in the olympic Games and those http://airsports.fai.org/may2000/may2000sge.html
Extractions: One of the advantages of having one's offices in Lausanne, the capital of world sport, is that it gives many opportunities to compare air sports with ground-bound sporting activities, ranging from archery to water-skiing. It helps put things in perspective. The great divide here is between the sports that are in the Olympic Games and those that are not. Last week, I attended a joint meeting between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (a body which is also moving its office to Lausanne, from Rome). At this meeting, IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch announced that a total sum of 172 million US Dollars would be distributed amongst the International Federations participating in the Sydney Olympics. (This sum represents one third of the proceeds from the sale of TV rights, sponsorship and marketing. The other two-thirds are split equally between the IOC and Olympic Solidarity - aid to sports development in the Third World.) On average, each federation will bank 5.7 million US Dollars, enough to run the FAI at present budget levels for almost 7 years. This means that the Olympic federations have no need to charge their national members large annual subscriptions. In most cases they levy only token amounts. The FAI, on the other hand, not being able to participate in this bonanza, continues to rely very heavily (for over 85% of its income) on Members' subscriptions.

Many raced around, some threw things and that was about it. It wasn't about equipment-intensive battles. It was about basic physical sports. I think NASCAR has about as much chance at getting into the Olympics as waterskiing does."

Extractions: Rollerskating, ballroom dancing and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games. You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding to future Olympic competitions. Gimme a break. There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics. They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events? These are not sporting events, they are methods of murder. The same goes for synchronized swimming. If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport (and it is possible to be bored to death by synchronized swimming!) What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? I guess that way Anna Kournikova could finally say she's a winning athlete and not just some hot babe with a nice racket. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's actually defined as a circus act or a freak exhibit) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies or "things I do when I'm really bored," (synchronized swimming not being one of them!)

Extractions: Challenge Magazine - Spring 2002 On the eastern end of the U.S., retired Pennsylvania school teacher Sandy Foltz, a below knee amputee ran a segment in Erie on New Year's Day. Her positive response to amputation and her example to students as an upbeat role model earned her nomination to the Olympic Committee. Another Pennsylvania Olympic torch bearer was Denny Chipollini who became an amputee after an auto accident in 1990. He has since become a marathon runner and motivational speaker in the Philadelphia area, founding a nonprofit organization known as Generation Hope which aids children with disabilities. After his Pennsylvania run, the athlete was also selected to carry the Paralympic torch in Utah. In Pueblo, Colorado, brothers Bob and Rick Meserve each did a segment of the Fort Collins stretch on January 30. Rick nominated his brother who became a paraplegic in 1983 following a skiing accident. Bob spent five years on the U.S. Disabled Ski Team, for which he is still an adviser, and is currently vice president of the DS/USA Board of Directors. Also torch bearers in the Colorado segment of the run were siblings Spencer and Cody Wilcock of Lakewood who carried the beacon in downtown Englewood on Jan. 31. The children of Scott and Mona Wilcock, Cody had nominated her 13-year-old brother in recognition of the progress he has made since receiving massive head injuries in an auto/bike accident in 1995. As part of his rehabilitation, Spencer has participated at Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, enjoying skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, and running hurdles. According to the family, the Olympic Committee was so impressed with Cody's nomination letter that she was also asked to be a torch bearer.
