Wakeboard Donation Campaign At the recent All China Sports Meeting ski tournament we have witnessed the great potential shown by the Chinese younsters in wakeboarding. However, the lack of proper equipment and instruction is a limiting factor to the growth of the sport. After the tournament, Jon Cannon and Trish Blomfield had graciously donated their board and bindings to the Chinese team. I see this as a good initiative in showing our support. To show our further support in helping China to develop wakeboarding, we are calling for the support from wakeboard suppliers and riders to start a wakeboard equipment donation campaign. The goal is to get at least 10 boards and bindings of various sizes, ropes and handles for distribution to the various provincial teams through the Chinese Water Ski Association. These equipment could be used or old models of relatively good conditions. If you have friends who have old boards/bindings that are not being used/sold anymore please ask them to consider donating them to China. This will help the sport and the industry in the long run if wakeboarding becomes a popular sport in China.

One way they looked to do this was through establishing successful sports to assist in funding to win medals and gain success. Tournament and Disabled Water Skiing had an excellent track record and they chose to back these disciplines. Wakeboarding, Cable Skiing, Barefoot and Racing were also put forward but either these disciplines did not have a big enough following on the World Stage (i.e. not enough countries competing at a World Championships) or their organisation was not as advanced internationally. The funding of elite sport is only a small part of the Lottery funding and there is even more money being aimed at facilities and community activities through a number of schemes. Though not one of the identified key sports (you can name them now - football, cricket etc.), British Water Ski is preparing to get access to this. Experience of the Lottery shows that the first through the door have a better chance of getting funds and British Water Ski has been on the ball and now has all its World Class programmes in place assisting promising skiers from the age of 12 upwards.

Wrestling and boxing, two male-only sports already in the summer games, are pushing to include women's events. Earlier this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee rejected chess as a sport, delivering a blow to support for drug testing in the United States. Now the International Olympic Committee has likewise refused to accept chess and other "mind sports" as part of the Olympics. The IOC is reducing rather than increasing the number of Olympic sports, and even popular sports of a physical nature such as bowling, racquetball, water skiing and squash have now been rejected. It should now be clear to even the drug testing diehards that the chances for chess to become part of the Olympics any time in the foreseeable future are nil. It is time to stop the debate and give up on FIDE's ridiculous idea that mandating drug testing now in various tournaments will lead to eventual recognition of chess as an Olympic sport. Congratulations to Executive Director Frank Niro for being the first USCF representative to openly challenge FIDE's ridiculous drug testing policy. Hopefully our Executive Board and FIDE representatives will follow Niro's lead. It is long overdue for USCF to stand up for what is right at FIDE meetings, and I believe that the result is likely to be the end of the idea that drug testing is needed in chess.
