Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia How tough is the U.S. women's water polo team? They're this tough: Center-forward Heather Moody took a blow to the face that bloodied her nose and knocked her loopy late in the semifinal match against the Netherlands on Friday. "But all she kept saying while the trainers were trying to fix her up was, 'What's the score? Are we still ahead?'" said coach Guy Baker. And they're this tough: Center-forward Maureen O'Toole, the 39-year-old mother who came out of retirement to play in these Games because they marked the first time women's water polo has been an Olympic sport, described one of her goals thusly: "Well, the defender tried to grab my face and missed, and that left me a pretty good shooting opportunity."

Capture the Olympic Spirit Terry Schroeder Terry Schroeder is the most recognized water polo player in the United States, and one of the world's premier players in the sport. Terry has been on the U.S. Olympic water polo team four times, and was selected by his fellow Olympians to carry the American flag at the 1988 Olympic Games. Terry gained his fame by playing as the "hole" man, a position just two meters from the opponent's goal, similar to the role of the center on a basketball team. This tough position requires a player who is equally tough, extremely determined, and very focused, as Terry understands better than anyone else does. "Someone once said that the ideal two-meter man has to be able to get hit on the head with a two-by-four and not show emotion. There are no limits on the number of fouls in a water polo match. The "hole" man has been known to be fouled more than 100 times in a game. Imagine being hacked by Shaquille O'Neal 100 times in a game. In spite of the fouls, I have to stay focused on the game and never show a negative reaction."

Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search Table of Contents As swimming became a popular recreation in England during the 1860s and 1870s, several water sports developed, roughly patterned after land sports. Among them were water football (or soccer), water rugby, water handball, and water polo, in which players rode on floating barrels, painted to look like horses, and struck the ball with a stick. Water rugby became the most popular of these sports, but somehow the water polo name became attached to it, and it's been attached ever since. As played in England, the object of the game was for a player to touch the ball, with both hands, at the goal end of the pool. The goaltender stood on the pool deck, ready to dive on any opponent who was about to score. Water polo quickly became a very rough sport, filled with underwater fights away from the ball, and it wasn't unusual for players to pass out for lack of air. In 1877, the sport was tamed in Scotland by the addition of goalposts. The Scots also replaced the original small, hard rubber ball with a soccer ball and adopted rules that prohibited taking the ball under the surface or "tackling" a player unless he had the ball.

Extractions: He never lost his temper in play. There was not time for that. As the hole man, he had to wrestle the heavyweights, take blows and keep focused on the game. That was his strength to take a beating and hold his own. He was fouled up to 75 times in a game. He had a total of 100 stitches in his face. But he never relented, leading his team to great international achievements. During his career, Schroeder led the National Team to five FINA World Cups winning gold and silver medals, and four Pan American Games winning three golds and a silver medal. On the club level, he played for Industry Hills, Malibu, New York Athletic Club and Harvard, competing seven times on National Championship teams. He was voted National MVP six times and was an All-American fourteen times. He was twice named International Player of the Year and carried the U.S. flag at the 1988 Olympic Closing Ceremony. In 1984, he modeled for sculptor, Robert Graham as the bronze male torso sculpted for the Olympic Gateway at the entrance to the Los Angeles Coliseum at the Olympic Games. Extractions: Water polo is a fast moving, action packed sport. It combines a number of aspects of other sports, even though it is one of the oldest Olympic sports. You will notice similarities with soccer, basketball, ice hockey and lacrosse. The field has markings on the sides of the pool. The cones assist in viewing the goal line (white tape), 2 meter line (red tape) and 4 meter line (yellow tape). An offensive player inside the 2 meter line without the ball or ahead of the ball line is offside. Major fouls inside the 4 meter line may result in an ejection or penalty shot. Some of the common ordinary fouls which are penalized with a free throw (you cannot score from a free throw) are: field player using two hands on the ball; pulling the ball under when attacked; using the bottom to influence play (goalie excepted), fouling an opponent with or without the ball. The numerous whistles sometimes confuse the spectator. It is best to watch the sport while understanding a few basic concepts around which the offense and defense is set. Let the officials worry about the technicalities and you enjoy the action.
